Commander Methirn Vath is the Commander, Air Group aboard the USS Cambrian (NCC-74986-A).

[edit] BACKGROUND

Where Methirn Vath was born not even he knows. His parents were wandering space travelers is all he can remember, and he visited numerous worlds before the trio ran into an ion storm that not even Starfleet saw coming. Rescued by the USS Tabula Rasa, a Starfleet science vessel, Methirn managed to pull through while his parents did not. He was 8.

Methirn was shuffled through a number of foster homes and would-be adoptive families on Earth over the following years. He never completely fit in to any of them, yet he took from each an aspect of the social setting and made it his own. Some families didn't take to his dark and brooding demeanor, and others he simply refused to participate with, especially as he grew older.

It was shortly after his birthday that Methirn's family discovered a secret locked away within his genetic code. While reading a book (via PADD, of course) on the couch, he reached forward to grab the glass of water sitting on the coffee table, and the glass slid smoothly into his grip. When he went to place it back down, he let go before the now empty glass was in contact with the table surface, instead floating gently down to rest, as if nothing was amiss. Methirn was so engrossed in his novel that he didn't even notice.

Worried parents rushed the confused teenager in to the local infirmary, the mother nearly hysterical about Methirn being possessed, or having been Altered, or some other event that none would have been able to predict or control - the universe was a fickle, uncaring place as far as she was concerned. After running tests the doctors were able to rule out anything and everything she came up with (and a few were just to humor the shrieking woman.) It WAS discovered, though, that Methirn Vath possessed genetic markers similar to telepathic races, though it was subtly different. Given the mother's reaction to the simple fact that Methirn was 'different' it was decided that he be moved into a different family, one more tolerant.

Methirn moved in with a Vulcan couple, Senok and T'Priss. Fancy that. Who'd have ever though Vulcans would desire to cater to the developmental needs of an orphaned human teen?

As an emotional being, Methirn had shown the need for emotional restraint, and now the requirement of mental discipline with respect to the utilization of his abilities. He was an observant young man under their care, assimilating logic (to a degree, some people would see it as common sense and good reason), attention to detail, emotional discipline, and a finer control over his mind. They also lasted longer than any other couple or family, leaving 'home' for the Academy with at 18 - 4 years.

During his initial medical screening Methirn announced his telekinetic ability, knowing of the Federation's Laws against genetic alterations and Starfleet's ban against such people entering the Service. Before he could conduct any of the following tasks, there came a barrage of scans, tests, questions, pricks, pokes, prods, tissue samples, and so forth. His application process was halted at that point (though not yet denied outright) while the results were pending - no point in waisting valuable time and manpower if things came back the wrong way. Fortunately, Methirn was cleared as being 100% natural. If anyone had had gene modifications it would have been one of his parents.

During the Academy Methirn took quite a bit of flak from his classmates and not a few teachers for his telekinesis. Honoring the teaching of his Vulcan guardians he limited his use to his personal quarters. Hard work and actually completing the tasks 'naturally' were lessons and experiences that could never be replaced or replicated. Even so it wasn't the rigorous physical activities that (figuratively speaking) created the pain in his paracortex, or what would be analogous in a Betazoid brain. Instead it was the pranks caused in his name. All sorts of outlandish acts were taken, almost of which were perpetrated well outside of Methirn's capabilities: if he object wasn't too big, it was somewhere Methirn wasn't. Short of spitballs in class (which a sensor monitor would be able to catch) his alibi's were always airtight - Methirn took to the company of Vulcans more often than not, and as everyone knows Vulcans don't lie.

Despite his personal vow not to utilize his telekinesis, there were times when he did. Field work was the most prevalent, making adjustments of this and that as his capabilities were quite limited at the time. While he always treated his ability as a 'last resort,' there were still times when he saw no alternative.

All in all Methirn graduated with moderately high scores. His first posting was to the USS Conestoga, a Nebula class starship equipped with a unique (for it's time) equipment module, configured to launch, recover, and berth Fighter squadrons. He served there for the majority of his service within the fleet, rising through the ranks and positions.

In 2382, just after receiving his promotion to Lieutenant Commander, Methirn was tapped for a tour with the Saturn Fleet Yards, conducting test flights on prototype and pre-production space frames. He learned a great deal about Federation starfighters that is not common knowledge: the true structural limitations (the breaking point beyond the stated piloting restrictions), exactly how systems interconnected with each other, and the like. His input as a line pilot was instrumental in the developmental paths of several fighter designs, most still in the initial testing phases.

After two years of flying test craft, Methirn was reassigned again. He hadn't had any complaints about his performance, indeed the facility staff was enthusiastic about him after the first flight, but orders were orders.

[edit] PERSONAL RECORDS

|+ Family |- | Relation || Name || Occupation || Race || Location || Status |- | Father || Unknown || - || Presumed Human || - || Deceased |- | Mother || Unknown || - || Presumed Human || - || Deceased |}

Education: Various Earth school systems, Starfleet Academy.

Languages Known: Federation Standard.

Likes: Methirn prefers Vulcans to the emotional races. He takes solace in their oasis of calm and at times will engage in intellectual conversations or debates of moral consequence, usually geared towards the application of his telekinesis. Beyond this, Methirn enjoys something rarely heard outside of the Bynar race - Binary Opera. To humans it sounds like so much static, but Methirn claims to hear something deeper. He prefers the company of cats and rodents though he owns no pets.

Dislikes: Methirn hates dogs, almost with a passion. Dogs and seafood.

Strengths / Talents: Methirn's primary strength is his telekinetic capabilities, as detailed later in this document; a capable pilot with quick reflexes. He is also a passable violinist.

Weakness / Limitations: Methirn's worst element is his personality: dark and brooding. While he doesn't always engage in social activities, when he does he isn't exactly the life of the party, either. He is allergic to anesthetics and pain killers.

Ambitions, quirks, interests & hobbies: Quiet, gruff, and a fearsome task master. He doesn't take any forms of grief from anyone, above or below.

Description

Methirn is tall and muscular and sports a short mustache and beard, with close cropped hair.

Other Details

Methirn Vath is classified as a Telekene, or possessing of a telekinetic Talent. He moves things with force of will alone. His Talent is limited, however. Objects the size of a chair are about his upper limits of physical manipulation, and scooting it along the ground is about all he can manage. The smaller the object the more he can move it.

While his range is theoretically unlimited, Methirn cannot move what he cannot see: line of sight only. This is physical line of sight: remote viewing as through a camera or sensor screen are like brick walls. He must be ale to see the object and be capable of discerning what it is. Even binoculars or telescopes are unable to enhance his 'visual range.'

Methirn doesn't require absolute concentration in order to utilize his Talent. However, he can't be too distracted or mentally occupied - flying a Fighter during combat, for example, is mentally tasking enough to prohibit it. Its also lacking in application in such a setting as he can't manipulate energy and torpedoes are moving too fast for him even if they were light enough.
