The Constitution class, (also often called Starship class) was the largest and most powerful vessel of it's time. The class was the premier Starfleet front-line vessel for much of the 23rd century, and underwent numerous upgrades to keep it modernized.

The design features a large saucer-shaped primary hull attached by a thin neck to a cylindrical secondary hull (also called the engineering hull), the Warp Nacelles extend upward from the secondary hull.

The class was designed to fulfill numerous roles ranging from border patrol to science and exploration. Top of the line tactical ability was included as well as strong medical and science departments. The overall design proved to be very durable, and the same basic design can still be found during the 24th century in the Ambassador-class, and Galaxy-class vessels.
Various Constitution Class vessels were almost certainly involved in skirmishes with the Klingons during the early-mid 2200's. The fact that the class continued for so long is testament to it's success in the majority of those conflicts.

At least one two Horizon-class vessels underwent conversion to the Constitution Class (Constellation and Republic). Around 2251 all ships underwent upgrades to replace Lasers with Type V phasers, improved shields and warp nacelles, as well as other smaller modifications.
