John van Wilder

A bad-boy former smuggler, John spent 5 years in a penal camp before being given the option to restart his Starfleet career. He is now the Chief Conn Officer on the Luna-class USS Oberon (NCC-80111).

[edit] BACKGROUND

Youth
John was born on a remote federation colony which consisted of mainly Dutch settlers as the only son of Ralf and Sophie van Wilder. The first 10 years of his life John had a normal child hood, but even then it was obvious John wanted to fly more then anything else.

Adolescence
After a dispute with the Orion syndicate the Federation 'lost' the Ragnar solar system to the Orion Syndicate due to an 'agreement' After This is the sh!t hits the fan. Under the Orion rule the settlement slowly slipped down to a become a smugglers refuge. On 1 night a group of drunk smugglers forced their way into the Van Wilders families house. John's father wanted them to leave and tried to do so forcibly, but the smugglers killed John's father and mother and took John with them to be their slave. On the Orion smuggler ship John was used to 'clean' the ship, but it soon became obvious that he had a knack for flying, which he learned from Shon'a, the female pilot of the ship. Which coincidentally also became his first romantic interest, but she had so many bed fellows that John believed this was a normal way of life.

1st starfleet career
After a couple of years John's ship was captured by federation forces, but due to Shon'a her statemant that John was indeed their slave, John was allowed to enter Starfleet to become a pilot. Although John was one of the best pilots the academy had ever seen, there was one thing that he lacked, the capability to take orders. Even with that drawback, he was given a position on the USS Primus as an ensign. After a couple of years John reached the rank of lieutenant and was assistant Chief CONN Officer. After the ship was destroyed on the battle of Wolf 359 by the Borg, John lost all his friends and his John also lost his only true love and fiancée. Being the sole survivor capable to reach an escape pod in time John was never able to coop that he lost what was for him his entire family. John then quit Starfleet and became the only thing he could be: a smuggler.

In his 20's
After a couple of years John walked into a trap setup by the federation to stop smuggling between the Federation and Orion border. John lost his arm during that raid due to a faulty sonic grenade. John was sentenced to 15 years of labor on New Zealand penal camp.

In his 30's
After 5 years John's case got reevaluated for good behavior and he was given a choice, to sit out the remaining 10 years or to restart a new career in Starfleet as an ensign. John accepted the latter.

John is in good health/Bionic arm works 100%. John does have a problem bonding and getting a permanent relationship, this is due to the hostile environment John grew up in. But despite of that character flaw, he is fit for duty.
