Geordi LaForge was first assigned as the CONN officer on the Galaxy-class USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D), but was promoted to Chief Engineer where he remained for the remainder of the vessel's missions.

Born blind from a rare birth defect, Geordi had to wear a specially designed visor which allowed him to see many different energy spectra. Both his parents were Starfleet officers, thus he moved around a great deal during his youth.
Geordi graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2357 and was assigned as a pilot on the Jovian Run between Saturn and Jupiter in the SOL system. He met Captain Jean-Luc Picard on an inspection tour sometime before 2360, and the Captain was so impressed that he requested that Geordi be assigned to the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) when it was commissioned. In 2365 Geordi was promoted to full Lieutenant and made Chief Engineer of the Enterprise.
In 2371, while on leave after the Enterprise-D was destroyed, Geordi underwent surgery to replace his Visor with ocular implants which gave him the same range of visual information. After the Shinzon incident Geordi took a long-term leave of absence from Starfleet, one of his first projects during this time was to assist the Soong Foundation in studying the B-4 android.
Following the reactivation of Data in 2386, Geordi developed the Jellyfish prototype starship.
