[edit] BACKGROUND
Personal History
Elissa MacKinnon was born to Garrison and Maya MacKinnon. Her parents were owners of a small, respectable shipping company. Elissa's early life was simple. She went to school and would help out with her parents work. She was eventually to take over the family buisness when her mother and father retired. Elissa would often come with her parents on cargo run's, becoming a fine pilot in her own rights. When she was 15 she aquired her piloting license.
At the age of 16 Elissa was travaling on a cargo run to Antaries IV with her parents when they were attacked by pirates. When the ship was disabled the pirates boarded for a raid, killing many of the crew, including both of Elissa's parents, who were trying to hide her. Elissa witnessed their deaths and was taken prisoner by the pirates.
After some time imprissoned in their hidden base the pirates indoctrinated her into their service after learning she was a skilled starpilot. To ensure her cooperation she was fitted with implants that gave a direct link from her brain to a computer system via a set of 4 data jack's at the back of her neck. These implants, which are illegal in the Federation allowed Elissa to connect into a computer and access it with a mere set of cables. But this also allowed the pirates to controle her. Special programming was installed into the hardware that blocked her controle of the implants, but allowed the pirates to inhibit her abilities, or even kill her if she were to do anything agenst their orders while flying. Thus equiped Elissa was forced to pilot fighter craft on raids.
For every act of piracy, murder and destruction she was forced to commit she hated herself. She would try to escape, but would only find herself incopacitated and then to be tortured as punishment. By the time she was 20 Elissa was at her wits end. Every escape attempt had met with failer. She now contemplated suicide, ending her life to presurve whatever scraps of sanity she had left within her. That or fall compleatly to the dark side and become what she hated most, what had killed her family and enslaved her.
But fate had something else in store for her. On March 19th 2374 Starfleet Marines, having receaved new intelligence, attacked the pirates hidden base to finally put an end to the terror caused by them in the sector. When the Marines reached the part of the base she had been kept in Elissa surrendered to them imediatly. She would rather spend the rest of her life in a Federation prison colony than where she was now. Elissa even aided the marines in gaining access to the central sections of the base where they captured most of the organizations leaders and her enslavers, though several managed to escape.
After conciderable debriefing by Federation security and trial in the courts it was determined that the crimes she had committed were not of her own accord and all charges agenst her were dropped and she was granted freedome to return to as normal a life as she would be able to make for herself. Elissa decided to join Starfleet, the people who had set her free. She felt that she had to atone for all the wrong she had done, even though she had been granted innocence.
Despite being illegal in the Federation her nural implants were left intact, Starfleet Medical determining that their removal was impossible withought killing her or at least causing irriversable brain damage. All pirate controle programming was removed from the implants though, allowing her full normal use of them uninhibited and withought fear of anyone using them agenst her.
Starfleet Career History
Elissa MacKinnon joined Starfleet Academy shortly after her rescue by Starfleet Marines and compleation of trials agenst her pirate captors. She was 21 years of age and in general more experienced in fighter piloting and combat than other cadets in her class. But with her hard earned experience came a short temper and a ruthlessness not encouraged by Starfleet Aerospace instructors. She had been tought to dogfight dirty by pirates and her istructors were maddened by the risky and unorthadox way she flew in training exercizes. As well she was unpopular with the other pilot cadets, who resented her experience, disliked her attitude and did not trust her origins.
After four years of Academy training, where she almost ended her Starfleet career 3 times, Elissa graduated with the rank of Ensign and her pilot's wings, a possesion she prizes to this day. She was quickly assigned as a Tactical Fighter Pilot to the USS Hyperion NCC-7438-D. Her first act coming aboard the Hyperion was walking into Captain Hannah O'Halloran, her new commanding officer, as she entered the bridge to report for duty (an event she wishes her fellow pilots would forget ever happened) During her first few weeks aboard the massive Vicent class fleet carrier she flew the Hyperion class superiority fighter. With the transfer of several pilots out from the squadron she was quickly switchted to the possition of Gamma flight leader and traded her Hyperion for an Aurora bomber. Her assigned backseater was one of the Hyperion's resurve pilots, Lt. Wes Janson, who has been flying with her ever since.
2380 Elissa assumed the role of Wing Commander, replacing Luna wing's outgoing commander. Some friction came from this as she had passed up several pilots with longer tenure aboard the Hyperion when she was promoted to the command possition. During a mission to dismantal an out of service deep space outpost the Hyperion came under attack by pirates. Elissa and her fighter wing met them in battle, destroying or focing off most of the enemy. But a final attacking pirate cruiser managed to knock Elissa's Aurora bomber's shields down and transport her out of the cockpit. There she encountered the pirate John Grissom, one of the men who had killed her parents and held her captive for half a decade. He had detected the signature from her implants and used it to locate and transport her aboard his ship to use as a hostage to get the Hyperion to surrender. Captain O'Holloran did not take the bate and boarded the pirate ship with Marines. During the ensuing battle Elissa managed to free herself and attacked Grissom. The two of them fought to kill each other, almost succeeding before the Hyperion's Marine's stormed the pirate ship's bridge. She had been badly wounded during the fight, needing medical attention to treat broken bones and stab wounds. Her enemy had survived as well, captured by the Marines and imprisoned. He now awaites trial for his crimes.
When Commander Ambler Furry took the possition of Executive Officer aboard the Hyperion Elissa found her first major rival in Starfleet since the Academy. Everything about the man drove her up the wall. His attitude, mannerism and short temper. Several times the two of them enguaged in heated arguments on the bridge none the less! And though she never admitted it and never will, she and Furry had a lot in common, their experiences and personalities to similar to be compatable. She was incredibly relieved when he had been re assigned to the USS Edision.
2381 saw the re-organization of the Hyperions fighter compliment, Luna Wing into the 33rd Aerospace Flight Group and Elissa's title changed from Wing commander to group commander. This year also saw the demise of the USS Hyperion-D, which Elissa blames herself partly for, even though she could not have done any better in defending her command ship. The Hyperion fell under attack by several Klingon ships and aRomulan cruiser, which she ended up ramming with her stardrive section. Elissa and her pilots did wonderfully agenst the klingon's, disabling one of them outright, but the cruiser far outmatched the squadron.
With the commissioning of the USS Hyperion-E Elissa still held the command possition for the 33rd Tactical Fighter Group, which was now assigned to the new Nebula class starship. It was during this time that she began having nightmares of her past. The trial for the pirate Grissom was drawing near and her own mind had begun to play nasty tricks on her has she awaited her call to Earth to stand as witness against him for his crimes.
But other events would keep her from testifying. A short time thereafter Elissa was gravely wounded, almost killed, during combat when her Aurora, damaged and disabled, collided with debree. Her injuries should have been fatal. Her legs crushed, her left arm severed and a host of internal injuries. She would have perished had it not been for the quick and skilled responsiveness of the Hyperion's medical staff. Her legs were healed, but her arm had been too badly damaged to ever concider re attaching. Rather an artificial one would be called for. But Elissa hesitated on recieving it. Believing her career as a combat pilot to be over she refused to accept it. She needed to remain usefull, even to the point of escaping from Sickbay against doctors orders and attempting to return to duty to the horror of her flight crew. She was almost on the verge of resignation.
It wasnt untill the Hyperion arrived at Deridous IV some weeks later that Elissa acceped and recieved a prostetic arm to replace her lost left arm. The new limb brought back much if her confidence as she relearned how to use it and eventually was reinstated to flight status.
The next few months were full of hard missions. Rough on Elissa and her flight personnel. Supply shortages and lack of new pilots made her job increasingly more difficult and stressful. But she managed to pull through and hold her squadrons together. Through all of this her rock hard exterior and rather cold demenor maintained despite all of the internal emotional termoil she felt. She was set against showing any form of weakness to her pilots and deck crew, having maintained such a tough exterior for so long she felt unable to open up to anyone save for Commodore Thornton, and then only at the most stressful and extream occasions.
A mission to the Briar Patch saw her Fighter Group suffer some of it's worst losses ever, an entire squadron wiped out and the other surviving squadrons lost a lot of people during the battle. The loss of pilots hit Elissa hard. It was after this battle that she met replacement pilot, then Ensign Trina Roberts, who would become one of a very very few friends, or what could be concidered a friend in the loosest sense, the best thing that could be hoped for with any sort of friendly relationship with the standoffish Elissa MacKinnon.
Over the next few months things settled back into normal routine for Elissa, and everything was going well enough as she trained her new pilots and got her Fighter Group back to her acceptable levels or readiness.
In 82, after a tangle with Orion pirates Elissa was promoted to the rank of full Commander, a title which she never thought she would obtain. The responsobility the new rank carried Elissa took very seriously and seemed to redouble her efforts to lead and manage her pilots.
Then just a few short weeks after her promotion the Hyperion E, the ship she had just gotten used to calling home, was blown away in battle by Orion pirates. A good many of her pilots died in the battle trying to save the ship, including an Aurora that rammed one of the enemy vessels in an attempt to save their ship with a suicidal kamikazi attack. Seeing a second USS Hyperion destroyed before her eyes and again loosing so many of her pilots, not to mention the loss of so many others on the starship that day was too much for her. She ordered the last Orion ship, though crippled and defenceless, destroyed before turning command of the 33rd over to her exec while she landed and collapsed in total dispair.
A deep depression settled in after the destruction of the Hyperion E. Elissa withcrew herself from almost all public contact, remaining in her quarters just about all the time, save for when her preasence was required. She retained the possition of Commander of the 33rd aboard the new USS Hyperion F but left the operation of the TFG to her exec. The mental and emotional barriars she had built up over the years to protect her from being hurt by the pirates who had enslaved her, or anyone else thereafter, had finally broken down compleatly, worn down slowly over the years, the sense of total loss she now felt had crushed what was left. Despite the best efforts of those around her who she had let get anywhere close to her she just got worse as time went on.
Finally things came to a head when Elissa attempted to take her own life rather than suffer through the pain she felt from all the people she knew who had died. Luckly Lt.Roberts had been passing and managed to override the locks on her door and knock the phaser out of Elissa's hand before she could burn a hole through her head with it.
Elissa was taken to Sickbay and kept under obsurvation for some time while the Chief Medical Officer and several members of the command staff tried their best to bring Elissa out of her depression. It took a long time for her to be released from Sickbay, and even longer for her to be allowed back to flight duty. Elissa underwent several private sessions with now Admiral Thornton herself. Eventually Elissa's condition began to improve and the Doctor no longer concidered her a threat to herself and let her go. Her depression had also been mixed with anger, anger twords herself and what she saw as her failure more than anything else.
Eventually she began to come back, though she was changed. More emotional, less hard and closed off than she had been before. She was still not a pleasent person to be around for sure. Deep down she had changed, her emotional barriers were gone and she was almost a broken woman, despite whatever progress she seemed to make to recover. Eve as she returned to limited duty the depression never left her, she felt more lonely than ever during this time.
Now that she was no longer forcibly trying to distance herself from the Hyperion's crew Elissa began to form a few attachments to certain crewmembers. Admiral Thornton in particular, who had helped her a great deal on several occasions when Elissa had been at her lowest.
When rebels captured the Admiral Elissa was determined to do all she could to help locate and rescue her. And even though other members of the crew eventually found Thornton Elissa put in as much effort to help, though she was left feeling helpless anyways.
It was not untill a few months later, that Elissa met someone who changed things for her. On shoreleave to Risa between missions, Elissa met Commander Dragorn Dimytrik, the newly assigned Chief Intelligence Officer. Dimytrik was undaunted by her unhappy and generally unpleasent demenor upon their first meeting. Strangely enough he asked her to dinner, a social event which she actually enjoyed for one of the first times in her life. This man had been different in about every way from those she had met before. He seemed to understand her and knew how to shortcircut her self destructive thought patturn and make her happy, even if for just a short while. A feeling she had not felt in such a long time it had been foreign to her.
The next day the two of them went down to Risa and spent the remainder of shoreleave there, together. When they returned Elissa had compleatly changed her demenor. Her first appearence on duty had floored her flight deck crew. Rather than the unhappy unsocial woman they had always known, a smiling, even cheerful woman had taken her place. Even though they had only been together a very short time at that point Elissa had already begun to feel very strongly for the man, and a good many members of the ships crew noticed the visible and positive change he had brought about in her.
Upon their meetings Dimytrik took it upon himself to give Elissa a new callsign, which he thought more fitting than 'Pirate'. Rather he suggested 'Phoenix', feeling it to be more appropriate and fitting for her due to her history. He even went so far as to have her Aurora redecorated with a great phoenix painted onto the underside and the new callsign replacing her old one.
Surprisingly Elissa took the change well, liking it actually, rather than seeking heads to decapitate for tampering with her beloved Aurora. She took up the new callsign at that time as well. Flying under the name Phoenix from that time forward.
Not long after, Dragorn Dimytrik asked Elissa to marry him and she accepted. Within a few short months Elissa and Dragorn married, in secret before Dragorn was to depart for a covert mission, a fact which she would not make known to anyone save for a handful of members of the Hyperion's crew until Dragorn had returned.
In mid 2384 while on shoreleave at Earth Elissa ran into her former rival, Ambler Furry, now a Colonel and member of Special Forces. Unlike their last encounter their meeting was on friendlier terms and by the end Furry had offered a new assignment to Elissa, command of a starship within the Special Forces unit known as SWORD VII.
Accepting she took command of the starship USS Arc Angel a few days later and said farewell to the Hyperion, which had been her home for her entire career in Starfleet. For over a year she commanded the Arc Angel as part of SWORD. Elissa had adjusted well to life commanding a ship, but deep down longed to return to the cockpit of a fighter.
Mid 2685 the Arc Angel was detached from SWORD and assigned to general duty within the fleet. Her ship assigned to escorting convoys on on continuing humanitarian aid missions into Cardassian space, Elissa was content to remain with her current assignment despite her growing desire to leade a fighter group. She and her ship did well protecting three convoy runs when, in september 2385 the Arc Angel suffered a massive failure of its warp drive system on the way back to the local Deep Space Station for resupply. The ship was inturned at Antaries Fleet Yards for repairs and a major systems overhaul, including having all of the special hardware installed by SWORD a few years earlier removed from the vessel. Due to the lengthy nature of the overhaul the crew was disbanded and assigned to new duties.
With her impressive record as a combat fighter pilot Elissa was imediatly offered a spot at Starfleet Academy to train new pilots, which she quickly turned down, as she also did with several offeres for staff assignments within Starfleet Fighter Command. Elissa had no want to take any sort of academy or desk job. Having some pull with the Admiralty at the time, Elissa put in her request for a new command directly to Vice Admiral Nausicaa Fairchild, the soon to be retiring director of SWORD. Fairchild, in thanks for Elissa's service to the Special Operations unit, was able to find Elissa a new assignment, commanding the starship USS Formidable. The Formidable's previous commanding officer, who had captained the ship for almost a decade, was rotating off for extended leave. Elissa assumed command May 1, 2385 and took the newly refit starship through its re acceptance trials.
Trials completed in the end of 2385. Elissa and her new command were sent to Starbase 418 in 2386, officially attached to the outpost as the sectors new defence and customes ship, where she would also take up the secondary command of the sector under one Captain Lujan Serege.

Medical and Psychological Extract
"........Elissa is physicaly fit for duty. The nural implants and data terminal implants in the the back of her neck and brain have no negative effect on her performance save for minor skin irritation around the terminals."
"........Despite what she may say Elissa MacKinnon has still yet to fully recover from the trauma of witnessing the murder of her parents, being held prisoner and forced to commit pirate acts for five years of her life. She is short tempered, which has been noted on her record by several altercations at Starfleet Academy and postings aboard starships. Despite her shortcomings she has proved to be a skilled pilot and officer, though it is recomended that she seek regular cousiling sessions."
