[edit] BACKGROUND

Jonathan Boyd was born in Seattle, Washington on February 18, 2353 to Peter and Susan Boyd. The third of three children, Jonathan was considered the baby of the family and was often treated as such even into his adulthood. Peter Boyd Senior was a Starfleet Ambassador while his wife was a civilian Doctor working as a Surgeon at Seattle’s Northwest Hospital and Medical Centre. Peter Boyd Junior was 18 years old when his younger brother was born and a 1st Year Cadet at Starfleet Academy while his older sister, Jacqueline was 15 and planning to follow her mother into medicine.

Growing up, Jonathan idolized his older brother. He saw Peter going off, exploring the Galaxy as a Starfleet Officer. On several occasions as a young boy, Jonathan remembers visiting Pete on the ships he served on. These visits only intensified his desire to join Starfleet when he was older.

When his father was assigned as the Federation’s Ambassador to Qo’noS in 2358, the family was split for a majority of the time. Jonathan remained on Earth with his mother and sister while his father was on Qo’noS. During the summer breaks, Jonathan spent the time with his father on the Klingon Homeworld. Peter introduced his son to the Klingon people, their culture and their food. When he was older, Jonathan spent these summer breaks learning Mok’bara, the Klingon Martial Art, and learned how to properly use Klingon weapons in combat.

During the school terms, Jonathan involved himself in sports and active pursuits. In high school he took part in basketball and baseball teams. He also spent a couple of afternoons a week swimming and running. It wasn’t until he entered Starfleet in 2369 that he began mountain biking and hiking. These activities were taken up because of a girl he liked. Despite the relationship lasting for all of six weeks, Jon continued to take hiking and mountain biking trips during spring break and whenever he got some leave.

Jonathan began his basic training at Starfleet’s Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois in 2369. He spent the next 8 weeks undergoing an intensive physical training schedule as well as class work designed to prepare him to join the fleet. Because of his active lifestyle and the time he spent amongst the Klingons, Crewman Recruit Boyd was able to easily adapt to a more regimented way of life.

Upon completing basic training, Jonathan continued onto the Apprentice School that would provide him with the knowledge he would require for his chosen career path within Starfleet. As a boy, Jon had always been technical minded and enjoyed working with computers. In his teenage years he had become the ‘go to’ guy among his family and friends whenever they had a technical problem of some time. It seemed only natural that he would put these skills to use as a Starfleet engineer. The 8 weeks of the engineering ‘A’ School provided him with a firm grounding in the principles of engineering, particularly in the field of warp propulsion. When his time there was completed, Crewman Apprentice Boyd was assigned to Starbase 12, where he would work as an engineer while continuing to learn his trade.

Crewman Apprentice Boyd spent the next 11 months on Starbase 12, learning everything he could from the more senior enlisted engineers there. He also took the opportunity to pick up some extra time on the phaser range. He eventually earned the Basic Qualification on the Type-III phaser rifle and the advanced qualification on the Type-II phaser. The Borg attack 2 years earlier was still fresh on everybody’s mind and more personnel than ever were earning the advanced qualification.

In late 2370 Jonathan was promoted to the rate of Crewman and transferred to the Excelsior-class U.S.S. Gorkon NCC-40512. This assignment allowed Jon to work with a starship’s warp core for the first time in his career. During his engineering training, warp propulsion had made up a large part of his focus. His year on the Gorkon allowed him to put this training to good use. This assignment also allowed him to continue to learn, in a more hands on manner, the ins and outs of a starship’s propulsion systems.

Mid-2371 saw Crewman Boyd transferred to the Ambassador-class U.S.S. Endeavour NCC-71805. There he had his first encounters with non-Federation, non-Klingon technology. Specifically he was on an away team that was sent to a damaged Romulan vessel that had drifted across the Neutral Zone. Jonathan was practically Giddy at the idea of getting to see a Romulan engine core first hand. He knew that instead of the Matter/Antimatter systems used by many of the Quadrant’s space faring peoples, the Romulans used an artificial quantum singularity. When he had the chance, Jonathan made detailed scans of the engine design and poured over them in his free time. As one of the few officers to have seen a Romulan engine core up close, Crewman Boyd would eventually become one of the Federation’s foremost experts on them.

In 2372 Jonathan was promoted to Petty Officer 3rd Class and became a Warp Engine Specialist on the Endeavour. This year also saw the outbreak of hostilities with the Klingon Empire. The Endeavour was one of the vessels on the frontlines of that conflict. Jonathan’s father had been exiled from Qo’noS along with the other Federation diplomats and actively called for a return to the negotiating table. Petty Officer Boyd was sad to see the two powers return to conflict but his time amongst the Klingons during his adolescence helped him greatly. The Endeavour’s Chief Engineer assigned Jon extra duties, namely training the enlisted personnel in hand-to-hand combat. Jonathan knew that none of them would be able to defeat a Klingon Warrior but he hoped to be able to impart enough knowledge that would save their lives.

Petty Officer Boyd transferred to the Nebula-class U.S.S. Farragut NCC-60597 in 2373, once again serving as a Warp Engine Specialist with additional duties training his fellow engineers in hand-to-hand combat. His assignment on the Farragut did not last long. Three months after his transfer, the Farragut was destroyed in a skirmish with the Klingons as she rushed to assist the colonists on Ajilon Prime when the planet fell under attack from Klingon forces.

The war with the Klingons ended not long after as the Dominion became and ever growing and looming threat. Petty Officer Boyd’s next assignment was to the Excelsior-class U.S.S. Frederickson NCC-42111, despite the young engineer’s hope that he be assigned to a Galaxy or Akira-class vessel. However, Starfleet felt that his familiarity with the warp engines of the Excelsior-class was required on the Frederickson. His time on the Frederickson was also short. The only action she saw was at the beginning of the Dominion War. Soon after the capture of Deep Space Nine by Dominion forces, the Frederickson was assigned to a fleet that would attack Dominion shipyards on Torros III. She sustained heavy damage and spent much of the next few months back at Utopia Planitia, having been towed there.

Starfleet quickly reassigned much of the Frederickson’s crew during this period, Jonathan included. Following the attack on Torros III, Jonathan was promoted to the rate of Petty Officer 2nd Class and transferred to the Galaxy-class U.S.S. Venture NCC-71854. The Venture was one of the vessels at the forefront of Starfleet’s war efforts. She was involved in every major engagement of the war and Jonathan lost his fare share of friends. During the battle to retake Deep Space Nine, dubbed ‘Operation Return’, Petty Officer Boyd took a piece of shrapnel to the stomach. Luckily it did not penetrate his abdomen too far but he still retains the scar from that injury.

Jonathan saw many of his friends die during the War. Not a family in the Federation was untouched by the war in one-way or another. Every week there was another list of casualties and not a week went by that a name that Jonathan recognised wasn’t on it. Many times there were two or three if not more. People he’d served with since joining Starfleet, friends he’d went through basic training with, people he’d known since childhood. As the weeks went by, Jonathan began to realise that the odds of his surviving the war were not in his favour. However, he did not dwell on it. He simply got on with his work.

Following the Federation Alliance’s successful attack on the Chin’toka system, Petty Officer Boyd was transferred to the U.S.S. Galaxy NCC-70637. Jonathan served out the rest of the war on the Galaxy as she took part in major engagements like the Liberation of Betazed and Battle of Cardassia, the final battle of the war, and minor skirmishes with Dominion and Cardassian vessels. The two years the Federation Alliance was at war were difficult for everyone but Jonathan also saw them as a learning experience. The engineers in particular became more adept at working under extreme conditions.

When the war was over, Jonathan assumed that he would continue serving on the Galaxy or perhaps be assigned to a different ship. However, the Galaxy’s Chief Engineer, who had become impressed with the Petty Officer’s leadership of the more junior enlisted personnel during the war, counselled him on a career as a commissioned officer. It wasn’t something that Jonathan had thought about, preferring to focus on being an engineer, not a leader but it was a chance for career advancement that he wasn’t about to turn down. Jon reported to Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island to begin his officer training.

The 12 weeks he spent at OCS were designed to introduce Jonathan to concepts of leadership and command. He found the work challenging and enjoyed the chance to spend more than a few weeks on Earth. Weekends were spent at the family home in Seattle with his now retired father and his mother, who had since set up a small family practice. He graduated from OCS in early 2377 and was promoted to the rank of Ensign.

His first assignment was to the Akira-class U.S.S. Rabin NCC-63293 as the head of her Propulsion Section. In this role, Ensign Boyd was responsible for a handful of enlisted engineers and was charged with the maintenance of the warp and impulse engines. His years as a warp engine specialist were invaluable and he found that his hands on approach to the work was appreciated by the engineers under him. Most of the other engineering section heads kept a distance from the engineers in their section. Jonathan, having spent his entire career until that point in the enlisted ranks, became close to those engineers. This led to his section becoming the most efficient on the Rabin. In 2379 he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade and to the position of Assistant Chief Engineer.

In 2382, Jonathan was promoted to full Lieutenant and transferred to the Intrepid-class U.S.S. Galahad NCC-74630. The Galahad saw little action over the next few years, staying close to the core worlds of the Federation. This suited Jonathan down to the ground who had seen enough combat to last him a life time. By 2384 Jonathan had sufficiently impressed the Galahad’s Commanding Officer that she made him Second Officer and assigned him a command shift on the Bridge. At the same time he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander. This would prove to be yet another step on Jonathan’s path to command. In 2385, he was approached by Captain von Kleve, who had recently been assigned command of the U.S.S. Pegasus, and offered the position of Executive Officer. Jonathan accepted and transferred to the Pegasus soon after.

Lieutenant Commander Boyd was in Command of the Pegasus when she was destroyed by the Cardassians. As a result he faced a board of inquiry. The board cleared him of any wrongdoing in the Pegasus destruction and the Commander decided to go on the inactive reserve list to spend more time with the son he'd only recently found out about.
