Sergeant Julian J. Raiden is a veteran Marine, trained as a Sniper and Medic, but shifted into a Command role via dead man's boots during the Dominion War. He is from a family with a strong history of Starfleet service that stretches back several generations. However, he is considered by the family at large - and himself, at times - to be the lesser of two brothers; his elder sibling Alex usually achieves the majority of the noteworthy milestones over the course of their lives.
[edit] BACKGROUND
The younger son of Marcus T. Raiden, Julian was born and raised aboard the USS Galacta, which his father commanded. Lacking the focus and discipline of his elder brother, Julian always felt that his lack of success was a constant disappointment to his father; resigning to that, he gave up trying to do otherwise, and spent most of his youth as a rebel. In the hopes of instilling a little respect and discipline in his son, Marcus arranged for Julian to go through a crash course with the ship's detatchment of Marines: surprisingly, Julian was inspired by the ordeal, and ultimaltely chose to enlist, leaving the Galacta to train at Fort Tranquility on Luna.
The instructors soon beat Julian into shape, and while he still retained a maverick streak, he managed to find activities at which he could focus and excel. He went on to specialise as a Sniper as well as a Field Medic, and progressed directly from training into combat in the Dominion War. He joined the crew of the USS Atlantis, serving in the 1 (Pathfinders) Platoon; proving himself numerous times in combat, and ultimately became one of the senior NCOs in the unit.
Later, he transferred to the USS Apollo, serving as a Sergeant in the Marine Platoon aboard. Involved in numerous actions during the aftermath of the Dominion War, his distinguished service eventually caught the eye of Special Operations recruiters. He was offered the opportunity to work with Starfleet Tactical as part of a counter-terrorism and counter-piracy unit in the wake of the Dominion War, which he ultimately accepted.
Returning to mainstream service, Raiden was at one point intended to join the Marine Contingent being assigned to the new Sigma Librae Outpost. However, when a vacancy became available on one of the vessels exploring the Hurucan Sector - the USS Cambrian - Raiden applied to serve as her Platoon Sergeant, and was accepted. The assignment was short lived however: a year later, former teammate Atven Dantarno called in a favour, and Raiden transferred to bolster the diminished Marine compliment aboard the USS Pegasus.
