Nick Davies is the celebrated Scientist behind the DaviesUpgrade and the current Chief Science Officer Luna-class USS Oberon (NCC-80111).
[edit] BACKGROUND
Nicholas Davies was born in Cardiff to Russell and Morgan Davies on the 12th of April, 2354. His parents were independently wealthy, having very very old money. The Davies Family Fortune went back centuries. With the advent of a "currency-free" culture on Earth, the Davies Family looked to more creative sources of wealth. First branching out into extra-solar exchange systems, and finally settling on the Ferengi Futures Exchange in the 2360s.
Nicholas grew up on the family's hereditary palatial estate in the Cardiff area an only child. He wasn't pampered or spoiled, his family still believed that one earned their place in society, no matter their background. Much of his earlier studies were done at home under the tutelage of private tutors. Nick quickly became quite proficient with maths and sciences. It was a visit to the histroical Swansea Observatory that ultimately locked Nick's future with the Sciences. Upon reaching his eleventh year, Nick was sent off to Eton College to complete his schooling.
It was during this time that his mother was diagnosed with Darnay's Disease. She had been ill for a few years prior, but Federation doctors insisted she had some minor affliction or another. When she was finally diagnosed, the doctors were puzzled as to why she was afflicted with a condition usually associated with the aged. In 2368 she died, at the age of 38. the death of his mother was hard on Nick's family. He ended up losing his chance at Sixth Form Select due to his falling grades and grief. After a time, his grades came back on track, but he never again reached the level he was at before.
Upon completion of his Sixth Form and graduation from Eton (class of 2372), Nick went back home to study the family business in preparation to take it over from his father. He quickly became bored with the ins and outs of finances, and the intricacies of Ferengi Commerce. After a few months, Nick announced to his father his intention of applying for Starfleet Academy. This did not go over well with his father, and the two had a falling out. Soon Nick was accepted to the Academy, and he left his family home for the stars.
Nick did well at Starfleet Academy, diving into the study of the sciences. He specialized in Planetary Science, though he took a few courses on Astrophysics. During Nick's third year at the Academy (2375), his father passed away at the age of 52 due to a transporter accident while coming to San Fransisco to visit. Nick was devastated, his last real conversation with his father being their disagreement about the Academy. He regrets to this day not being able to tell his father he loved him and respected what he ultimately had taught Nick about earning your place in society.
After his father's death, Nick found himself independently wealthy. He had millions of bars of Latinum to his name, most of which was liquidated in Ferengi Commerce. Nick wasted much of his newfound wealth in casinos and entertainment establishments around the Academy, though most was securely liquid halfway across the galaxy.Ensign Davies graduated the Academy high in his class in 2376, and was posted on the Intrepid-class USS Bellerophon (NCC-74705) as a Science Officer. Here Nick excelled. He loved the freedom of the stars, and enjoyed every minute of his assignment. During his free time, Nick found the holodeck where he began playing a holo-novel series set during the Napoleonic Wars based upon the works of C. S. Forester.
Nick served with honor, earning a commendation and a promotion to Lieutenant, Junior Grade in 2378. His promotion also came with an increase of responsibility as he was made the Planetary Sciences Section Chief aboard the USS Bellerophon.
In 2379, Nick recieved orders to the prototype USS Nova (NCC-73515) just prior to it's posting to Starfleet Battle Group Omega in the Neutral Zone answering the possible Reman invasion. Due to actions of the Romulans and the USS Enterprise-E, the battle never takes place. This would have been Nick's first taste of battle, if it came.
A year later, Nick recieved a promotion to Lieutenant, along with Assistant Chief Science Officer. The assignments aboard the science vessel USS Nova allowed Nick's expertise to shine. He explored and catalogued many previously unmapped planets and objects during his four years on the Nova. He completely customized Stellar Cartography to run at peak efficiency. Due to his success, the DaviesUpgrade was installed in every subsequent Nova-class vessel.
Following Nick's 30th birthday, he was awarded with a promotion to Lieutenant Commander, and an assignment as Chief Science Officer aboard USS Oberon (NCC-80111). He is excited to begin work on the Luna-class explorer, continuing to explore strange, new worlds.
Nick Davies is seen as socially awkward, and many non-scientists consider him to be a "dork". He has had few romances. When he acquires the courage to approach a woman, he is generally rebuffed. When he is successful, the relationship is often ended soon after due to his social awkwardness. He spends an inordinate amount of time in the Science Labs, and is considered a workaholic. When working on a particularly intensive project, Nick will often forget to eat and sleep, sometimes collapsing due to fatigue. He has recieved advice and guidance from the counselor, which he always agrees with, but rarely acts upon. His performance is rarely impacted, however, so his superiors haven't been overly concerned.
