Commodore Paul Shepherd, PhD, is the current Commanding Officer of the USS Bismarck (NCC-1108-C). He was promoted to Commodore in 2387 due to the added command of Combined Task Group 615.
[edit] BACKGROUND
[edit] Early Life
Major Jordan Shepherd a marine and a senior member of the security force at the Federation Presidential Office in Paris and Alina Getty-Shepherd the Chief Medical Officer on the USS Portland gave birth to their second child in September 2350. Their first child, an older daughter and Jordan lived in the family home in Geneva, however following the birth of the second child, a boy named Paul Jordan Shepherd, Alina requested a transfer and took assignment at Starfleet Medical - Geneva as a senior Neurologist. Four years later the pair gave birth to there third and final child, another boy named Maddox Oliver Shepherd.
Growing up Paul was a happy and adventurous child. Their children always looked young for their age, a side effect of their half El-Aurian genes. There father was fully human but their mother was an El-Aurian, having nearly a hundred years on their father. Growing up Paul enjoyed the outdoors, the family would also take trips to the ocean to go surfing or go rock climbing and hiking.
When he was 16 his mother took the family on a trip to Betazed for a medical conference. It was here that he realized his desire to join Starfleet. He and his younger brother had gone out hiking, they had come across a rather steep cliff and each dared the other to free climb it. Paul being the older brother, and rather cocky, went first. He got half way up when one of his holds gave way and he fell. Maddox was able to call for help and a Starfleet search and rescue team showed up and rescued Paul, he had a broken leg, broken arm, dislocated shoulder, and 3 broken ribs. He was impressed by the team, how well trained and cohesively they worked together. That and his own experience with his parents made him know for sure he wanted join.
While he was recovering in the hospital the youngest team members, a first year marine cadet, who's father was the team leader and was working on the team as part of his training came to check up on Paul. The two guys got talking and the marine, Tyson Davis, asked Paul out. It caught him of guard, he had never considered himself to be gay. He had dated girls in high school, plenty of girls, and had found it perfectly enjoyable. But since the man had just helped save his life, and it was the 24th century after all, he agreed. The two had dinner at a quaint little restaurant near the coast. They ended up spending most of the week together before Paul had to return to Earth, but the pair agreed to kept in touch. As a going away gift Tyson gave Paul a watch, that had been Tyson grandfather. Paul loved it and it became the start of an ever-growing collection.
[edit] Academy Years
Paul Shepherd applied to Starfleet Academy when he was 17, shortly before his 18th birthday that September. He was accepted, but unlike many of his peers Shepherd had no clear idea what he wanted to do. Many aspects of Starfleet held great appeal to him the marines intrigued him, from his father, as did the sciences and medicine from his mother. However he quickly found his skill set in the latter to be below par for a note worthy career. He also had flown several times and enjoyed that, but the security and tactical fields had a great appeal too. His second year was spent in the security stream. He excelled at this, having a knack for the tactical planning side of things, and many of his instructors told him he had a great analytical mind.
During spring break of his second year at the academy, he and several classmates when to Costa Rica, emerging a week later with a serious hangover and several new tattoos. Including one of a rather crude representation of one of his less preferred instructors. Paul ended up getting most of these removed but kept one he really did like, it included the Geneva Coat of Arms superimposed on the Flag of Switzerland, the tattoo was on his right shoulder. Today it is mirrored by a tattoo of sort of fusion of the Federation and Starfleet emblems.
During his final exams of his second year he was approached by Colonel Richard Cassidy, of Starfleet Intelligence and was offered a position in SFI's training program. Shepherd was surprised by this, he hadn't been planning on joining Intelligence but he was intrigued and accepted. His third year was spent split across two core worlds, with his first semester on the Andoria Campus and his second on the Betazed Campus.
While his first semester in Intelligence was rather dull, studying hard in the icy climate of Anodra he managed to relax more during his second year on Betazoid. It was here where he was managed to reconnect with, now Second Lieutenant Tyson Davis. Davis was taking the Intelligence Training for Officers. The two rekindled there relationship. During a weekend trip camping and climbing and surfing, Paul was again injured. He now has the opinion, that Betazed had it out to get him. Paul and Tyson were surfing near a coral reef and Paul was caught in a riptide. He was slammed into the reef, and broke his leg, in addition to almost drowning. He recovered but was left with a nasty scar on his calf. When Paul returned to Earth for his fourth year, the pair kept in closer contact then the first time.
Shepherd proved to be a very skillful intelligence agent, and was offered several positions for when graduated. Although he knew he could do it and would be able to do it well, he decided to return to Earth to finished of his Academy training. He managed to earn a spot in the Advanced Combat Studies Program, a much desired and competitive combined program with aspects of Security, Tactical, Command, Strategic Operations, and Intelligence.
[edit] From Absalon to Romulus
Ensign Paul Shepherd graduated 5th in his class, and addition to his commission he completed his Master's Degree in Military and Tactical Sciences. Ensign Shepherd lucked out and was assigned to the newly commissioned USS Absalon (NCC-79133) as its Assistant Chief Security and Tactical Officer, the Galaxy class vessel would serve as his home for the next 7 years.
While his first year was rather dull, with the Absalon running through an extensive shakedown, Paul did manage to impress the ships Rigelian Captain, Nar Mekan, and he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade and made the Chief Security and Tactical officer. Following the ship's current chief's promotion to XO. His next two years were a bit more exiting, not necessarily in the good way. In 2373 the Absalon was involved in both the Battle of Sector 001 and several battles of the Dominion War. In the Battle of Sector 001 the Absalon was damaged mid way through the battle. With it's life support still intact in fell back and began rescuing survivors instead of trying to continued fighting. During the next two years Shepherd aboard the Absalon was involved in many key battles during the war. Over the course of the war Shepherd earned several commendations, he often felt badly about these, many of these were given following battles where many people under his command died. He knew they were often circumstances out of his control he sill felt badly. During the battle of Cardassian several members of the senior staff were killed or gravely wounded, Captain Mekan ordered Shepherd to take command of the Absalon for the remainder of the battle.
Once the ship was patched up, Lieutenant, now senior grade, Paul Shepherd and now the Chief Intelligence Officer returned to duty desiring a bit of a change of pace. With the end of the war, the Absalon, like many ships spent a lot of its time rebuilding. In between 2375 and 2377 she helped rebuild and reopen 14 Starbases and 3 colonies. 2378 saw her return to a more exploratory role, taking point on several large-scale operations. It was during this time that he also completed his Doctorate in Criminal and Military Sciences.
In 2378, a month after the proposal of Tyson Davis to Paul, the Absalon went in for a Major refit. During the refit the pair married in a small ceremony in Geneva, Paul's home, and they had their honey moon in New Zealand, where Davis was from. While there they also got matching tattoos across their hearts. In addition they returned to the Absalon with a new four-legged friend in toe, a miniature chocolate lab named Walker. The miniature lab looked like a regular chocolate lab puppy, that just stayed looking like a puppy.
In the final days of the refit an old associate, General Cassidy called upon Shepherd and Davis for a classified Starfleet Intelligence, Special Operations Mission. It lasted a year, where they were ordered under deep cover to Romulus. They had been sent to investigate Intel that lead the Starfleet brass to believe that the Tal Shiar was planning to replace the Federation President with a cloned agent. Even after their failed attempt to so with Captain Jean-Luc Picard. The pair were almost caught several times but managed to leave the planet undetected a year later. They found no proof of the accusations and were recalled. However as they were making the final leg of the journey towards the neutral zone, they were caught. It turned out the asset of theirs that had arranged their transport sold them out to the Tal Shiar. When they were captured the only reason Paul made it through the torture was knowing Tyson was there with him. Following a month of torture, Major Ariennye Tei finally decided to end it, she slit Davis' throat in front of Paul, as Davis, at the time a Lieutenant Colonel was the senior officer. While physically he was left with a range of smaller scars, the Tal Shiar apparently didn't like it when there work left marks, the psychological injuries were much much worse. He had lost, his husband and his best friend.
Paul awoke 3 weeks later in the Absalon's sickbay, the Romulans had sedated him put him in a stasis pod aboard an escape pod and sent him back to the Federation, so he could tell them what happened. Following his recovery Shepherd returned to duty as the Absalon's Chief Strategic Security Officer and Second Officer. With the loss of Davis the Absalon's CO decided to have it's Security, Marine and Strategic Operations departments combined. Shepherd serious contemplated leaving the fleet, but he knew Davis wouldn't want him to.
His return to the Absalon was a solemn one, their puppy Walker had been adopted by the Absalon's Chief Scientist Jennifer Hursh, and Paul made no move to take him back. When he finally returned to duty in his new capacity he was a changed man. He was quiet and isolated, he spent almost all of his off time in his quarters, in the dark, drinking.
While the Absalon, on several occasion, attempted to go in and investigate, or get revenge of some sort, they were ultimately fruit less. Two years later Shepherd couldn't stay on the Absalon any longer, it held to many bad memories.
[edit] The Ticonderoga, Time Travel and a Taste of Command
By 2382 he knew if he was ever going to move on, he need to get away. He was offered the XO posting on the Akira Class USS Ticonderoga (NCC-5047-D), by General Cassidy. He accepted it, along with a promotion to Commander and slowly returned to his normal life, never truly getting over it but managing to return to a functioning life.
The three years Shepherd spent as the Ticonderoga's XO were a mix. His emotional lows were countered by the highs of being able to do what he did well. Over all he gained valuable experience. He also served on the Ticonderoga during the Keralen War, where the Ticonderoga worked mostly to escort civilian ships out of the war zone and to patrol boarders.
In early 2385 the Ticon was beaming an away team down to the planet Izarian, to the Federation Embassy. However, their transporter beam was deflected back through time over twenty years, to the point prior to the Izarians making First Contact with the Federation, or breaking the Warp barrier. The ship managed to beam the away to beam back the away team, by simply attempting the transport again in reverse, they managed to beam back everyone in the first attempt except the XO, Commander Shepherd. The away team only experience a few minuets of the past, and luckily had not been seen or discovered by anyone. The second attempt retrieved Shepherd, despite only about 5 minuets passing in 2382 Shepherd had spent more then 4 years in the past.
While stuck in past on the Izarian homeworld he tried to blend in and keep a low profile. He was discovered by one of the planets leading theoretical scientist, Mar Trailia, she knew something about Paul was strange, and he eventually told her the truth. She took him in, and helped him blend in with two eventually developed a relationship until Shepherd was spontaneously beamed away. Something Paul warned her may happen. He never divulged any of this to anyone. When he returned to the 'present' Paul tried to look her up, but found out she had died three years after Paul was beamed away, killed by a plague that hit the planet. The Ticonderoga's Scientists believe that some sort of micro temporal wormhole existed for a short time between the planet and the ship. When the matter stream passed through it, it was displaced. The wormhole quickly deteriorated resulting in the difference in return time.
[edit] Aboard Bismarck
In 2385 he took his promotion to the Captaincy of the USS Bismarck (NCC-1108-C), he felt slightly out of place when he first arrived, coming in above the ships XO who had experience rivaling his own, and knew the crew much better. He felt as if he had something to prove and this feelings manifested his insecurity by taking a very hard nosed, by-the-book when he first began. This quickly fell by the wayside as he warmed up to his new crew.
The first mission which he commanded was to lead the Bismarck and a trio of other vessels to an abandon Cardassian station. There mission was to try and get the station up and running again, so Starfleet could utilize it. However between the discovery of squatters and a failed Cardassian science project, the team was forced to abandon the station. The Cardassians had been attempting to use a micro-star to generate massive amounts of power. The projected failed and the star collapsed into a microscopic pulsar. The gravitational stress eventually collapse the station a few months after the Bismarck left.
The Bismarck also rescued marine Derek Stone during the Lamaok Nor mission, Paul and Derek had met each other during Paul's time on the Absalon. Derek who had been through a lot recently, reconnected in friendship with Paul, which also involved a drunken hook-up, something, while neither man expected a relationship out of it, Paul was worried it would effect their friendship, something it didn't do.
The crew took extended shoreleave, during this time Paul meet Colonel Lee Dylan, a marine recently assigned to Daedalus commanding a Marine Ranger Battalion. The two had a connection, they admitted they both had feelings for each other but wanted to take it slow, both having relationship troubles in their past.
The Bismarck's next mission was to the colony Aresanoba II, in the DMZ between the Federation and Cardassian Union the planet had changed hands several times over the past years, currently it is jointly run with both large Federation and Union populations. The Bismarck was sent to investigate an explosion, Shepherd remained in command of the situation, while turning most of the diplomatic work over to Commander Fields, who was more qualified. While trying to take a few moments to themselves Lee and Paul were caught in a bombing of a cafe, where Lee risked his life to save Paul, further cementing there budding relationship. Eventually everything was straighten out with the original explosion being an accident, and the subsequent civil unrest being dealt with. The situation was turned over to the USS Dag Hammarskjold, and the Bismarck returned to Daedalus Station, where Shepherd was informed both his CO and Second Officer were being reassigned.
Following the Aresanoba mission Shepherds father visited, and told him that he had discovered the location of Ariennye Tei, the women who killed Tyson. Shepherd managed to arrange for leave to take care of matters he never would be able to officially. However when Colonel Dylan found out what he intended to do he went with him, knowing that he would need someone to watch his back. He managed to get clearance for a 'leave of absence', but before he could leave Lee insisted on accompanying him. He ended up saving Paul's life, on more then one occasion during the mission, and despite being a little worse for wear they both made it back alive, now closer because of it.
As 2385 came to a close, and the Bismarck took shoreleave following the mission to investigate the Bermuda's distress signal, Paul meet someone who would change his life. Following an altercation with a shop owner, Jordan Trailia told Paul that he was his son. Jordan was the son of Mar Trailia, the women he had become close with during the time he spent displaced on the Izarian homeworld. Jordan had been born several months after Paul was beamed away. Mar didn't divulge who the father was, and following her death a few years later when the planet was ravaged by a plague, Jordan grew up not knowing his father. When he was 15 he ran away from his abusive foster home, eventually stumbling across the information of who his father was while be treated in a Starfleet Medical Center. He then went to find Paul, more out of curiosity then any real desire to become a family. However when Paul offered him a place to live on his ship, along with money and some of the other things he had gone without while he was nominally traveling the area. He accepted, at least temporarily.
While still struggling with getting to know his son, they are making progress, mainly through not rushing it, and giving each other their space. Lee has also been very supportive of Paul during this time. In mid 2386 the Bismarck was deployed to the opposite side of the Federation, in the Romulan Neutral Zone. The Bismarck was tasked as part of a group to find out why several stars had gone prematurely super nova. After finding out it was due to a splinter Tal Shiar group, they managed to destroy the Romulan vessel that was destroying stars and saved several thousand colonists.
The Bismarck was then taking some R&R on a Starfleet boarder station, here the Bismarck was tasked to transport a Klingon fugitive back to the Klingon Homeworld. Soon after crossing the boarder the ship was attacked by non-Military Klingons. They boarded the ship and retook the prisoner. The Bismarck was then able to bluff a Klingon ship into filling them in, apparently the fugitive was actually a pro-democracy political activist, who would likely be executed to put down the movement. They tracked him to an planetary based the movement was working out of and Shepherd ordered a surgical strike to be carried out. It was successful but added to the Bismarck s death toll. However the Bismarck was ordered to return to the Federation, while the Federation Diplomatic Service reevaluated the mans claims. Shepherd and much of the crew were angered by this, with the mission accomplishing nothing and costing the crew highly.
In early 2387 the Bismarck headed to Earth for leave and a refit, and Shepherd along with most of the crew took the time to see family and friends on Earth. The leave and refit were cut short when Jordan and Colonel Dylan were attacked, and Jordan was kidnapped.
The crew was able to track a suspicious acting vessel and eventually track it down and rescue not only Jordan, but three other teenagers who'd been kidnapped as part of a serial kidnapping by the Orion Syndicate. They again returned to Earth, and in addition to spending time together Paul also introduced Jordan to his own parents, who despite being shocked about suddenly having a teenaged grandson, were overjoyed to meet him none the less.
[edit] Promotion to Commodore
Before departing Earth to head back to Deep Space 19, Shepherd was called in by Admiral Vaughn and informed of his promotion. Promoted to Commodore he would be the first commander of Combined Task Group 615, a joint Cardassian / Federation unit operate in the area between the Pacifica Expanse and the Cardassian Union to help combat a rash of recent pirate attacks. Although his command of the unit would be temporary he would retain his new rank and position of Commander of the Bismarck afterwards.

"...Paul Shepherd, a 16 year old male was injured in a rock-climbing incident. He was rescued by a search and rescue team who stabilized him for transport. He was moved here and is in recover. He will likely have some scaring on his back and chest but the rest should heal just fine. He did suffer a broken leg, broken arm, dislocated shoulder, and 3 broken ribs. So where going to hold him here for at least a week, the recovery will last some where between 2 week and 6 weeks. I'm not too worried about his post op care as his mother is a Doctor..."

"...Paul Shepherd has suffered greatly over the mast weeks. Following his and Major Davis capture the pair had been tortured for and extended period. In typical Tal-Shiar fashion most of the torture was through methods that directly effect the nervous system to inflict pain. But also as usually the torture needed something more physically to get satisfaction. There are signs of various wounds that have been patched up, leaving a variety of scars of various size and colour across his body. Several of note include three parallel scars where a bladed weapon was stabbed between his ribs (the 3rd and 4th, 4th and 5th, and 5th and 6th). As well there evidence of almost every finger has been broken as well as both arms. I've repaired most of the damage but he will be left with some scaring..."
