Dead on Arrival

From Memory-Zeta

The crew of the USS Bismarck is dispatched to investigate a 50 year old distress call originating from the USS Bermuda, a ship thought to have gone missing half a century ago.

[edit] Summary

The USS Bermuda, a Constellation class starship, disappeared over 50 years ago. After an unsuccessful search, the vessel was declared lost. Finally, the distress call was picked up by DS19 and the Bismarck was dispatched to investigate. Arriving at the source of the distress call, they located the Bermuda floating in decaying orbit of an uninhabited M-Class planet. Teams were sent to investigate both the ship and the planet.

While the team investigating the ship used EVA suits and attempted to get power and life support online, the planet side team found ruins that might have been a colony established by the crew that were forced to abandon ship. The ruins were deserted, and soon, several crew members began exhibiting startling behavior, leading to several injuries and a death, due to recklessness.

The away teams were ordered to return to the ship, but it was discovered that they could no longer establish contact with the Bermuda, shortly after the ship got life support online. The away team from the planet was quarantined as a precaution, which quickly became important, when it was discovered that the members of the away team had been infected with a parasite. While Science and Medical teams worked to try to cure the infection, the quarantined crew members began hallucinating more and more.

Meanwhile, on the Bermuda, with life support back online they got out of their EVA suits. Unfortunately, this leads to them also being infected, and they quickly began succumbing to hallucinations. On the Bismarck, it was discovered that Lieutenant Badr, the only infected Betazoid, didn't seem to be exhibiting symptoms. Analysis showed that Psilosynine, a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in Betazoid telepathy, seemed to be preventing the parasite from developing. By isolating Mister Badr, they found that the inhibited form of the parasite could be fought off by the individuals immune system.

With this new development, the Medical Staff was able to synthesize artificial Psilosynine and give it to the crew, allowing them to fight it off and recover with no lasting effects. With this breakthrough they beamed back the other away team and were able to treat them. After reporting in, they were ordered back to port, while another vessel was equiped to handle the situation and would later be dispatched to retrieve the ship.
