[edit] Background
A race of near-humans with a feudal government: quite Viking in personality and philosophy. They are xenophobic, but only because they associate the alien races they encounter with the demons and monsters from their folklore; they assign great prestige with hunting such races. They have very few natural resources: instead, they sail around the region like Pirates, raiding ships and other colonies for materials to construct and repair new ships, food for their people, etc.
In terms of territory, they have their homeworld and a handful of colonies. Being xenophobes they're not out for conquest though, but are more intent on the great quest to rid space of alien creatures. Technologically they are less advanced than the Federation but after years of hunting and piracy they have developed their tactics to overcome most obstacles.
Their culture is heavily biased towards the warrior caste, and many of their citizens are fanatics, keen to purge the galaxy. Aboard each Helgaran vessel one Helgard rules over their sub-ordinates. As Gravik of their ships these leaders are responsible for finding targets for their crew so that they can participate in the great purge and take home the spoils for their families.
The Helgard have convinced themselves that they are doing this for the greater good of their species, but in actual fact they are in it for the spoils. With the society having few natural resources the person/group/clan/ship who can bring in new and bigger hordes of treasure etc, would have great wealth and standing within their society.
