The Peregrine is essentially modified warp capable shuttle. It's primary role is support for fleet actions, escort and patrol. They may be carried aboard any starship with sufficient hangar space. Akira-class Cruisers, and Galaxy-class Explorers, are often the platform of choice for Peregrines since they have large Shuttlebays.
Peregrines were extensively used during the Dominion War in support of fleet action, by keeping Jem'Hadar fighters occupied. Prior to the Dominion War, fighters were mainly used to protect Federation member worlds, colonies and outposts. During the war several other Fighters were developed, some of them proved to be failures while others are still in operation.
The Peregrine Class is sometimes mistaken for the much larger Condor-class Courier which is essentially a scaled up version of the Peregrine.
