[edit] BACKGROUND

Here is known the deeps of he who is called Leaf Jumper, Elder of the Clan of the Sapling, and Warrior of the First Circle.

The tale begins many turnings ago. The birthing was normal. A litter of 6 tiny creatures covered in fur colored the darkest ebony. For three weeks the children of Dewshine prospered under her loving and matronly care. Over time they quickly grew, and soon developed the mind talk. One among them was particularly precocious and inquisitive. His curiosity almost got the better of him on several occasions. His constant questions were often tiresome for his watchers, but his quick intelligence and ready wit often paid off for him. He earned the name of Trickster for his many practical jokes and games.

This went on for the turnings when the young are taught the ways of the jungle. Soon Trickster was allowed to accomplish the foragers as they gathered food and tools, and not long later he was allowed to accompany the hunters as they harvested the dangerous primary food source (GI-Ants). After his journey to the Main nest, a mysterious place full of soft lights and flickering displays discovered by his clan, he was awarded the name Leaf Jumper.

This was all before the coming of the first Tailless ones. They came like clumsy bumbling children and carved a niche for themselves in the jungles. But woe to them, for they made their nesting deep in the Dangerous Gi-Ant breeding grounds. Leaf Jumper tried to get them to move, as did all the warriors and Elders. They ignored the urgings of the people and went about their tasks. It was apparent that they considered the people mere annoyances and pests. Leaf Jumper despaired as the nesting was wiped out by the ferocious Gi-Ant swarms.

Not long later there was a great noise as a Giant metal House crashed from the sky to the jungle. Leaf Jumper was there as several Tail-less ones staggered from the wreckage. These Tail-less ones also established a nesting. Leaf Jumper was one of the Warriors and Elders selected to study these Tail-less ones further. For one thing was interesting to the clan, inside the House that had crashed wore the same noises and displays as were in the Main Clan Nest. Here was a clue to where it had come from. Leaf Jumper vowed to learn more, and to protect these Tail-less children as he had not been able to save the others.

Starfleet notes on Sloth Monkeys
Sloth Monkeys are Enigmatic little creatures. It appears that they are highly intelligent, yet it is unsure how exactly they communicate. We can get no sense of any psychic abilities, but those seem to be the only explanation.
These creatures show signs of a rudimentary intelligence and a limited ability to use simple tools. They are extremely curious and have a tendency to be constantly underfoot. The creatures have never been observed to harm a colonist or Starfleet member, however they are fierce hunters and are the main predator of the Gi-Ants. They hunt in packs and are very coordinated.
They use simple tactics despite using no apparent form of communication. Occasionally they will make chittering noises and when aggitated they will scream and babble. The Universal Translator has so far been unable to make sense of the sounds and it is unlikely that there is coherent sense. There is a theory that these creatures communicate telepathically, however no contact has been made by any race, be they Vulcan or Betazoid. In fact the Betazoids are unable to sense any emotions from them at all, a possible sign of mental shielding. Their motivations are unknown.

Medical Profile
When I could get the little bugger to stop squirming, I was able to determine that he was particularly healthy, Strong, and wiry. Unable to determine age of the subject. Was almost bitten twice during my examination. I had strapped him down and twice found him out of his restraints. He led me on a merry chace through sick bay until I could corner him again. ~ Lieutenant April Coonradt, Zeno-Biologist, Deridous Survey team (Report Summary)
