Horta are Silcon based life forms native to Janius V. They were discovered during Kirk's initial 5 year mission. The Horta have an unique genology: every 10,000 years, all but one female Horta die off. The watcher stays in the nursery, waiting for the eggs to hatch.

Miners on Janus V were destroying the eggs, not knowing they contained unborn life. When this was discovered and corrected, the Horta, who leave tunnels through solid rock, helped the Miners reach mineral deposits.

In between the 10,000 year solitary watch, numerous Horta are born. The Horta are shaped like a large orange pan pizza, and move with cillia that can carve rocks in seconds. They need an intergrated translator to commuicate, as their non-humanoid structure does not contain vocal cords.
