The Excelsior class began as a testbed for the Transwarp Project. Power and structural flaws led to the project being shelved, and the sole ship (the USS Excelsior (NX-2000) being downgraded to a standard vessel of the Ingram-class.
Subclasses include:
- Proxima-class (Mk. II)
- Ingram-class (Mk. III)
- Enterprise III-class (Mk. IV)
- Fearless II-class (Mk. V)
- Valley Forge-class (Mk. VI)
- Lakota-class (Mk. VII)
The class features a saucer-shaped primary hull; attached by a neck to a secondary hull (also called the 'engineering hull') with a long flat dorsal area, the Warp Nacelles extend upward from the dorsal secondary hull. The ventral area of the secondary hull has a sleek forward area, then slopes upward to a slender aft section.
