Romulus destroyed

The Romulan home system was destroyed in June of 2387 by a supernova of the Hobus antimatter star. The aftermath threw the entire Romulan Star Empire into turmoil, the future of which is still unknown.

[edit] Background

The Hobus star wasn't identified as being composed of antimatter until it was too late. Vulcan and Romulan governments didn't believe the data; that they had missed the detail over all these years. Ambassador Spock did his best to contain the threat with an artificial black hole, but not before the Romulan homeworld was destroyed. Spock's last known coordinates were near to the singularity, and his last transmission admitted he was too close to escape the event horizon. He is presumed lost.

[edit] Immediate Aftermath, 2387

Romulus, Remus, and a 14 light-year sphere around the Hobus star were completely annihilated. Where Hobus used to be now sits a very small black hole. As the mass of the black hole nearly exactly matches the mass of the original Hobus system, the gravity profile of the region has not changed.

Nearly the entire population of the Romulan homeworld was killed in the process. The bodies of what remained of the Romulan government were found floating in open space nearby, presumably lost along with a Federation evacuation task force. With a power vacuum, individuals attempted to fill the void themselves. Throughout the Empire, numerous factions called themselves the true heirs of power. With the loss of the Debrune Teral'n, the symbol of the Praetor, nobody could prove or disprove the claims. Civil war breaks out throughout the Empire.

The last eight years of peace had been good to most of the Empire. Trade with the Federation had begun to help many outlying worlds, and the Neutral Zone was slowly becoming a relic of the past. With the government gone, worlds close to the Federation begin to ask for help and defense. The Federation Council quickly approves and a fleet of vessels set out on humanitarian and defense missions into the Empire.

The Klingons smell weakness and quickly begin to annex as much territory as they can. Some worlds fall peacefully, some not so much. Within the year, the Klingons begin to encounter worlds protected by the Federation, and tensions rise.

Intelligence out of what remains of the Romulan Star Empire is difficult to come by. From all reports, the weaker Romulan factions have been eliminated or absorbed into the stonger factions. At this time it is estimated that there are four or five strong groups controlling the majority of the remaining Empire. These factions continue the civil war, attempting to establish dominance over the Empire.

The strongest faction appears to be largely military, and rumors point towards the remaining Tal Shiar as leading it. They control the Romulan home sector, as well as their own base, rumored to be in the Belak system. They call themselves the Romulan Star Empire, and reports state they are focusing on internal stability and not possible invasion. The Federation is a secondary consideration to them.

Federation and Klingon space has expanded somewhat into the Empire (see inset). Worlds nearest to the Federation have applied for admittance into the Federation, while the Klingons occupy their territory by force. The border between these two areas is a hotbed of tension as the Klingons continue to press for more territory, and the Federation is assisting those now independent worlds.

A secret space station was found outfitting existing Norexan-class warbirds with advanced technology, possibly reverse-engineered Borg technology. It has since been destroyed, limiting the number of retrofit Romulan warbirds.

[edit] 2390s

The Romulan Star Empire is finally stable once more, occupying the most coreward territory of the original Empire. It is not known at this time if a peace has been established with other factions, or if they have been conquered. The Empire has become isolationist again, and reports are few and far between, though some rumors are filtering through that they are considering an alliance with the Federation.

The Klingons have reinstated their neutral zone with the Federation as skirmishes and disputes continue. All-out war has been avoided so far, but how long will that last? The old peace of the last few decades is now history.

A beacon has been built where the Romulan home system used to be. The hull has been engraved with the nearly twenty billion names of lives lost when the Hobus supernova consumed the region.
