Carl Karnis

Lieutenant Carl Karnis is the half El-Aurian, half Human Chief Engineer of the the USS Cambrian. He served in that role on both the Akira-class (NCC-74986) and Nebula-class (NCC-74986-A) incarnations of the ship. His mother is a high-ranking officer within Starfleet Science; his sister Leia is currently a Nurse, also aboard the Cambrian.

[edit] BACKGROUND

Carl Karnis was born in a small town in England, son of Arnold Karnis - an Engineer working on the Flagship for Admiral Depat, Commander of the 8th Expeditionary Fleet - and his 580 year old El-Aurian wife, Commodore Marin Karnis - a senior officer instructing at Starfleet Academy.

Carl was brought up mostly by his mother, with his father out for long periods working on his ship. It wasn't until four years later when Carl's younger sister Leia was born that their father transferred to Earth to teach at the Academy; shortly afterwards he was promoted to Master Chief Petty Officer of Starfleet, and made Command Master Chief of the Academy.

However the family didn't stay together long. Shortly after the outbreak of the Dominion War, their father was once again recalled to serve on a starship, much to the protest of their newly promoted mother, who had taken up office as the Deputy Chief of Starfleet Science. In 2374, eight months after the second failed invasion by the Borg, their father was killed in action during the battle to retake Deep Space Nine from the Dominion.

Carl decided there that he wanted to join Starfleet like his father, so two months after his 18th birthday he joined the Academy, following his fathers footsteps and joining as an Enlisted Engineer. However, it quickly became obvious to Carl's Instructors that he would be better suited as an officer, so they transferred him into the first year of Cadet training.

Carl found the Academy pretty simple to adapt to; however, he did struggle on one aspect - he often neglected to get permission before he did something. Despite that flaw, he graduated four years later.

Carl was granted a three month apprenticeship at McKinley Shipyards after his graduation - to give him an insight in starship design and construction - before being posted to his first real assignment aboard the USS Cambrian.

Life on the Cambrian started well. The ship fell into a few scuffles, but nothing serious, and Carl quickly made Assistant Chief Engineer, and within 12 months received his half pip. However Early into his second year, the Chief Engineer vanished mid mission. Carl was made Acting Chief Engineer while they investigated. After Security reached no conclusion concerning the missing Chief Engineer, it was decided that Carl continue as Acting Chief.

Part way into his third year on the Cambrian, the ship came under attack by a rogue group of Klingons. The Cambrian - outnumbered - was quickly overcome, and despite the best efforts of the crew the ship was torn to pieces. Carl, who had been fighting to keep the ship running in Engineering, suffered serious injuries when console blew out in his face. A coolant leak killed over half of the Engineers; Carl blames himself for not thinking fast enough.

Somehow the Cambrian survived the brutal assault, but barely, Carl spending a good portion of the battle unconscious. With the Cambrian all but destroyed, Starfleet decided to decommission the ship. The Cambrian however was soon replaced with a new Nebula-class vessel. Carl, his half pip replaced with a full pip, resumed his post as Chief Engineer: his pride a little lower, and his right eye missing.
