[edit] BACKGROUND

Pirek had a difficult childhood, he was born to two prominant Starfleet doctors, Doctor Boren Korns and Doctor Iseil Korns. They were very caring parents, but they were also work-a-holics, and spent much of their days in and out of the starfleet hospital in Kired City, Betazed.

Pirek spent much of his time with his neighbours, playing with their daughter Moraina Hurst, Pirek's best friend, and due to the traditionalist ways of their parents, his future bride.

Unfortunately a tragic accident robbed Pirek of his father when he was eight years old, a sample virus Boren was working with infected him when he accidently damaged it's container, while the facility was saved by his quick thinking in raising the emergency fields around his lab, the virus was incurable. For 2 long weeks Iseil spent every day along side her husband trying to continue his research and find a cure, with no success.

With his father dead and his mother distraught the pair left Betazed as Pirek's mother transfered to Starbase 112 to be away from the place her husband died.

Pirek spent the rest of his childhood moving from one posting to another, his mother never able to settle anywhere too long.

After years of being dragged over the the quadrant Pirek eventually tired of moving, and persuaded his mother to let him return to Betazed alone. So at Seventeen he moved back to his home town, unknown to his mother however he enrolled in Medical School. His arranged bride however was nowhere to be found. The family had left the town many years before.

With his background he already had a good grounding in medical knowledge and progressed well through his first years training. With his internship and training taking place at the same hospital his father was killed in.

With his 4 years of medical school and internship completed, Pirek deffered his internship so he could enroll in Starfleet

Starfleet academy was nothing new to Pirek, he had spent most of his life in and around Starfleet, his med school internship had taken place in a Starfleet hospital, so he was used to the life, though he never fell in line when it came to terms of address. He rarely saluted and only called senior officers sir or ma'am when prompted.

Pirek completed his residency during his third year and when he graduated he was posted directly to the USS Perin, little did he know his mother had just taken over as the ships CMO.

She became very angry when she discovered her son had not long joined the career that had robbed her of her husband, but also Starfleet. Despite this the two worked well together until Iseil resigned 4 years later. Pirek, who had worked his way up to Lt.jg was transfered to the USS Athena with a promotion to take over as Chief Medical Officer
