[edit] BACKGROUND
[edit] Pre Starfleet
Mikaela S'Ress was born in Hong Kong, during a time both of her parents were away on personal leave, due to the pregnancy. Her mother accepted a ground assignment at Starfleet HQ, after Mikaela was born, so that she could raise her daughter, while her father went back to the Allegheny for an extended mission in the Taurus Reach. Mikaela displayed a great aptitude for mathematics and the sciences from the start of school, and was at times, well ahead of her class. During a field trip to Hawaii, to study the unique geology of the islands, the class was out camping under the stars on the slopes of one of the volcanoes. For several nights, she was absorbing in watching the movements of the heavens, and wanted to see what was out there. Her love of the heavens originated from this trip. Also, during the free time during this trip, she and a group of her friends would hit the beach, and enjoy the water sports. Mikaela developed a quick knack for surfing, probably due to her feline balance.
During her high school years, she had an interesting experience with an exchange student. The student's name was K'rok, from the Klingon Empire. He came to Earth for a year, while his father was posted to the Klingon embassy. Mikaela decided that she would offer what comfort she could to K'rok as best she could. Later, she found out that K'rok was able to adapt more to his circumstances quickly, however, he did find her help in understanding human customs extremely useful. In return, he taught her about Klingon customs, as well as his daily regimen of exercises. As a parting gift, K'rok gave Mikaela a bat'leth and mek'leth to aid her in practicing the skills he had taught her.
She excelled even more at math and science courses, and decided to follow in her parents' footsteps and join Starfleet upon graduation. Her high scores made it possible for her to gain entrance to the academy at seventeen, and graduate a year early.
[edit] Starfleet Career
After graduating near the top of her class at the Academy, Mikaela was assigned to the USS Ganymede, on her voyage to explore the Beta Quadrant as one of many science officers assigned to a Luna-class starship. She was assigned to the astrometrics lab, and occasionally helped out on various other scientific inquiries relating to the biology of the new species that the ship encountered on its voyage.
During one mission, some of her research into solving a predicament that left three away teams stranded on a class-H world. She came up with a way for the away teams to survive a massive sandstorm that swept over their base camp, after an incident with the locals nearly destroyed most of their supplies. As a result of her ingenuity, she was promoted to assistant chief science officer and to the rank of lieutenant, junior grade. After serving another two years aboard the Ganymede, an opening appeared aboard the USS Bismarck. Eager to stretch her legs to see more of the galaxy, she accepted the posting.
