Blake is the Executive Officer aboard the USS Hyperion (NCC-7438-F).
[edit] BACKGROUND
As a child, Blake Cassidy never had an issue telling his elders, teachers and whomever he could, when he thought they where doing something wrong.
His father, Arthur Cassidy, taught him the basics of fielding and batting in baseball. They had regular games of catch, as it was found to calm him after a particularly troublesome interaction. Though the tradition fell off with entrance of high school.
In his elementary education he was labeled a “trouble maker” after one incident in third grade. The story according to record is that his teacher had incorrectly told the class not to touch the toads at the pond or they might get warts. After recess however she came back from the teachers lounge to find a rather large toad in desk drawer where she kept her purse.
He didn't necessarily take pleasure in the action, and he claims it was never malicious. However, it was always clear that he found it his duty to correct people, when and where he could. This wouldn't have irked as many people as it did if he stopped making a joke out of it. More often then not, his assessment of a teacher would be accompanied by a wry joke.
In High school Blake made few friends due to his attention to detail and bad jokes. However the ones he did manage to make friends with, were good people and soon they where close friends, bad jokes and all. He was often at odds with his professors, and some went directly out of their way to make his life harder. The expected more, the and pushed harder. He wasn't a bad student, and passed almost every class thrown his way with a “B” or higher, even those with malicious professors.
Blake, always wanting to better himself, and never the one to step down from a challenge, also taught himself to be ambidextrous during long nights of homework. Soon he was writing with both hands and then after months of practice he started to play games of chess against himself, using both hands. He also stretched his training to the baseball diamond, with some help he started switch hitting, and playing catch with whichever hand he felt like that day.
Blake Played catcher for the varsity team for his last three years of high school, and was an integral part of the teams successes in his senior year. He ended high school with a Batting average of .450, with over 25 runs batted in each season. Even though he played well, for him it was always a game of numbers and technical skill, he lacked the fun that the others always had with it. In the batters box, he was a switch hitter, which combined with hit technical ability made him a hitter to be feared.
Blake's mother, Grace, taught him to cook when he was younger, figuring that if he cooked something himself, he would be less likely to fault it. He very much enjoyed good food, and in high school he would often make dinner for the family, as his mother and father often worked late. Blake's favorite dish to make is a prime rib, with home made horseradish sauce, Garlic Green beans and roasted potatoes. Though he also makes a very nice Arrabbiata sauce.
School counselors figured he was not being challenged enough by high school and urged him to apply for Star Fleet hoping that the challenge would push him to break his habit. He didn't. Blake worried that he would not be the quality that the fleet was after, so he applied to a number of second rate Colleges and Universities instead.
He was accepted at many of them, though he ended up in a university on the eastern coast of the united states, and was an over achiever there. While there he studied Applied Mathematics, and Computer Science. Two years later he lost a bet to one of his professors there over which of them was correct on a math problem in one of his advanced classes. He mistakenly dropped a negative while working it through, and though very close he was wrong.
Never one to shirk duty, he applied to Star Fleet as his penance. He passed the tests with flying colors, to his own amazement, and was accepted for transfer in the next term.
At the academy Blake started to forgo social events and instead could usually be found pouring over text books and practice problems. For the first and second years he lost himself in his studies. He chose engineering mostly on a whim, though in true Blake style he never looked back and continued to peruse it, aiming to understand as much as he could and always pushing himself to higher and higher standards. Through some stroke of fate he ended up showing a knack for the field anyway.
As his third year started, it was looking to be the same routine of class and study, study and class. Until, one of his professors requested that he tutor a younger engineer, through some troubles she was having. Her name was Kelly. Blake, always willing to help people, he was very successful with helping Kelly through her classes and was soon holding regular tutoring sessions.
Kelly and he however, quickly became close friends, and anyone watching the situation could see that she was doing a quality job at drawing him out of his shell. She took him to baseball games, dances, and a plethora of other events, and he tended to enjoy himself. He even picked back up his catchers glove from high school and played for the team at the academy. His attitude towards mistakes and his determination to do well making him a relative bad ass behind the plate. He quickly became a driving force on the field, generally shouting out instructions to his teammates during play, and closely analyzing the opposition. People were sometimes surprised upon meeting him off the field that was not a marine, and generally a much more caring, easy going, and fun loving individual then what he displayed on the field. They often commented on his ferocity on the field, as compared to off. He and Kelly stayed together until Blake graduated and was assigned a position. Even then, the break up was due to interstellar distances, not issues with the relationship.
At one point, in his fourth year, during a training exercise in the Australian outback, he was charged with defusing a series of mines. He proceeded approximately half way through the course when he accidentally cut a wrong wire causing a set of them to go off in his face. While in recovery it was discovered that extreme amounts of blood, caused him to becomes extremely nauseous, and he would often pass out at the sight. He was kept under sedation for two weeks so the doctors could finish cleaning him up and start healing the wounds.
In retrospect he has always wished he could go back and thank that professor from college. Unfortunately they lost contact with each other in his second year at the academy. Luckily the high school counselors were right, to an extent. He has taught himself to sit on his hands, so to speak, unless there is something amazingly wrong with the situation. This is probably in no small part due to his relationship with Kelly.
Upon joining the crew of the Hyperion, Blake quickly took an initial dislike to the head of Engineering, Raven Kiera-Adams. The issue between them was probably more his fault then he is entirely willing to admit. After one incident in which he was beaten bloody a strange woman, he started to reevaluate. He is currently striving to show Raven that he is capable, can be a good team player, and can learn from his mistakes. Even though the two got off to a rough start, he plans to fix that and hopes to someday prove to her that he is good enough to work with her. He is also trying to become friends with Geneva V'Pau. He has completely fallen for her. They finally, after much dodging around the fact on both sides, came out and told each other how the felt in early November of 2386.Early that December Blake was asked to help the Hazard team as an Engineer while Raven was with children. Over the holidays the he and Geneva spent much time together and made a special point of it on the 25th. They also spent Blake's birthday together. During work on his birthday, while studying a device for Colonel Adams he discovered that while it was thought to be a bomb made for forcing Stars to go supernova early, i was actually only an experimental design made for studying the reaction first hand.
Always curious and wanting to understand Blake made a point to discover all that he could about Waterford prior to their imminent rescue, hoping that it would be more then an attempt.
Soon after returning to earth for much needed repairs Blake was promoted unexpectedly to a junior grade lieutenant and placed as the executive officer aboard the USS Hyperion (NCC-7438-F), under A commodore Ambler Furry.
The USS Hyperion (NCC-7438-F), reassigned to the Hurucan sector, joining the crew for their voyage was both a Commodore Patterson, and Kogga. Kogga was a representative of the business group known as Consolidated Enterprises. Barely out of the Sol system one of Patterson's men was murdered. Blake, being the one who found the body, was held for questioning, though was proven innocent when Kogga himself admitted his guilt to both Commodore Ambler Furry and Commander Scott Donnelly who was put in charge of the investigation. Blake was promoted to Lieutenant following his hard work on the investigation.
