Jim is a former Executive Officer of the USS Hyperion (NCC-7438-F).
[edit] BACKGROUND
Completed basic schooling at Parklands Anglican School in Australia, Earth in 2356.
Studied Bachelor of Science majoring in Quantum Mechanics and Nanochemistry, graduating in 2359 with Second Class Honours.
Completed a Masters degree in Quantum Singularity and String Theory in 2361 Taught at Starfleet Academy as an honorary Admiral from 2361 to 2363, while undertaking a PhD project at the Sarek Institute.
After deciding to switch from a life in the academic circles, Roys undertook Starfleet officer training. Receiving credit for the first year of Starfleet Academy, he entered as a 2nd Year Cadet in , in the Science Officer Program. Jim Roys had an uneventful childhood in Australia, where his parents took him travelling on a regular basis. From an early age, he had an interest in etymology and geology, and when he was old enough to manipulate a test tube, he discovered a passion for chemistry. An inquisitive mind fueled Roys's passion for mathematics, and he finished school with the Calculus and Advanced Mathematics medallion.
Roys achieved good grades in university studying a Bachelor of Science, however lacked the focus required during his Honours year, so missed out on First Class honours. Roys learned from his mistake, and this made him far more dedicated for his Masters and PhD studies.
Part way through his PhD, Roys decided that an academic life was not for him. He applied for Starfleet Academy, and was accepted in 2363.
The loss of the Devanchya occured during the end of the S'f'niki war, after the Borg and the S'f'niki formed an alliance. The Devanchya was rushed to be prepared to defend an outpost along the Romulan Neutral Zone as a sign of goodwill to the Romulans. They were not expecting an engagement, however a Starfleet battleship presence was deemed desirable. However, since time was of the essence, the senior staff including Captain Appleton, Cmdr Roys, and Lt Cmdr Loihi, in consultation with Cmdr McLairen (Chief Engineer) agreed to forego safety checks as prescribed under Starfleet Normal Operating Procedures. This caused them to overlook the Dilithium supply, worsened by the fact that a particularly impure batch had just been released from one of the major dilithium mines.
The Devanchya engaged the S'f'niki/Borg approximately an hour after arriving at the Neutral Zone. Taking advantage of Multivector Assault Mode (the Devanchya was a Promethius class vessel) non-essential personnel were evacuated to Sections B and C, under the watch of slightly more junior command officers. The senior staff (since in this tough battle experience was absolutely paramount, which all concurred) took command of the Alpha section, and headed to engage the enemy. Sections B and C formed backup positions to assist if required. The Senior Staff thought their gamble had paid off, when after an intense period of fighting, they had crippled or destroyed many enemy ships (made easier by the fact that the Borg retreated early on due to an alleged difficulty in their subspace transponder network) and the Federation are technologically superior to the S'f'niki, however Alpha section sustained heavy damage, and had to limp back to Starbase 174.
Section Bravo was destroyed as it attempted to disable a Borg ship sneaking up on Section Alpha. It was lost with all hands. Since Sections A and C are not able to reconnect, they returned to Starbase 174 under their own power. However, the impure dilithium (which would have easily been noticed by routine scans if time was available) destabilised in both ships. The skill of Cmdr McLairen saved the Section Alpha, however Section Charlie succombed to a nasty warp core breach, and once again, all hands were lost. There were 8 survivors from a battle crew of 200.
In the ensuing court martial, the JAG was a professional enemy of Cmdr Loihi, who had worked in law enforcement before joining Starfleet. In a move that was very personal, the JAG was scathing on the officers for their carelessness, incompetence, and absolute disregard for standard operating procedures. The fact he had a grudge against Cmdr Chuck Loihi did not help at all. It was seen as extremely draconian by many in the legal field (25 people observing the court martial were subsequently tried for contempt after the verdicts and punishments were handed down) when all the surviving officers were demoted to Ensign. Loihi was bitter and apologetic, feeling guilty that a grudge the JAG had against him had possibly impacted his second family. Some of the 8, once including Jim, held varying amounts of blame. Jim, Loihi and Appleton have reconciled, however McLairen has not, neither has Riis.
Appeals were lodged, however the JAG office of Sector 174 seemed to be of the proverbial "Boy's club" configuration, and no JAG was willing to overturn the decision. The 8 were tried for manslaughter on Earth and found not guilty, on the grounds that it was not reasonably forseeable that by not checking the dilithium, a warp core breach could be caused - the dilithium should have already been checked for impurities by the technician who replaced the crystals. This story caused a scandal throughout the United Federation of Planets, who saw it as a win for the lawyers and bureaucrats by twisting facts, and manipulating the truth to win the case. However, the charges were not upheld.
After the loss of the USS Devanchya, Roys took a year of leave after he was certified temporarily psychologically unfit for duty. During this time, he conducted a science museum on the Moon, and underwent extensive psychological and psychiatric treatment. Looking for a change in career, and knowing that Starfleet would never immediately reinstate him in a command position, Roys undertook a Graduate Medical Program in 2375. While not the top of his class, Roys managed to receive First Class Honours this time.
His residency was a little troubled, due to some remaining issues after the Devanchya incident, and a form of 'burn out' from working so hard at Medical School, however Roys was never afraid to ask for help when he needed it. Roys turned out to be a gifted Physician, and skilled surgeon, leading to him undertaking the beginnings of surgical training. As a result, Starfleet allowed him the rank of Ensign, and gave him approval to seek out a permanent assignment.
Both Isabelle and Danika lived with Jim on the USS Devanchya, and Isabelle also on the Xidex. (Danika was delivered by Cmdr Tapek Riis during a battle with the S'f'niki). They were spared from the Devanchya's destruction, since for the last mission, only a battle crew was required. Isabelle and Danika took a holiday holiday with Jim's father in law on Risa. After Roys's demotion, they lived together in Adelaide, Australia, in a 19th century vintage cottage in the Barossa Valley. They were Jim's biggest support network. The Roys family hopes to live on whatever ship Jim serves on, as they are a very close-knit group. Serving on a Starship, often light years away from his family, Jim formed a very close bond with the Hyperion’s Chief Conn Officer and Second Officer, Commander Tom Waterford. They both heralded from the same “corner” of the globe, with Tom being a New Zealander. They formed a reputation on the Hyperion as almost being inseparable. They often enjoy a quiet beer in the ship’s lounge, and on the odd occasion, a few more (albeit less quiet).
Their relationship was once tested when Jim declared a shuttle carrying Tom’s fiancée, Sara Mitchell, to be quarantined. Tom blamed Jim for putting her life in danger, and was very bitter. She had an anaphylactic reaction to the experimental antidote that Jim developed (with Sara’s and the Chief Science Officer’s help) and nearly died. However, they patched up their differences afterwards, and there were no long term effects on their friendship.
Jim Roys also formed a close bond to Regulator Umol and Minister Releem of R’Dan during the Hyperion’s two missions there. When Umol was assassinated in 2383, Jim attended his funeral.
In 2384, Jim's morality was tested to the limits when the Hyperion discovered a new sentient life form - a group of Nanoprobes that took residence in Atlantis Station's computer core, and were transferred to the Hyperion. After the tiny beings wrecked havoc with the Hyperion's essential systems, the crew of the Hyperion discovered that they were ancestors of the Borg. When the nanites expressed interest in learning about their ferocious relatives, the crew were split. Jim remained an advocate of Starfleet's primary goal - seeking out new life and new civilisations. Using his understanding of Borg Nanoprobe technology, he was instrumental in nurturing the creatures, and encouraging them to create a peaceful society.
Later that year, Jim was a part of the discovery of a group of Humans who left Earth with the lost city of Atlantis. During this mission he discovered that Isabelle was pregnant with their second child.
Upon returning to Earth with the Atlanteans, Jim was promoted to the Second Officer of the Hyperion. He was also asked to be Tom Waterford's Best Man - a duty he took as seriously as his obligations to his Ship. After the New Zealand wedding, Jim took the Hyperion out of the Solar System while Tom and Sara Waterford took his Runabout on their honeymoon. A subspace anomaly created a temporal causality loop, broken only by the savvy science of Sarah Waterford, and some warped temporal mechanics.
Jim's personal and professional life took an upgrade. He became a father once more, and was promoted to Acting Executive Officer of the Hyperion. At this time, he learned that his new son, Alex James's Godfather, Tom Waterford, had been promoted to Acting Commanding Officer. This brought a whole new level of meaning, responsibility, and duty to the man now in his mid-40s.
From time to time, Jim makes controversial decisions involving ethics and morality. When a face-off between the Hyperion and Species 8472 looked inevitable, he refused to involve the Medical Department in the hunt for a weapon. He ordered his staff to not undertake any research into the physiology of Species 8472 unless it was for the purpose of healing. In their next mission, he refused to allow the use of Transporters on R’Dan, in accordance with their religious beliefs. This decision nearly resulted in the death of Sherry Tiqek, the Chief Nurse.
However controversial his ethical decisions may be, most of his crewmates respect Jim Roys’s respect for life, truth, and morality. He always endeavours to practice medicine according to an old, but still essential adage: First, do no harm.
