[edit] BACKGROUND
[edit] Early Life
Jack had a happy child hood. His parents loved each other and all of their boys. He and his brothers were close, even though all four of his brothers were interested in sports and Jack was not. Jack was a sore loser who hated to lose. He knew this was immature behavior but could never keep his emotions in check. This continues to be a weakness that embarrasses Jack from time-to-time. Jack's passion was music. He was a talented drummer, loving the kit. Jack played in several garage bands with fellow kids and the school jazz band. Jack also enjoyed spending his free time at the stables. He liked to ride and generally care for horses.
[edit] Edison Labs Engineering
Jack's father Patrick King was one of the founders of Edison Labs Engineering. Patrick had helped instill a strong interest in science and math in Jack's older brother Matthew and himself. Patrick was never able to connect with Kyle and Samuel (identical twins) in the same fashion. When Jonah was growing up, Patrick was almost never around... he had let his research consume his life for the critical years of Jonah's development. With Jack's interest and understanding of math and science, Jack was accepted into the University of Oxford School of Engineering. Jack graduated 4 years later with a BSME. Eager to get to work, Jack did not pursue a Master's degree.
Jack went to work at his father's company, Edison Labs Engineering. He began his career as a project engineer and worked his way up the engineering management chain. Jack was a solid systems engineer and contributed to the company's continued financial success. In 2367, Jack met Kelly Deveroe... and fell in love. The two were married two years later, in June of 2369. After five perfect years, Jack and Kelly were delivered horrible news. Kelly had Iverson's Disease.
The debilitating disease ravaged Kelly... Jack remained strong and desperately searched for clues to help her fight this incurable disease. Jack spent any free-time that he was not caring for his wife buried in medical journals and research databases to no avail.
2375 was a terrible year, Kelly lost her battle on December 12th, 2375. Earlier in the year, both of Jack's younger twin brothers, Kyle and Samuel were killed during the Dominion Wars when their respective Starfleet cruisers were destroyed. Jonah was killed on December 24th, 2375 in a freak (atmospheric) aircraft crash on his way to spend the holidays with the King family. His mother Giselle, couldn't handle the loss of three of her boys and her daughter-in-law, Kelly. Somewhat surprisingly, Giselle had felt Kelly was her long-lost daughter that she never had. But grief is not what caused her death on January 5th, 2376. The official autopsy revealed that Giselle died of internal bleeding with a ruptured aneurism.
Jack wanted to discover a cure for Iverson's Disease and explored career options in both general science research and the medical field. The more he learned and understood of human physiology, the more he realized how perfect a system the body was and felt that his understanding of systems engineering would translate well into the medical field which would let him help others.
[edit] Starfleet Career
Jack was 36 years old when he took the Starfleet Academy Entrance Examination. He passed and began his Academy Medical education. He was the Old Man compared to the median age of the cadets. He was a very good student and leveraged his engineering background to perform in the top 20%. He could have easily been in the top 10% of the class if he had not devoted a significant portion of his time as a research assistant with the Iverson's Disease research team.
Jack's residency term on Starbase 12 was relatively uneventful however very busy. He was not able to dedicate as much time as he wished for medical research. He was beginning to enjoy the 'care' side more than the 'research' side.
The internship years on the USS Gibraltar and the USS Apollo further pushed Jack's satisfaction with the care side of being a doctor and as a result he is no longer 'obsessed' with finding a cure for Iverson's Disease. He is still actively conducting research, but not with the original intensity or passion. The timing and need worked out such that Jack's first assignment was with the USS Apollo. He has recently been reassigned to the USS Bismarck.
