[edit] BACKGROUND
Personal History
George Luther Williams was born on 13 January 2356 at 3:28 a.m. to Brian and Jennifer Williams. George's childhood was a typical one for someone living on a ranch. He grew up with many chores to do before and after school. In time, he began to dislike doing so much as he believed it interfered with his social life. He often got into trouble for not completing his chores before supper; often resulting in him not getting any dessert.
When George entered high school, he no longer wanted to work on the family ranch, but he didn't have a choice. His parents felt that it instilled discipline and hardwork. During the times he wasn't working or in school, he spent a lot of time hunting. Though he wasn't great at it, he mostly enjoyed shooting his rifles, shotguns, and handguns. He preferred the old projectile weapons over ones that used a bolt of energy. He could never explain it to anyone, but that's what he preferred.
It was during high school, that he began to play the string guitar. He liked it over the electric one, because of the portability of it. He practiced sporatically and as a result, he never got good at it. It didn't matter too much to him, since he only did it to relax. This relaxation helped him in determining what he was going to do after high school. During his junior year, he made his decision. He would become a lawyer and have Starfleet pay for it. He had spoken to the recruiter many times to plan out how things would go.
He applied and was accepted to Starfleet Academy at the beginning of his senior year of high school. His father was angry at him, but it didn't last. After speaking, he agreed that althouth he had hoped to pass the ranch on to his son, that his son had to find his own path.
While at Starfleet Academy, George first year was rough and he played his guitar a lot; much to the disappointment of his roommates. In all the time that he had been playing the guitar, he had only learned a few songs. Songs, that his roommates got to hear often and learned to hate. However, with help, he managed to overcome everything and managed to pass his classes. Barely.
During his second year, he continued his general education, but was no able to take pre-law courses that were mandatory. As time went on, he learned to juggle school, homework, and other mandatory activities. It didn't leave him much time, but he quickly realized that this type of atmosphere was exactly what his parents were trying to instill in him. He wrote them a lengthy letter, thanking them for everything they had done.
His final two years went smoothly. He had chosen to become a marine lawyer and went to all the summer marine activities. A few months before graduation, he was informed that he was accepted to both the Starfleet Marine Corps as well as the Starfleet Law School.
George arrived at the Marine Corps' Officer Basic School and quickly realized that "every marine is a rifleman" included lawyers. The only exemption were medical and religious personnel. The primary focus was turning new officers into marines capable leading other marines into battle. Most of everyone would become platoon leaders upon graduation, but not George. Upon graduation, he would return to Starfleet Academy to attend Law School. It was one of the most gruelling 26 weeks of his life and he compared it his plebe (1st year) at the academy.
George began law school and it wasn't something he was used to. He no longer had someone yelling at him to do something. Instead, he could focus primarily on academics. Which was good, because these courses were tougher and more analytical than anything else. The first year was strictly on law itself. The final two years were spent studying for his specialization: Interplanetary Law. He graduated with a 3.75 GPA and was proud. He had never had a GPA that high and he thanked his professors for it. George wasn't expecting it when the Marine Corps said "you are now a First Lieutenant." He celebrated by returning to his parents ranch to rest for a few weeks before reporting for his assignment.
His first assignment as a Starfleet Marine lawyer was at the Sixth Fleet Headquarters where he was assigned to the fleet's JAG Division. Specifally, the Interplanetary Law Department. He was a bit bummed that he wouldn't have his own office, but a cubicle that gave very little privacy. He didn't like too much because he was used as a liaison between the JAG office and the Diplomatic Department.
When his transfer to the Fleet's Marine Division was complete, it was a relief for George. Not because he would be with his marine bretheren, but because he would finally be allowed to utilize his skills.
During his time with the Division's Headquarters, George was promoted to Captain and was appointed the Division's Chief of Interplanetary Law. It sounded prettier than it really was. His job was to ensure that those marines deployed to foreign soil were properlly informed about the laws of the land in which they inhabited.
But his posting was short-lived. He was transferred to Starbase Deep Space 19 to be the sector's Interplanetary Law specialist. But it was mostly because he was affluent in Cardassian. He didn't mind the job too much. It was a far cry from a headquarters posting where the threat level was elevated. He crossed trained with the marines posted there as a rifleman, but it was rare.
As he was finally settling into his role on the base, he received new orders to the USS Bismarck. They were without a legal or diplomatic officer and George's previous work as a liaison between the Fleet's two departments meant he was an obvious choice for the position.
