Leia Karnis

Leia Karnis was born in a small town of Clayton in England, the second child of Arnold Karnis, a Starfleet Engineer working on the Flag Ship for Admiral Depat, commander of the 8th Expeditionary Fleet, and his 580 year old El-Aurian wife, Commodore Marin Karnis a senior officer instructing at Starfleet Academy. Her brother, Carl was 2 years older then Leia.

Leia was raised as a Starfleet child, with both her parents instructing at the academy she had a good understanding of Starfleet, and decided at a very early age that she wanted to join.

However the Karnis family life wasn't to last, when the Dominion War broke out their father was recalled to serve on a starship, as an experienced engineer his expertise was needed in the field. Their newly promoted mother who had taken up office as the Deputy Chief of Starfleet Science put in several requests to overturn the order, but she wasn't successful. In 2374, eight months after the second failed invasion by the Borg, their father was killed in action during the battle to retake Deep Space Nine from the Dominion.

Shortly after Leia turned 16 her brother left to join the Academy, leaving Leia at home with her mother. In between lessons Leia spent a lot of time at Starfleet command helping her mother with simple admin tasks, carrying messages, and sometimes just getting in the way. However she did develop several contacts from her time there, including that of Captain Vera Tiles. One of the senior medical advisors in the science department.

The 70 year old captain spent many hours telling Leia about her life in starfleet, how she joined as a Medical Crewman when she was sixteen, retrained several years later as a commissioned nurse, then a couple of decades after that passed her medical degree and became a doctor.

It was during these conversations that Leia made up her mind to go into Medicine, much to the delight of her mother, who was worried another of her children may go into a role that puts them at great danger like her husband. They talked it through and by the time Leia turned eighteen she had decided to go for her nursing degree at the academy.

As expected Leia did well at the academy, being a very sociable type she got on with most of her classmates and the instructors, with many of them being friends of the family anyway, however that just meant they were more strict when it came to the lessons and testing.

When Leia graduated 4 years later she had to stay at the academy. Most of her classmates had started their nursing degrees before entering the academy, so they had left to their first assignments, Leia however remained at the academy sitting in on the next years classes to finish off her degree.

With her degree completed a year later she was assigned to Earth Spacedock where she joined the very busy medical staff, and for the first time she felt out of her depth. Even though her training had included working at San-Franciso General Infrimary and the campus sickbay, she had always known she was under the observation of the instructors, and they wouldn't let her screw up. Now however she felt like she was on her own.

It took her several weeks to become comfortable in her role, however the Head Nurse helped a lot taking Leia under her wing and making sure she knew that the team was there to help when she needed it.

a little over a year later, the now profficient Liea recieved transfer orders to Starship duty, at first she didn't want to transfer, she had friends on the large medical staff, plus she could stay at home, however she changed her mind when she discovered which ship she was being assigned to.
