Lieutenant Commander Nathaniel Caldwell is a Starfleet Officer from Deneva, who joined Starfleet during the Dominion War. Formerly the Chief Security Officer aboard the USS Cambrian, he previously served as an Investigator on Detached Service to the Starfleet's Navy Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS) on Earth. Currently he surges as the Chief of Security aboard the Galaxy-class USS Athena (NCC-80353).

[edit] BACKGROUND

Born to two Starfleet parents both on the fast track to their own commands, Nate, which he preferred to go by form an early age, was raised by his mother mostly. She put her career on hold, taking a teaching post at the local university on Deneva while their two boys were young. Nate’s brother John was three years older and the more rebellious of the two. When he was 16 he left home to find himself, only to turn up in the academy a few years later having joined the marines. When Nate was 14 his parents had a third child, a girl. Shortly before he was supposed to start high school his mother accepted the offer to become CO of Starbase 781. Nate and his sister moved with her, which was also where his fathers ship was stationed.

When Nate was 18 he joined Starfleet, not exactly sure what he wanted to focus on he took a wide range of course, quickly deciding the unlike both of his parents the sciences weren't his specialty. In his second year he decided to specialize in the Security stream, it's here where he meet several of his friends which he still has today. Unfortunately in late 2375, during the first semester of his third year, the Breen launched there attack on Starfleet Command. Caldwell and many others were injured, a secondary explosion that caused a conduit to exploded resulted in Caldwell received suver shrapnel injuries to his back. This was dealt with aboard the USS Dublin, which transported him to Andoria. Where he would complete his third year.

Opposed to the standard 4th year of classes Caldwell, like many others due to the war time losses, took a Cadet Cruise posting as a Security officer aboard the Defiant Class USS Relentless. He gained much had on experience here, as the ship was almost always running combat drills incase the Dominion went against there word. It was also here where he meet his first serious love interest, Mary Bradshaw was a fellow Cadet Cruise participant, specializing in Engineering. The two remained together through the year however they parted on good terms when they where assigned to different ships. Knowing that at their age a long distance relationship would likely not work. During a short return to earth for the graduation ceremony, Nate and three of his friends from the Academy and the Relentless, got matching tattoos on their right arms. The tattoo was of an Asian character meaning loyalty.

Caldwell’s first assignment as an officer was as the Deputy Chief of Security on the Nebula Class USS Berkeley. He served here for two years before being promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade and the position of Chief Security and Tactical Officer, still on the Berkeley. Here he served further two years. As well he began a relationship with the ships Chief Science Officer, however after several months they realized it wasn't working and broke it off, but remained good friends. In late 2381 the Berkeley was attacked by a Borg sphere while it was exploring the edge between the Beta and Delta Quadrant. The ship was destroyed when the Captain made a last ditch, yet successful ramming attack. Between the crew that was lost fighting the Borg and the ones lost in the final attack nearly a third of the crew was lost. Caldwell was one of the lucky ones and escape, following two weeks of floating in escape pods they made it to an uninhibited M-Class planet where they were stranded for a month before finally being rescued by the Galaxy Class USS Discovery.

The Captain of the Discovery turned out to be the former CO of the Relentless when Caldwell had taken his cadet cruise, she offered the vacant post of Chief of Security to him, which he accepted. The Discovery became his home for the next three years. It served in various roles of these years, included a rather high number of patrol runs. During his time here he was promoted to Lieutenant Senior Grade.

It was in January of 2384 when Caldwell had a major change of pace. The Discovery was the first on the scene of a serial murder on an outlining colony. As the ships Chief of Security Caldwell lead the investigation. By the time NCIS had arrived, Caldwell and his team had already solved the crime and arrested the guilty party.

The leader of the team that arrived from NCIS to investigate was impressed with Caldwell's work; he offered him a position with NCIS. Caldwell accepted the unique opportunity and as such went on detached service, as NCIS is a mostly civilian run agency. He spent two years here, working across the Federation. However by the end of 2384 he was missing the different pace of being in Starfleet and requested assignment again. He was rewarded with assignment as the Chief of Security aboard the Nebula Class USS Cambrian early in 2385.

After the Diplomatic Mission in early 2386 he had a chance to reembrace his NCIS training when a murder was committed on board. With the assistance of the medical department and several other members of his staff they were able to identify the murder and arrested them. Following the mission Caldwell was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and awarded the Medal of Honor.

In late 2387 he was informed by Admiral Hawke he was being transferred to take over security of the newly enlarged station, replacing Major Kepler who was taking over the resident marine battalion. However, before he could officially assume his assignment he was thrown on a transport and reassigned to the USS Athena (NCC-80353).

Strength(s)

• A keen investigative mind and a strong body, allow Caldwell to excel at both the physical side of the security field as well as the mental. He is a Qualified Flying Officer (QFO) and enjoys flying. He is also a talented marksman and is well trained on all Starfleet weapons and most common alien ones. Skilled in several forms of marital arts including Mok'bara, Jiu-Jitsu, and kickboxing.

Limitation(s)

• While normally cool under pressure Caldwell has been known to be stubborn and hot headed at time, albeit never in an emergency. He is also slightly OCD about his quarters and offices keeping them overly organized. While a skilled Tactician and by no mean unintelligence, he does have a poor grasp of medicine, finding most of it boring and what is not boring is complicated.
