The Commanding Officer is the senior-most officer aboard a starship or starbase. Commanding officers are most commonly refered to as 'Captain' regardless of rank. A commanding officer typically holds the rank of Captain however smaller vessels may be commanded by a Commander.

Commanding Officers who are in charge of more than one vessel are often granted the rank of Commodore.
