The Sixth Fleet Intelligence Bureau is an agency within the Fleet Operations branch of Sixth Fleet. It exists as both an in-character and out-of-character entity, and is currently associated with all Intelligence and Diplomatic departments within the Sixth Fleet RPG. It is currently led by Commander Christopher Bauer, played by Jason Atkins.

[edit] Overview

The Sixth Fleet Intelligence Bureau (6IB) was established on behalf of Starfleet Intelligence with a dual purpose. First of all, the agency provided localised intelligence support to the Sixth Fleet, establishing a chain of command through which Intelligence and Diplomatic Officers within the Fleet could operate. It also provided oversight for any intelligence operations taking place in concert with vessels of the Sixth Fleet, and gave Starfleet Intelligence a liaison within the Sixth Fleet Operations infrastructure to help coordinate those efforts. Its second role was the reverse: the Bureau was intended to provide a department to analyse and process any intelligence and tactical information gathered by assets within Sixth Fleet, so that they could be more easily distributed to the rest of Starfleet Intelligence, and to Starfleet as a whole.

[edit] Responsibilities

[edit] Intelligence Positions

There are numerous intelligence positions that Sixth Fleet Intelligence Bureau encompasses. Each position has its own differing responsibilities and clearance level.

[edit] Starfleet Intelligence Positions

Intelligence Analyst

- A low level individual working for Starfleet Intelligence, these do most of the analysis and processing of information that comes in to the agency. Communications on subspace frequencies would be monitored by an analyst for example, who would be watching out for repeating patterns in the Subspace background noise, rogue transmissions, etc. They also collate reports from Fleet Intelligence, so they can be passed on to other areas of Starfleet Intelligence. As a result, though they are just an Analyst, their clearance is as high as a Fleet Intelligence Officer, since they are handling the same sensitive data.

Intelligence Officer

- A mid-level individual within Starfleet Intelligence, these range from people with desk jobs to investigation agents. They don't do anything covert, but do have a certain amount of individual responsibility for decision-making and investigation. Internal Affairs Officers fall into this category. Though not Field Agents, they do still have some intelligence-gathering responsibilities: Intelligence Officers will some times be called up for OC ("Official Cover") missions, such as being inserted as a member of staff into a foreign embassy. This is considered a possible stepping stone to becoming an Intelligence Agent.

Special Forces

- A "junior" Field Agent if you will, Special Forces operatives work in teams rather than individually. They are usually deployed on top-secret assignments, and thus need a fairly high clearance level to have access to the necessary information. However, as a security measure, Special Forces teams tend to be quite cellular, to avoid any member of a Special Forces team from being able to disclose information on other current operations by Starfleet Intelligence. Special Forces operatives are considered to be fairly elite soldiers, and may progress to becoming a Field Agent. However, they are usually more specialized than an Agent: while a Field Agent can do "anything" fairly well, Special Forces operatives tend to excel at a particular area - technical skills, marksman/sniper skills, demolitions, etc. Consisting of both Naval and Marine personnel, they work solely for the Intelligence Bureau, and are totally separate from the Marine Special Forces.

Intelligence Agent

- The Field Agents. They generally work alone, although they might have a support team working with them. They are highly-trained individuals who are not only soldiers, but usually have supplementary skills - good with computers, fluent in several languages, skilled in martial arts, excellent flight skills, Special Forces trained, etc. It is these agents who carry out "under-cover" missions for SFI.

[edit] Other Agency Positions

Intelligence Officer

- Intelligence Officers are either naval or marine personnel. - Intelligence Officers are members of the Command Team with a responsibility to advise the commanding officer of a starship, facility or specialist unit (like a Fighter Group or Marine Detachment) with intelligence deemed appropriate by said Officer for the decision-making process. - Intelligence Officers have a higher security clearance than a standard Fleet Officer; the burden of responsibility lies with them to reveal what information is deemed necessary with regards to the mission's parameters. For example, an Intelligence Officer may receive reports on Cardassia, Romulus and Qo'noS; if the ship is involved with a mission into Klingon space, there is no need for them to disclose the other information.

Diplomatic Officer

- Uniformed Diplomatic Personnel are considered as the more public face of Starfleet Intelligence, and are administered over by a subordinate division within the agency. - Because of their Diplomatic ties, these officers are privy to information not normally revealed to Fleet Officers. Their clearance is not as high as an Intelligence Officer would have, and information is not volunteered to them: they have to instead request "all available intelligence" on their particular situation. Thus, the burden of responsibility lies with their superior within Fleet Intelligence: Diplomatic Officers receive intelligence on a need-to-know basis.

Department Head

- Because of their ties to the Command Teams, these officers are privy to information not normally revealed to Senior Officers. - Their clearance is not as high as an Intelligence Officer would have, and information is not volunteered to them: they have to instead request "all available intelligence" on their particular situation. Thus, the burden of responsibility lies with their superior within Starfleet Intelligence. - They receive intelligence on a need-to-know basis.
