Defiant Class vessels are small and agile, with nacelles integrated within the hull. Interior space is very limited and spartan. Initial tests indicated that the vessel was unstable, and had to be downgraded to correct it. The lead ship for the class did not follow previous Starfleet pattern of re-issuing an old registration number with a letter prefix.

The Defiant project began in 2366 in an attempt to build a small, but powerful ship to counter the perceived Borg threat. During the vessel's initial tests it exhibited structural problems, and with the Borg threat lessening following the battle of Wolf 359 the project was shelved. The vessel was pulled out of storage in 2371 as the Dominion became a threat in the Bajor Sector.
