[edit] BACKGROUND

Born on the Lunar Colony of Earth’s Moon to Captain Damien Hawkins and Ens. Jessica Ordonis Hawkins, Ander grew up with ambitions of commanding his very own Star ship. However, due to orders from Starfleet, his father, Damien, had to leave causing a rather rough divorce to ensue. Ander blamed himself, and shied away from his aspirations of Starfleet soon after. His older sister, Cassaundra however, encouraged him to explore his interests in exploration and intrigue. When he was 8 years old, his mother noticed his love of exploration. She then decided to spend time with him by taking several tours of the Western Hemisphere of the Moon. Ander almost felt as though he was mapping the moon for himself. This activity he and his mother shared strengthened their bond together.

When Ander was 10 years of age his sister left for Starfleet Academy majoring in Science/Astronomy. He found solace in reading his mothers collection of poetry, and practiced self defence courses in his elementary school’s holo-suite. Most of his self-teaching adventures led him into ancient jungles, or 20th century battlegrounds. He was often praise by him teachers, who noticed a sense of honor and justice in his work. While these holo-novels primary violent in nature; Ander prided himself on finding non-violent ways of conquering his opponents; either through subterfuge, guile, or negotiation. This would come in very handy when he was 14.

Like most teenagers of his time, Ander liked to take risks of life and limb. Most of these escapades were always in the safety of the holo-chamber. However, that safety net would not always be there to save him. On August 14th 2374, while Ander was gallivanting around in a James Bond simulation, there was a fierce power surge throughout the colony. This surge disabled most systems in the colony; however, for the most part the holo-deck was secure. Having no idea that the majority of the colony was disabled, Ander continued his session. If it was not for a lucky strike of fate, Ander most likely would not have survived what he thought was any other playing session. While running through a jungle scene in the holo-program, Ander fell into a trap laid by the villain. He would find the pit with spears was no cakewalk, as the surge had disabled the safety protocols. Ander's right leg was struck by one of the weapons, and for several hours he was unable to get out of the pit. When the power was restored to the colony, his Mother found Ander. She quickly rushed him to the Medical Facility.

Medical advancements such as they were, easily rescued the young boy from the clutches of infection. However, the wound caused by the holographic spear tip so long, that full restoration of his motor skills in the leg were close to impossible. Even with physical therapy, Ander knew he would never walk normally again.

While his ordeal left his crippled and deathly afraid of sharp objects, it also renewed his conviction to join Starfleet. He promised himself that he would not be made a cripple in his heart, even if he could do nothing for his body. So in 2378, Ander applied for Starfleet as a Security/Tactical Officer. Ander also had expressed interest in applying to the Intel study program once he graduated.

Ander's interest to one day be admitted into the Intel program, gained the attention of the Chief of Security in Starfleet Academy. Ander was given the small assignment of monitoring a Klingon Envoy that was visiting the Academy before inducting its new set of Cadets. These three were known for their violent outbursts and disdain for the Federation. One of the men was actually in a Family Line of Klingons that had attempted to sever ties between the Empire and Federation years before. The Chief felt uneasy about their presence, and wanted someone to keep a watchful eye on them,

Ander was chosen not only for his interest in the field of spying, but also because his shy demeanour gave others a sense of easiness. Ander was instructed to monitor the Klingon's from a distance, and not to interact with them. The Chief thought his uneasiness and shyness would mask any indication he was actually monitoring them. For the week the envoy was preset, they did not once seem to break any laws or cause any type of disruption. Ander felt bored, yet somewhat relieved that nothing happened on his assignment.

When the envoy left, Ander was called in for an evaluation. The Chief of Security, upon seeing Ander, informed him that he had failed his mission. Ander was extremely dumbstruck by the comment, and asked for elaboration. It seemed that the reason the Klingons did not do anything illegal wasn’t because they were harmless, but because even if they were they could smell Ander’s intentions from a mile away. His shyness and timid-ness masked a strong willed cadet, who would do anything to protect his friends and allies. Being that Klingons were hardly un-intelligent, they wouldn't have done anything illegal under a watchful eye, even if they had intended to.

This was the whole point of the mission. It was not to show Ander how bad of a spy he was, but to show him how great of a security officer he would make. Thus Ander lost any interest he had in applying as an Intelligence Officer, and focused on Security. Ander’s higher than average marks gained him some esteem; while not being too high to alienate him from his fellow cadets. His actions even gained the attention of a nearly famous Captain. So, in his last year of the Academy he was given a post on the Banting-J as part of his Cadet Cruise.

This stay on the ship would be short lived, as in his second month, his Father asked him to lead a group of fellow cadets on board a derelict Ferengi vessel; as a support team to the Security detail that was all ready dispatched. When the team teleported over, they were informed that there were no life signs detected on the ship. Ander was instructed to take his team and patrol the corridors outside of the ships engineering section. In order to locate and evaluate any reason why the ship's crew would suddenly vanish.

Once separated from the Security detail however, they were immediately ambushed by a group of raiders, who had used secretive tactics to hide from the Banting's sensors. In an intense phaser battle, all of the team was lost, save for Ander, who was quickly beamed out by an emergency beacon. All responsibility was placed on the Chief of Security's shoulders for allowing a cadet detail to patrol an area without sufficient back up; yet in Ander's report, he placed the full blame on himself. He blamed himself for the ambush, rationalizing that his ineffective leadership was at fault; and thus he refused to continue the cruise. His request was granted due to the grave nature of the situation. However, during the tribunal, Ander was found not to be guilty of any wrongdoing. He was then granted a leave of absence due to the nature of the ordeal.

He returned to his hometown of Lake Armstrong, only to find his mother had died in an accident months before. He was sent a transmission from his Father, explaining that he knew Ander’s mother had died, and that was why he transferred him on board the Banting-J, In the hopes that he could let him down after the Cadet Cruise had been completed.

Under normal circumstances, that experience may have soured a man’s aspirations of serving Starfleet, however his resolve became more absolute. In order to honor his mother’s wishes of him becoming an officer of Starfleet, he requested immediate assignment into the Sixth Fleet.

Soon after, he was given a position on the USS Edison as a Security Officer. Though, somewhat shy around his new crew mates, he quickly warmed up to his superior office, Lt. Zara Kestra. The two were positioned on the same detail during an escort mission for a Gorn Ambassador. Several attempts were made on the ambassador’s life, including the implantation of a changeling among the crew. Zara and Kestra thwarted it’s initial attack and were targeted for termination as well. Several times the two battled the fierce predator, and the close proximity created a bond neither of them needed, wanted, or even thought of.

Shortly after, Ander and Zara found themselves hand-bound together, in a ceremony on Earth. After that, a new position opened for Ander. While he had no more intentions of pursuing a career in Intelligence, Captain Thorsson felt he was ready to conduct the training for a Field Operative.

While months long, the training seemed to give Ander the small boost of confidence he needed to Command a Team. While the mission he was on is still classified, it is known he did indeed take command, and it was successful. However, Ander would find that his permanent position would be a dream job. With the growing conflicts in Gorn space, Star Fleet Intelligence needed several Analysts and Operatives stationed close by to be ready when the time came. Ander was then sent to the Athena, under the command of the very crew that flew the Edison, as Chief Tactical Officer.

In the first mission as tactical officer, he soon learned that an old enemy from the Banting-J had escaped prison and boarded the Athena. there, he revealed to him a dark secret about the real events that Ander had endured on the Banting. The entire ordeal, was sealed in a file code named Operation Gold bar.

MEDICAL DATABASE EXTRACT

Physical Extract

Patient is in good physical condition. Heart rate 65 BPM. Blood pressure 128/70. Patient has excellent upper body strength, giving credit to his hobby in Boxing. Patient suffers from an injury in his right leg. There is a 17 inch scar from his thigh to his knee. Medical records show an incident in Lake Armstrong when the Patient was 14 years old. There is significant nerve damage to the right leg, causing Patient to walk with a limp. Patient is unable to run more than 5 MPH, and can only maintain that speed for 3 minutes.

There is no trace of controlled substances in the Patients blood. Patient does have a history of consuming synthehol. This can be attributed to the pain the Patient fells when walking for an extended period of time. Physical Therapy sessions are encouraged, however, unnecessary for Patient to full fill his duties.

Psychological Extract

Ander does not fit the quote "Common mould" of Starfleet Applicants. While he has a strong sense of honor and justice, he also holds a great deal of guilt for the death of his mother, as well as his Parent’s separation.

Ander has parental issues with his father. Damien J Hawkins is now an ex-Captain who was removed from Starfleet with a dishonorable discharge. The experience aboard the Banting-J, which Ander is reluctant to talk about, has left Ander with a much more than usual sense of responsibility for the well being of others. He since became withdrawn from his fellow officers, in the hopes of not becoming too close to experience loss for another time. Although, this is a normal reaction to the deaths of people under command, he has been unable to recover from it. In reaction, he has admitted to an addiction to synthehol or if available, he will consume alcohol. He hides this by blaming the wound he received as a child. However debilitating, it is in my opinion that most of the pain is psychological.

In reference to his fear of sharp objects... If Ander sees a bladed object, he becomes very uneasy. He has the ability to react if threatened, but it does leave him severely shaken. This is similar to shell shock or other phobias in which the patient fears imminent harm. With the ordeal he went through in Lake Armstrong, I actually commend him for the state at which he came out. It takes intense fortitude and a lot of will power to learn from experiences like that instead of cowering in fear of them. With counselling and phobia treatment, he may yet overcome this.

His habits however, have not interfered with his duties. He was an exemplary officer aboard the Banting-J, and no charges were filed when he boarded the vessel and lost his team. His strong sense of moral obligation actually drives him to excel, and his problems with intimacy will only improve when he is placed in an environment where he has to learn to count on others. On the provision that he agrees to a bi-monthly re-evaluation by either myself or an on site ship’s counsellor to track his progress, I see no reason not to recommend him fit for duty.
