Derek is a former Chief Science Officer within Sixth Fleet, serving aboard the USS Saturn before his retirement.

[edit] BACKGROUND

Pre-Starfleet
Derek's mother Taylor was returning to her designated outpost on a shuttlecraft after shore leave. An unknown ship attacked her, disabling sensors and damaging warp drive. She escaped, but later found herself facing three Romulan Warbirds, Inside Romulan space. They took her into custody, and interrogated her over the course of two months, just to figure out exactly why she was there. Derek was conceived within that time. Taylor did not consent, but she really didn't have any choice. She finally escaped with the help of the Romulan Underground.

Derek was born on the Cyrul IV outpost near the Romulan neutral zone. He was kept very much a secret from everyone else at the outpost. Taylor then decided to put in for reassignment away from the neutral zone. She, and Derek, were bounced all around Federation space for the next fifteen years, until Taylor landed a more permanent job at Utopia Planitia.

Taylor never married, though now that Derek is out of the house, she has begun to date again. Derek never really had any friends. Taylor kept him in the house most of the time, fearful of racism. Derek did sneak out sometimes in his teens to meet other kids his age. Mom's teachings were very general. Although she did teach Derek as much engineering and science she could. Derek was a wiz at the theory, but couldn't get the application down. She also taught Derek about his heritage, and everything she knew about Romulans.

Greg Derek's older brother urged Derek to join Starfleet. Derek and Greg are really close, about as close as brothers get.
Starfleet History
Derek attended Starfleet Academy purely to pursue a career as a scientist, though not as an officer. He felt the burden of command was not his forté. He was posted at Starbase Tango where he went on a mission to rescue a cadet from the Orion Syndicate. During this mission, he had first-hand training in combat, espionage, and some science thrown in for fun. Shortly after returning, Derek was posted to the USS Saturn.

Derek served with distinction on the USS Saturn for four years. He even earned a field commission during that time. Early in 2381,

Upon return to the Saturn, Derek met his wife, Indira Boques-Sutherland, the Chief of Security. They were married in a service officiated by the captain, Parx Tong. Shortly thereafter, Derek tendered his retirement paperwork and followed his family to Indira's posting at Starbase FarReach, where their twins Michael and Taylor were born.

Education

Mostly home-schooled by Mom. The frequent re-assignments and obvious racial issues kept him from entering public schools. He spent two years at university studying the various sciences, but dropped out due to a combination of failing grades (girlfriend) and racism. Attended Starfleet Academy to finish his astrophysics degree, and to get away from the racism. Also took a few diplomatic courses as well as as many Romulan classes as possible.

Languages Known: Federation Standard, Romulan.

Likes: Romulan culture, "Reunification", Ambassador Spock, astrophysics, quantum mechanics, girls, holodeck programs, wave runners.
Dislikes: Racism, temporal anomalies, temporal physics, Commander Sela, food that still moves upon the plate.
Strengths / Talents: Enthusiastic about his work. Very loyal to those he considers friends. Dedicated to ship and the Federation as a whole. He is never overly self-conscious of his heritage.
Weakness / Limitations: Sometimes too enthusiastic about his work. When in the company of females (especially those he likes), he becomes quite distracted, and makes mistakes. Is extremely intolerant of racism, rarely to the effect of violence.
Ambitions, quirks, interests & hobbies: Rather shy, but enjoys the company of others. Is understanding of those who are of different species. Very much wants a peaceful alliance between the Federation and the Romulan Empire. Since getting married, has grown out of his shyness mostly. His primary ambition at this point is to raise his family successfully and to protect them from harm.
Special Abilities: Derek has developed the uncanny ability to 'jack' into computers and interface directly with his mind.

Physical Description: Thin and wiry. Pointed ears and forehead ridges, but not as pronounced as full Romulan. He also has a silver ring embedded into his temple which acts as a data jack to link his mind with any computer system.
