DaviesUpgrade
From Memory-Zeta
[edit] Overview
The DaviesUpgrade is a software upgrade to Stellar Cartography systems on Nova-class vessels. It was developed in 2379 by then-Lieutenant Nicholas Davies.
[edit] Development
The Nova-class was a new explorer design in 2379. The prototype USS Nova was a testbed for many new untested technologies. Engineers in drydock had maximized the efficiency of the systems, as far as they could on paper. Performance in the field revealed many variables that engineers in drydock could not foresee. As such, the crew of the USS Nova developed many software and hardware upgrades during their first missions.
Nicholas Davies, as Planetary Sciences Section Chief, had the majority of time at Stellar Cartography. Finding the default software clunky and difficult to use, Lieutenant Davies dedicated most of his off-time to developing a more efficient catalog database. He spent six months developing the software with assistance with the ship's engineering and operations personnel.
[edit] Implementation
Late in 2379, Lieutenant Davies backed up the old Stellar Cartography software to an offline LCARS database and installed his upgrade. The upgrade compressed and maximized space usage, saving nearly 100 kiloquads of storage space. It also sped up the cataloging process, making the whole system 30% more efficient.
After three months of testing and evaluation, the Commanding Officer named and recommended the DaviesUpgrade to be installed in all subsequent Nova-class vessels.
