Lieutenant Commander Joshua Miller was a Doctor and Head Surgeon aboard the USS Bismarck. Previously, he was the Bismarck's Chief Medical Officer.
[edit] BACKGROUND
Joshua Miller was born at 0311 on April 1, 2360 to Julie and Luke Miller. At the time Julie worked at her father's family medical practice in San Francisco while Luke was a Starfleet Lieutenant working at Starfleet Medical. Josh was their third child; the couple already had a 12 year old son named Cameron and a daughter aged 10 named Karen. In the months following Josh's birth, Luke Miller resigned from Starfleet and joined his wife at the Truman Family Practice.
The Miller's were a very close family. Julie and Luke were able to spend a lot of time with their children thanks to the family friendly hours at the clinic and Cameron and Karen always had time for their little brother. Even when she started high school and started dating, Karen still made time for her younger brother while Cameron acted as his younger siblings protector. It was Cameron who taught him to ride a bike and play basketball, Karen was the one who influenced his love of swimming. When Josh reached the age of 6, the family started going on hiking holidays around Earth. The young Joshua Miller didn't really enjoy these vacations but as he got older, he began to really enjoy them. The idea of getting back to nature, away from the 24th Century technologies appealed to him. His parents encouraged several sides to the young boy's personality from an early age. On the one hand they encouraged him to be active and to get out there and play sports with his friends while on the other they encouraged his creative side, by allowing him to take guitar lessons.
During one family vacation to Hawaii, Luke took his son out into the water and taught the young man to surf. From then on the family took a vacation during Spring Break to Hawaii where Josh spent most of his time surfing. His father also taught him to play baseball in a park near their house. When he reached high school, Josh joined the schools teams for both these sports. At the Academy he decided not to join the Baseball team and instead tried out for the Water Polo team.
When Josh applied to the Academy at the age of 16, he expected to get turned down and told to reapply when he reached the age of 18 in 2 years. However, the Dominion War had taken it's toll in terms of personnel and recruiting and by this time Starfleet was badly in need of new officers so he was accepted despite his relatively young age and began classes in the fall of 2376.
Doctor Miller's Starfleet career began in the fall of 2376 when he began classes at Starfleet Academy. He found the first year difficult because it was the transition phase for cadets moving from civilian into military life. However, following the winter break he seemed much more at ease with military life and his grades improved. Thanks to growing up around his mother's medical practice, Josh already had a decent grounding in medical knowledge, which served him well as he moved into his second year, the first of med school.
Cadet Miller's grades were high during the first two years of medical school, the pre-clinical phase of his training. The first phase of med school took place entirely in the classrooms and lab work and Josh excelled in his anatomy and physiology classes so much so that he was asked to tutor those cadets currently failing the classes. Joshua seemed to befriend most of the cadets he tutored and not one of those cadets failed their classes.
In the third year, Josh began the clinical phase of med school. The next two years focused on the medical cadets working in hospital wards at Starfleet Medical where they observed the work that Doctors were doing and took part in patient care. The first year saw Josh complete his internal medicine, pediatrics and neurology rotations. He particularly enjoyed the internal medicine rotation and while he loved kids, Josh knew that he didn't want to focus on pediatric medicine. His evaluation on the neurology rotation was above average while the evaluations he achieved on the other two rotations were among the best in the class. Of particular mention was Cadet Miller's bedside manner. His supervising attending noted that Joshua struck up a relationship with his patients and put them at ease.
It was in the fourth year of his medical training that Josh found his true calling. The three rotations that Cadet Miller found himself on in his final year were family medicine, OB/GYN and surgery. It was the latter of the three rotations that Josh loved. He found the first two fascinating but it was during his surgery rotation that he'd found his calling. From then on all Josh wanted to do was to become Chief of Surgery somewhere.
Joshua Miller graduated from the Academy in the summer of 2381 and was promoted to Ensign. This, however, was not the end of his medical training. For the next two years Josh spent his residency onboard the Olympic-class USS Nobel, continuing to learn from the Attendings assigned there. Like most Doctors, Josh found the death of a patient difficult, especially since he preferred to build a relationship with them and it is something he still struggles.
Upon the completion of his two-year residency, Josh was promoted to Lieutenant j.g. and assigned to the Intrepid-class USS Oxford as a surgeon. Josh excelled on the Oxford and volunteered regularly for extra shifts in Sickbay. This allowed the young Lieutenant to build his skills outside of the operating room and to specialize in internal medicine and surgery. So, when the Assistant Chief Medical Officer position opened up on the USS Kitty Hawk Josh's name was the first one on the list.
Josh accepted the position and transferred to the Defiant-class vessel a week later. The young Doctor continued to double up as an internist and a surgeon, though his surgical skills were not required as often. Due to the lack of proper medical facilities, most major surgical patients were transferred over to one of the larger vessels in the Task Group.
Joshua once again showed himself to be a capable Doctor and a decent administrator in the role of Assistant Chief Medical Officer. After a year on the Kitty Hawk, the position of Chief Medical Officer opened up on the Bismarck, Task Group Alpha's Flagship. Lieutenant J.G. Miller was promoted to Lieutenant and received new orders to report aboard the Sovereign-class vessel as her new CMO.
In mid-2375 the Bismarck was dispatched to Aresanoba II to investigate a large explosion on the planet. The planet was a joint Federation/Cardassian location and terrorists were suspected of being behind it. The medical staff was tasked with re-doing the autopsies and checking to see if there was something the planets pathologists missed. While the Bismarck was in orbit, another explosion rocked the planet, injuring several Starfleet personnel in the process. Doctor Miller was one of the first medical officers on the scene. For his actions during the mission, Lieutenant Miller was awarded the Decoration of Gallantry.
The Bismarck's next mission was to investigate a distresss call recieved from the U.S.S. Bermuda, a Constellation-class starship thought destroyed 50 years ago. An investigation uncovered the fact that the Bermuda's crew had been killed by a parasite that caused hallucinations. The medical staff soon discovered that Betazoids were more resistant to the parasite and set about reseaching why. They soon discovered that a neurotransmitter that played a part in the Betazoid telepathic ability was responsible and that it could be used to fight off the parasite. A synthetic version was created and administered to the crew, thereby preventing the Bismarck's crew from meeting the same fate as the crew on the Bermuda. Following the mission Doctor Miller was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and awarded the Conspicuous Merit Cross.
