[edit] PERSONAL RECORDS
Childhood
Raven was born in 2357 to then-Major Venok of Vulcan and then-Lieutenant Commander Iliana Kiera of Delta IV. Lieutenant Commander Kiera was the ship's Chief Science Officer, while Major Venok was the Acting Chief of Security and Tactical Officer. As the Excalibur was heading home after the successful completion of a mission along the Cardassian border, and about a day from starbase, Lieutenant Commander Kiera went into labor. She was in that state for over twelve hours. Luckily, the baby was born without complications or a C-section.
She was named Raven after it was discovered that she would have hair, from her Vulcan heritage. The color of the hair was as dark as the bird she is named after. It was also suggested to her parents from one of their colleagues, who had performed the genetic predicting to what the baby would look like. The name seemed to fit, and thus she became Raven Kiera.
Raven spent most of her childhood following her parents around from assignment to assignment, but not staying too long in any one place to make many friends. She didn't make her first true friend until her parents were both stationed aboard the USS Indianapolis, an Excelsior-class starship. Her best friend was Chris Kensington, the son of one of the Indianapolis's science officers. They had met in school, as well as when Iliana entertained some of her coworkers after their shifts.
In 2369, the ship encountered a particularly nasty ion storm, causing severe damage to most of the ship. Raven and Chris were on a class field trip to main engineering at the time, to expose the children to a life in Starfleet when the ion storm struck. Chris was injured from the shrapnel from an exploding console. Raven was very worried about her friend at first, but after seeing how short-handed the engineering crew was from the other injuries in the room, she offered to lend a hand. The twelve-year old assisted the engineering crew to make critical repairs to the ship’s warp drive, by following their directions carefully. It was here that she first learned of her love of engineering. The chief engineer, Lieutenant Kevin Dann, gave Raven, as a thank you, all the tools she had used to help repair the warp drive, including a tricorder.
Raven felt very worried and sad about her friend, but was relieved when she found out that he was going to be fine. She was also saddened further when Chris's parents put in a transfer to a planetary assignment, to protect their son. Upon learning this news, her emotions were thrown into chaos, and it was decided that Raven would spend a year on Vulcan and Delta IV to learn more about her heritage with her grandparents, among other things.
Vulcan and Delta IV
Raven spent her year on Vulcan in the care of her father's parents, one of whom is a retired admiral from Starfleet. Although it was quite a different experience from living aboard a starship, Raven adapted to some aspects of planetside life quickly. However, she had some trouble adjusting to a Vulcan way of life, as the memories of the incident on board the Indianapolis was still fresh in her mind. As a result, Raven's emotions were in chaos, and caused her a great deal of trouble in school.
Forced with a wayward teenager, Raven's grandparents met with the school administrator to come up with a viable solution. Since Raven was an excellent student, he would be willing to readmit Raven after her emotions were more under control. The logical solution, to her grandparents, was to have Raven undergo tutelage from a Vulcan master to help bring her emotions under control, as well as to be taught about her telepathic abilities.
After six months under the guidance of the Vulcan master, she returned to her grandparents' home, and now had full control of her emotions, as well as the basic knowledge of how to utilize her telepathic abilities, including how to perform mind melds. When she returned to school, she had to catch back up to her classmates. However, with the renowned Vulcan education system, she was able to quickly catch back up to other children of her age, and even surpass them in her strong areas of mathematics and the sciences.
After spending the year on Vulcan, she went to live with her grandparents on Delta IV. The lifestyle between the two worlds was very different. She again had some difficulty in adjusting from the rigorous and stoic Vulcan lifestyle to the more carefree Deltan lifestyle. She did enjoy her time on that world, and learned a great deal about her telepathic and empathic abilities as a Deltan, and how not to take advantage of the lesser species, in terms of sexuality. She thoroughly enjoyed the surfing and the various forms of aquatic recreation provided by the island life from the various archipelagos of the world. They would become some of her favorite hobbies later on, as well as some inspiration for some of her holodeck programs.
Raven's most memorable moment on Delta IV happened near the time she would be leaving to rejoin her parents. Her grandmother was dying of old age, and Raven was sad to see her deteriorate in front of her, but she knew that death was just the logical end to life, and could not be eluded forever. Before she died, Raven's grandmother had given her a golden necklace with a star-shaped emerald pendent attached to it. Her grandmother also told Raven to only wear the necklace when she had found true love.
High School Years
After her grandmother's funeral, she followed her mother to Iliana's next assignment on Earth, where Commander Kiera was assigned to Starfleet Science to assist with various research and development projects. Iliana wasn't a huge fan of city life, and decided to live in the California countryside after it was suggested by a couple of her colleagues.
Raven was soon enrolled in high school at Calaveras High, in San Andreas, California. The Mother Lode region of the Sierra Nevada mountains were filled with various place and things to explore, but Raven didn't really like doing that too much, as she preferred to concentrate more on her studies.
As she developed into an intelligent and attractive young woman, many of her male classmates tried repeatedly to ask her out on a date. However, she refused them every time, since she had no interest in pursuing that kind of relationship at that time. Thus, she unknowingly earned the nickname "Ice Queen" from all the teenage hearts she crushed. Later on, she realized that as she was moving through adolescence, her powerful Deltan pheromones were driving all of the people who asked her out to go crazy about her, when they were developed. Her mother would then help her out to suppress the more potent ones, to keep all the love-seekers at bay.
Raven kept busy with various extracurricular activities. She played on the varsity high school softball team, as a sophomore, as one of their starting shortstops. She was also one of their top hitters, and ended her high school career with a .375 batting average, 58 RBIs, and ten home runs. During the Mother Lode League championship game, she was pivotal in clinching the title from starting a triple play to end the Bret Harte Bullfrogs chances of making a come back in the final inning of the game. She also worked in the school's engineering club on various projects. They working on a variety of subjects, including a few in holography, warp dynamics, and ancient technology.
One of her favorite projects with the engineering club, during her senior year, was trying to retrofit ancient 20th century land vehicles to work with modern 24th century technology. The car given to her to work on was an old 1976 Chevrolet Camaro. The ultimate test of this project was a race between the various cars, as the best test of their abilities. The circuit was from the California-Oregon border to the Mexican border, and it weaved across the state from Lake Tahoe, to the San Francisco Bay and down the central coast, and even through Death Valley. It was a tight race for most of the course, but she managed to edge out her closest competitor to win the race. As the winner, she was given the car as a grand prize.
This club, as well as her experience aboard the Indianapolis earlier in her youth, inspired her to want to become an engineer, and apply to Starfleet Academy. She graduated from Calaveras High at the top of her class, and began attending Stafleet Academy that August.
Starfleet Academy
Raven enrolled in Starfleet Academy in 2374, and although the Dominion War was still raging at this time, the Academy was dedicated to training officers for the time after the war was over. Her aptitude and entrance exams scores qualified her for entry into the Academy's Delta squadron. The squadron comprised of cadets from various disciplines, so that they could learn off of each other, and be exposed to various other methods of thinking.
During the Raid on San Francisco, the Delta Squadron was on special assignment to Africa for some survival training. As a result, they were spared having to go through the horrific Breen attack on Earth first-hand. They shortly returned after the attack and assisted in the cleanup and rebuilding efforts as part of their Academy training. During this time, Raven met with her fellow engineering cadet, Barry Frisco.
The two of them began to develop a very good friendship during their time at the Academy. Barry offered to teach Raven Klingon martial arts and calisthenics, which she accepted since she missed the workout from when she was playing softball in high school. Nothing really developed between the two, and when Raven thought that he might want to expand their friendship further. Sadly, her heart was broken when he said he wanted to focus on his career, instead of pursuing a romantic relationship. However, their friendship endured that misstep, and they still remain good friends to this day, even to the point that Barry selected Raven as the template for his Starship Avatar hologram.
In her senior year of the academy, as she was completing her engineering major and science minor, she met a freshmen cadet that held back after class when she went to visit her mother, now-Captain Kiera. Cadet Mikaela S'Ress, a half-Caitian cadet, was eager to learn from Raven's mother, and she thought it would be interesting and good for Raven to help Mikaela with her studies, as she thought that Raven needed to loosen up a bit. Their friendship developed through the year, and they were known as some devious pranksters. However, they were never caught after hatching one of their nefarious schemes.
Also during her senior year, her roommate and another of their friends formed a tight-knit group of cadets. Out of project that was working on involving some holographic subroutines, they developed the means to actually give themselves, and anyone they chose, wings to fly around on the holodeck. They later dubbed themselves, the Celestial Angels. The name was chosen by Raven's long-time Academy roommate, Neferteri Ikan.
Relationships with other men were similar to their high school counterparts, and Raven's nickname of "Ice Queen" endured, as many cadets had their hearts crushed under her resolve to focus on her career.
Early Career
Upon graduation from the Academy, Raven was posted to the USS Exeter as a member of the engineering staff. Although, she adjusted to life readily aboard the vessel, she did butt heads with the chief engineer on occasion about how she performed some of her tasks. Nothing dramatic happened over these incidents, but she was offered a promotion for her hard work, and reassignment to the Exeter's science department, which she accepted. She left engineering for a time, since she didn't enjoy having her methods being criticized often by her superior officer.
After spending a year in the Exter's science department, she was reassigned to the USS Rutledge, as the assistant chief science officer. While aboard the Rutledge, an away team was trapped on the surface of a planet. The ship had to suddenly leave orbit, to avoid an incoming ion storm, and the away team had to take refuge quickly. The planet they were surveying had a population of pre-Iron Age humanoids, which they were observing from a distance. As a member of that away team, she helped them steer clear of the natives, by managing to fool their tracking hounds sense of smell and hearing by generating a neural dampening field to block olfactory and auditory stimuli.
A few months later, when an engineering position opened aboard the USS Thunderchild, she jumped at it. Raven had missed working in engineering, and wanted to get back there as fast as she could. Her time there was marked by assisting in the first contact of two species and improvements to the warp field of the Akira-class starship. Her modifications would earn her recommendations from both the chief engineer and the commanding officer of the Thunderchild.
Her successes aboard the Thunderchild led her to a promtion to Lieutenant Commander, and the posting of Chief Engineer of the USS Challenger. She served as the Challenger's chief engineer for two years. She enjoyed working aboard the Galaxy-class starship, and had a good number of friends there, but she still was elusive in pursuing more defined relationships. During a mission to investigate a mysterious distress call, the ship fell under siege by some Orion pirates. These pirates were daring enough to try to steal a Galaxy-class starship to sell on the black market after they had stripped her down, something that Raven took personally. Her efforts in saving the ship from this savage attack earned her the promotion to full Commander.
Aboard the USS Hyperion
After serving aboard the Challenger, she accepted the assignment of Chief Engineer aboard the USS Hyperion-F from her old friend, Commander Barry Frisco, who was going to be the Executive Officer aboard the USS Zodiac. Although, adjusting to life aboard the Sovereign-class starship was difficult, she eventually managed to fit in.
After a vicious attack from the Romulans, the Hyperion was undergoing a shakedown cruise to make sure that all the repaired and refit systems were working again. As this mission began, she and the then-XO Calvin Adams, sparred in her Klingon calisthenics exercise program. After a lengthy match, she managed to knock the marine down into the ocean water. Little did either of them know, that would be the start of an interesting relationship.
The two of them exchanged sparring blows and dinner for some time, and Raven resisted opening up to Calvin, but the marine wouldn't quit. For some reason, neither did she; she enjoyed puzzles and Calvin Adams was presenting a very unique one to her. Their relationship was often the subject of scuttlebutt among the crew as their relationship was a roller coaster ride at times. Also, no one, especially those two, seemed to know where that relationship was headed.
Raven was very helpful with the Hyperion rediscovering the ancient Atlanteans from Earth, as well as helping to restabilize DS7. During the Atlantean mission, with the help of additional Hyperion personnel, they discovered the design and materials used in the Atlantean construction of their vessels was similar to those of the NX-class starships of the United Earth Starfleet from two centuries prior. This link helped to unravel that mystery, and aid in establishing relations with humanity's no-longer-mythical brothers.
After a temporal causality loop anomaly on the way back to DS7, Colonel Adams and her decided to take a vacation to Gedi Prime. The resort world of Gedi Prime was where her relationship with Colonel Adams took a sharp turn in the romantic direction. Thanks to a little stunt that the Colonel pulled at the top of a waterfall, both of her halves began to fight for dominance in her mind. However, the both of them thoroughly enjoyed their vacation together, as the waterfall would make its way into one of Raven's many holodeck programs.
Their relationship furthered evolved during the time Q sent the Hyperion back in time to mid-19th century Earth. After an accident in Main Engineering, on trying to figure out a way to help Q, Raven was injured and Calvin rushed her to sickbay, similar to a knight in shining armor. Calvin was also helpful in bringing Raven out of a semi-comatose state while she was recuperating in sickbay. After she had recovered from that ordeal, she began to open up even more to him. From her perspective, there was something about him that she found exhilarating.
After the Hyperion successfully returned to their own time, and without disrupting the timeline, Raven was faced with an interesting dilemma. After Calvin asked what was in the future for their relationship, she thought hard about what she thought was next for them. Both the emotional and logical conclusion to that problem was that they should be together. On the spot, she proposed marriage to him, which he immediately accepted.
After a wrenching mission to New Haven, the Hyperion returned to Deep Space Seven, bruised and depressed. They had just lost their captain to a group known as the Children of Cartwright, and they wanted to go after him. But, they couldn't due to orders.
During the shoreleave, Raven and Calvin finally said, "I do." They were married on board the Hyperion, with Admiral Thornton presiding. Raven chose to hyphenate her last name, for official documents. Also, she adopted the five year old daughter of her new husband, Rasha Adams. The two ladies have hit it off extremely well.
