Denise was a General Practitioner on New Deridous.
[edit] BACKGROUND
Denise was born to a Betazoid father and a Human mother. Her mixed physiology necessitated medical treatments throughout her first few years. During this time, she developed an infection in her brain that resulted in an inability to produce audible speech, making her effectively mute. However, she developed telepathic abilities early. By the time she was 8 years old, her telepathic abilities were on a par with adult full-Betazoids, and she is now able to communicate totally telepathically. In those instances where she needs to communicate with a being that cannot be reached telepathically, one of her family members will usually serve as a translator.
At the age of 8, Denise left Darona and went to live with her mother’s family on Earth, all of whom live in the same city and are very close. She loved the close-knit large family, and decided she wanted to have a large family herself someday. In college, she became close to Cherijo and Maria, and through them Nick and Sakic. In time, the five friends decided to join in a group marriage so that all of them could have a large, happy family without giving up their individual career goals.
After everyone was out of school, and with two of the family members in Starfleet, the family decided to move to Deridous IV, where Denise could open up a family practice clinic. She moved there ahead of the rest of the family, only to find out that Deridous IV was not the safest of places. She was kidnapped for her medical expertise, but released unharmed. She also was forced to treat some an escaped Cardassian criminal while Cherijo was held hostage, and later found her family sheltering another family, the Wilders, placed in the Etain household by Starfleet Intelligence for their safety.
The worst tragedy occurred when the entire planet of Deridous IV was destroyed, breaking up from within. Denise escaped the planet, along with two of her children – Victoria and Sage. Allendo also escaped, and Sakic and Maria were offplanet at the time, serving in Starfleet. But Nick and his children, along with Cherijo, died in the catastrophe. The family that remained relocated with the rest of the Deridous colony to Norvan III, or New Deridous, where Denise worked to get her clinic going again.

- Special Abilities: Telepath – can send to individuals or groups. Restricted to approximately speaking distance – a single room or line-of-sight. Strong on ‘sending’ telepathically, but weaker on ‘receiving’. Does not ‘receive’ much unless purposely ‘listening.’
- Languages: Standard, Betazoidii, some Bolian and Bajoran
- Strengths/Talents: Very warm & personable. Is adept at making people feel at ease. She is a strong researcher, but general practice is her first love.
- Limitations/Weaknesses: Her muteness is a severe disadvantage when communicating over vocal channels or when working with computers. She carries with her at all times a PADD with an attached keyboard that she can use to interface with computers, or to simulate vocal speech.
- Likes: Enjoys spending time with her family. Laughs easily.
- Dislikes: For obvious reasons, is less comfortable around those who are mentally deaf. Also, of course, irritated by people who are intolerant of her disability, or others’ disabilities.
- Quirks: Enjoys the initial reaction of people who are on the other end of a comm conversation when one of her younger children is ‘speaking’ for her. (Her children have very good vocabularies thanks to this practice.)
- Hobbies/Interests: She usually has several medical research projects going on. But outside of work, anything that involves spending time with her family.
- Ambitions: Denise’s two greatest ambitions were to have a large family and to have her own Family Care Clinic. She has achieved them both.
- Education: Denise’s early education was on Betazed, and focused mostly on the mental disciplines. When she came to Earth at 8 years old, she had a normal Terran education. She received her doctorate in medicine at Vanderbilt Medical University on Terra, and her residence was in the ER there.
Family:
Denise was one of five co-spouses in a group marriage, and they have a number of children. The five originating spouses were Nick, Sakic, Denise, Cherijo, and Maria. All but Sakic, a Bolian, and Denise were human. They acquired six children. Amanda, Dusty, and Lee were Nick’s children from his first marriage. Victoria is Maria’s daughter. Allendo, the oldest, and Sage, the youngest, were both adopted. Two of the spouses and three of the children were lost in the destruction of Deridous IV, leaving Denise to care for three children by herself.

- Distinguishing Marks: Her red hair is very obvious, gets sunburns easily due to her light skin.
- Physical Description: During work hours, Denise is always very professional in appearance, with her abundant hair pulled back in a ponytail and a serious demeanor. After hours, though, Denise literally ‘lets her hair down’ and is much more relaxed.
