During his childhood, Rex learnt the valuable tool of hunting and gathering, preparing him for later life when he would raise his own young. However, given he was a gamma male, it would be unlikely he would find a mate to raise a family with. He accepted this at an early age, knowing full well there were three types of Pahkwa-thanh males, alphas who would have many mates, betas who would have one mate and gammas, like himself, who would be more academic, but still show signs of caring and good-natured mannerisms.

Despite many alphas being empathic, Beta and Gamma males were less likely to have such empathic abilities, but do occasionally show similar chracteristics, gamma males less so than beta males. It has been postulated that this empathic ability is linked to mating, but nothing has been confirmed.

When he joined Starfleet, he was provided ample opportunity for medical research into children medicine and psychology, which created a name for him in the field. He also quickly ascertained a reputation for ripping his uniform, due to his abnormal bulky size even for a Pahkwa-thanh. He found that he was having to renew his uniform on a daily basis. To this end, Starfleet Command authorised him not to wear a uniform whilst on duty, but a ribbon around his neck with his rank insignia. He has since designed a cloak that will cover most of his body, in response to patient worries.

Given their extensive medical science knowledge, it was a god send to the Federation when Felona VIII joined the Federation in 2360. 100 male Pahkwa-thanh immediately joined Starfleet, many taking positions in medicine, Rex was one of these males. Working up through the medical ranks to become CMO aboard the USS Michigan at the rank of Commander.

Being one of the foremost doctors in the Federation, Rex saw a lot of medical emergencies to Federation planets. On one occasion the Michigan was sent to a medical/humanitarian mission to Luthiana V, where the inhabitants were being ravaged by a bizarre rain storm that was toxic to humanoids. Being one of only a handful of non-humanoid species, he was able to render medical assistance up until the rain storm ended.

Out of personal interest, he took the Command and bridge exam but was unable to complete it when the USS Michigan was attacked by an unknown assailant, believed to be Romulan. Being a medical vessel, the ship was severely outgunned and sustained heavy casualties including the entire bridge crew and senior staff when one torpedo ripped through the shields and another completely destroyed the main bridge, killing all occupants. As the senior-most officer aboard the ship, Rex took command and saved over 400 people, escaping barely from the clutches of their assailants.

Back on Earth, he was promoted to Captain and given the option to command a starship, but refused in favour of a planet-side assignment. He was subsequently assigned as the Surgeon General to Dorvan V.

Following an incident whilst on Dorvan V, that involved renegade Star Fleet officers taking hostages from the settlement and ensuing riots, many Star Fleet officers were ordered to leave Dorvan V, including Rex. He was granted leave for a month, he refused and immediately set to work in Star Fleet Medical. Two years later, Rex was transferred to the USS Hyperion (NCC-7438-F) as the CMO.

Rex lost control when he received news that his mother, two brothers and sister were killed by the Hobus Star nova disaster. He will always hold them in high regard.

PERSONALITY TRAITS

PERSONALITY: Easy going, works best with Children, but has an excellent bed-side manner. Dispite looking like an old Earth Dinosaur, he sees himself as nothing of the sort and goes out of his way to make people, particularly Humans, at ease with his appearance and presence. He shrugs off the ideas that people are scared of his appearance, and laughs about it, making the odd joke to ease the atmosphere. Rex is very spiritual, as are most Pahkwa-thanh and believe that all life is sacred. He, like other Pahkwa-thanh will not eat another sentient being, but must eat raw meat to sustain his body.

STRENGTHS: Strong, expertly gifted in surgery, shows minor characteristics of empathy, particularly with children
WEAKNESS: Must eat raw meat, meaning he chooses to eat alone in his quarters, his appearance is similar to that of an old Earth Dinosaur leading to people who are uncomfortable with him, particularly humans
TALENTS: Hunting, Surgery, putting children at ease.
LIMITATIONS: His small forearms are, although extremely adept in surgery, create a limited stretch for him, despite his height. Given his rather large tail, he needs a speciallised chair to sit in for comfort. Due to his rather abnormal bulky shape by Pahkwa-thanh standards, he is exempt from wearing a uniform, but wears a ribbon instead.
