The former Commander of the USS Ark Royal IX, Laura took over command of the Luna-class USS Oberon (NCC-80111) from her sister Commander Stacey Simms
[edit] BACKGROUND
Laura and her twin sister Stacy were born in a small village in the south of England. Their parents were both Career Starfleet officers, with their mother working at Starfleet command as a junior secretary, and their father the dean of the Starfleet Marine Corps enlisted academy.
The girls attended the Heath school for girls, a local boarding school that allowed them to live at home due to their house being two hundered meters from the school gate. They also however spend a lot of time in San Fransico, especially during the holidays generally getting in the way at Starfleet Command.
During their second to year at school they all took an academy pre-qualification course followed by an academy entrance exam, Stacy and Laura were two of only thirteen girls in their year to be selected to skip their final year and join the academy at seventeen instead of eighteen. In a not entirely sober fit of celebration Stacy and Laura ended up having identical star tattoo's Stacy's next to her left eye Laura's next to her right. The twins started the academy a few months later, Stacy opting for security while Laura tool Advanced Engineering and Piloting.
The academy went well for the two, with only a mild hicup in their second year when their father was killed in a training accident. After a two weak leave of absence from the Academy Laura and her sister returned, Laura now determined to do her best and make her father proud.
From then onwards their grades rose, Laura's slightly more than Stacy who was called to the commandants office more than once for bad behaviour. Both however managed to graduate in the top half of their year and recieved their first posting to the USS Edison.
Their first mission was rough for the Edison, and Laura was put under a lot of pressure having to take the lead of her engineering team when her teams leader was injured, however she excelled and was given her own team shortly after the mission, her sister also excelled, so much that she was transfered away and nobody could find out where to or why. It wasn't until twelve months later when Laura was transfered to the USS Ark Royal IX as Chief Engineer did she learn her sister had been recruited by the Special Operations brance of Starfleet Intelligence.
Being Chief Engineer aboard the flag ship of Special Operations was an unusual experience, and a lot of the time the crew didn't know where they were going or why, they often met up with random ships and several times Laura was called to repair alien ships or Starfleet shuttles apparently operating in the middle of nowhere, though she rarely got to see the crew.
She did at least get to see her sister. Every so often when the Ark Royal stopped by it's base of operations, Starbase 21, she would get to see her sister.
After two years on the Ark Royal Laura recieved her promotion to Commander and moved up to the Executive Officer slot, the Commanding Officer, Captain William Rodgers was more like a ghost, rarely appearing on the bridge and spending most of his time in his office on deck 2, with the Ready Room reserved for Admiral Thorne, the Commanding Officer of Starfleet Special Operations and who used the Ark Royal for his Flag Ship. Thorne effectively commanded the ship and he was the one who mainly gave Laura her orders.
Laura now started to get more information, and she even met some of the agents, once or twice her sister even turned up, always wearing the same old jeans and leather jacket and never on a starfleet ship, these meetings between the twins were generally brief as the Admiral sent Stacy away pretty quickly. After some time as the Executive Officer she found out her sister had been demoted, and that it was the second time it had happened, all because she had refused a command and attacked her CO, when Laura confronted her sister they had a loud and brief argument.
Laura kept tabs on her sister where she could, and was relieved when Admiral Thorne told her that Stacy had moved by force to a Command Position as the USS Frontier's XO.
Laura relaxed back into her job until two months later when Admiral Thorne called him into the ready room, chucking her a small black box and simply saying "Rodgers had gone." then waving her out. Laura never found out where Captain Rodgers was gone, but now she had been promoted and was determined to be a more present CO.
Admiral Thorne didn't seen phased in the slightest when Laura began questioning him more and denying some of the damands he placed on her ship, in fact he seemed to enjoy several of the arguments they got into.
It wasn't to last however. Less than a year after her promotion Admiral Thorne disapeared after visiting an Agent on a supposedly deserted moon. Laura searched for a month but no trace of the Admiral or the Agent were ever found.
Laura was re-assigned to take over the USS Oberon, relieving her Sister who had been given command a month earlier. Stacy meanwhile was recalled to SFI as a special ops agent tasked to find the Admiral.
