Commander Katerina Tarasovna Voronkova is a long-serving Science Officer in Starfleet, and the current Commanding Officer of the USS Orion (NCC-76303). Her career has seen long periods working with Research and Development out of their facility on Starbase 51, save for a hiatus during the Dominion War to serve on a more front-line assignment.
[edit] BACKGROUND
Katerina was born in Presnensky District of western Moskow, the daughter of Taras Voronkov - a veteran of the Starfleet Strategic Infantry that predated the modern Starfleet Marine Corps. One in a long line of proud Russian soldiers, Taras had always hoped for his sons to follow his footsteps and join Starfleet, but after a dispute following the death of his wife (Angelina Voronkova) drove away his only son - Marcus Voronkov - the Marine directed his attention on his daughter, viewing her as the last hope to preserve his family tradition.
After the death of her mother, Katerina and her father grew closer, but their relationship was not the usual one that would be expected between a young girl and her father. While Voronkov did his best to support his little Katia in all her pursuits, he also treated her as a second son: encouraging her desires to become involved in more male-dominated sports and hobbies, all the while grooming her to eventually become a General Veronkova as well. To say that Veronkov was crushed when Katia decided to enter Starfleet - as a Science Officer - would be an understatement, but after loosing a child already to his obsession with tradition he finally decided to let Katia live her life the way she chose.
Katie joined Starfleet during the tail end of the peak hostilities between the Cardassians and the Federation, at a time when Starfleet was finally able to start shifting its support and resources back towards its primary mission of exploration. She graduated high - although not top - in her class at Starfleet Academy, and accepted a position at the Starfleet Science Institute on Earth, working towards a post-graduate Doctorate.
Her project initially began with a general investigation into Subspace Physics, eventually coming to focus on Warp Theory, and the principle of negative effects being exerted upon spacetime by continued travel at high warp velocities. Though the thesis was accepted by Starfleet and Voronkova was granted her Doctorate, Starfleet refused to provide funding to determine a solution, until the the Hekarans independently confirmed a the theory after a warp core breach in a region of subspace instability known as the Hekaras Corridor.Ensign Voronkova was eventually assigned to one of Starfleet's new Galaxy-class vessels: the USS Atlantis. Initially a member of the Stellar Cartography department, she later shifted to a different research team, joining the Theoretical Physics department. She proved to be extremely capable in several areas of science beyond just simple Astrophysics, and despite several serious disagreements with fellow Astrophysicist Alexander Beckett over her tenure on the ship, she was eventually appointed head of Theoretical Physics in 2368 with a promotion to Lieutenant: something that Beckett continues to hold against her.
Her new position didn't last long however: a few months after taking charge of the department she was offered a placement at the prestigious Research and Development Facility located at Starbase 51. At '51 Katie was in her element, working on a variety of projects that allowed her to stretch her intellectual muscles, particularly in more applied and technical areas that she had not previously had much involvement in. After the incident in the Hekaras Corridor, Katie was part of the team developing possible countermeasures for the negative effects of high-speed Warp travel, and was partly responsible for contributing to the design of the new variable geometry warp nacelles on the Intrepid-class, and the more subspace-friendly nacelles of the Sovereign-class which were adapted and implemented across the fleet. She also had the opportunity to work on the Research and Development of the Compression Phaser Rifle, which was brought into use by Starfleet during her tenure at Starbase 51.
When the Dominion War broke out, the workload at Starbase 51 increased, and yet Katie found herself wanting to be somewhere else. The moral code that her father had instilled in her told her that the Federation needed her, and despite the greater good she could do working for R&D, that didn't feel like the best she could do. Though her superiors tried to convince her otherwise, Katie requested a transfer to the USS Korolev, a ship stationed nearby that was being redirected towards the front lines, and joined her crew as an Operations Officer. Her exploits during the Dominion War seem trivial on paper, but on a personal level meant a great deal, finally being able to fulfil her father's wishes by becoming a soldier. Her most vivid taste of battle came during the last year of the war, when her ship was assigned to help capture the communications relay at AR-558. After an extensive battle that raged across the entire system, Katie was part of the away team that beamed down to relieve Captain Sisko, and went on to assist in the efforts to crack the relay's encryption and gain access to the Dominion communications network.
The Dominion War ended, and Lieutenant Voronkova was offered a position at Starbase 51 again. However, she turned it down, instead accepting the position of Operations Officer aboard the Korolev - which she insists on referring to by its proper Russian transliteration, Korolyov - later being promoted to Lieutenant Commander. The Korolev was involved initially in the Peacekeeping efforts within the Cardassian Union in the months after the Dominion War; she was at one point offered a position with a team of Federation scientists involved in the botanical renewal of Cardassia Prime, but declined the position in order to remain aboard the Korolev.
Eventually however, the draw of other postings became too strong, and after Starbase 51 offered to give Voronkova her own research department she found it impossible to refuse, leaving the Korolev in 2378 with a distinguished service citation placed in her personnel file.
As a Lieutenant Commander - and later Commander - at Starbase 51, Voronkova had the pick of the research projects that were available at the Research and Development facility, and quite often stepped well beyond her boundaries as an Astrophysics specialist, using her experiences aboard the Korolev to justify her involvement in more Engineering-based projects. At one point she was involved in the development of a new type of Shuttlecraft, and at another point helped with the development of a Starfleet equivalent of the Energy Dampening Weapon used by the Breen. After a few months spent overseeing a project investigating the possible applications of Disruptor technology (rather than Phaser technology) in future Starfleet weapons, Katie was invited to speak at a science symposium being hosted on Earth, and attended by representatives from several major powers in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. While on Earth, she was approached by Starfleet Command and offered a position as Executive Officer aboard a new Nebula-class Starship that was in the final stages of construction at Utopia Planetia. Katie accepted, and took charge of the vessel early in 2384, commanding the ship until its rendezvous with her newly-appointed Captain at Outpost K-7. Upon arrival, the ship was recommissioned as per a Special Order from Starfleet Operations, becoming the USS Cambrian (NCC-74986-A).
Voronkova remained with the Cambrian for a short time, until circumstances conspired to force her to leave. Temporarily assigned to command the damaged USS Orion, she ultimately found herself promoted to permenant command towards the end of 2384.
