Ryan was the former Diplomatic Officer aboard the USS Athena (NCC-80353).
[edit] BACKGROUND
Ryan James Mitchell was born on July 25, 2349 in Annapolis, Maryland. His parents were both Starfleet Commanders. His father worked at an R&D facility in Patuxent River, testing new fighters and shuttles while his mother was the Staff Judge Advocate to the Chief of Staff, Starfleet. Ryan is the elder child of a set of twins, his younger brother Luke was born three minutes later. Their younger sister, Andrea, was born the next winter.
From an early age the Mitchell children were encouraged to be active. This took the form of camping and hiking trips all around Earth. Ryan’s favourite place for these trips was Ireland. He loved the old stone fences, which still remained in the 24th Century. Even later, when Ryan was a Lieutenant Commander in Starfleet, he enjoyed returning to Ireland on camping trips and has several holoprograms of various locations from around the island.
Ryan also took an interest in music from an early age, taking up the violin then, when he was in High School, the guitar. He loved just playing the violin and he became part of the Annapolis Youth Orchestra when he was 10. As he got older, in addition to his love of classical music, he developed an interest in popular and rock music from the late 20th–early 21st century. It is this interest that led to his taking up guitar lessons.
When he entered the Academy Ryan quickly became best friends with William Taylor, a Flight Control cadet, and his fiancée Elizabeth. When the couple married, Ryan was William’s best man and godfather to their firstborn child, Michael. The pair remained friends during their Starfleet careers and they were assigned to the same Starship, the USS America in 2377. Ryan gained a reputation as something of a ladies man at the Academy but he was never able to make a relationships work because he was so focused on his Academic work. This trend has continued throughout his career.
He is also something of a talented linguist. During his time at the Academy he took several extra classes leaning Klingon, Romulan and Vulcan. Since then he has added Trill, Bajoran, Dominion and Cardassian through long distance learning courses
Ryan Mitchell began his Starfleet Career in the fall of 2367. He was 18 when he began the first year, General Studies. This year covered the basics of life as a Starfleet Officer, and introduced him to the basic concepts which would be built upon in the following years; diplomacy, law, flight, sciences and self-defence. Ryan’s grades during the first year were above average. He was a Starfleet brat and had already spent his entire life surrounded by Starfleet Officers.
It was in his second year that Ryan began focusing on Diplomatic and Legal studies while also taking classes in flight and a couple of extra credit self-defence classes. Over the next three years Ryan learned everything he needed to know to be a Diplomatic/JAG Officer in Starfleet. His grades during those years remained consistent, being above average but not exactly stellar. Ryan also performed very well in the simulations and it was here that he really shone. While he was a good diplomat and attorney on paper, in the simulations he showed himself to be exemplary.
Ryan graduated in the summer of 2371 and was promoted to the rank of Ensign. His first assignment was as a lawyer assigned to the legal services office on Starbase 12. Most of the work during his first 5 months was little more than filling out freedom of information applications and various other types of administrative paperwork. It wasn’t the most exciting work but he knew that it was part of being a Starfleet Officer when he applied to the Academy and he knew the time would come when he’d be given actual cases to handle. It did eventually happen and Ryan proved himself to be a capable trial lawyer.
After 2 years on Starbase 12, Ryan was reassigned to the Excelsior-class USS Malinche as her junior Diplomatic Officer with a promotion to Lieutenant j.g. It was during this time that the Malinche was assigned to pursue and capture the traitor Michael Eddington. During the mission, three Maquis raiders managed to disable the Malinche. The USS Defiant responded to the Malinche’s distress call and provided assistance to the stricken starship.
With the outbreak of war at the end of 2373 there wasn’t a great need for a Diplomatic Officer or a Staff Judge Advocate on starships going into battle so Ryan was reassigned to the Federation Diplomatic Corps as an attaché to Federation Ambassador Daniels. The Ambassador’s mission was to gain whatever support he could from the minor powers of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. Ryan learned a lot during his years with the Ambassador and stayed on with him for a year after the war when the Ambassador was assigned as the Federation Ambassador to Qo’noS.
In March of 2376 Ryan received ordered to report aboard the USS America as her assistant Chief Diplomatic Officer. Ambassador Daniels had also recommended him for promotion to full Lieutenant and Starfleet followed through on the Ambassador’s recommendation. The assignment to the America reunited Ryan with an old friend from the Academy, William Taylor and he spent the next two years on the America, assisting in several first contact situations and diplomatic negotiations.
In late 2378 Ryan was transferred to the USS Archer and promoted to Chief Diplomatic Officer. The next year the Archer was assigned to a Task Force, headed up by the USS Titan under the Command of Captain William T. Riker, heading to Romulus to begin talks in the wake of the coup d’etat by Shinzon backed by the Romulan Military. In 2380 he received a promotion to Lieutenant Commander.
The following year he was reassigned to Starbase 110 as a Staff Judge Advocate. As a senior attorney Ryan received some of the more high profile cases and he enjoyed his work. However after the first year he found himself missing the excitement of being a Diplomatic Officer assigned to a starship, exploring the galaxy and making contact with new races. He requested reassignment early in 2382 but it wasn’t until Mid 2373 that Starfleet issued him new orders to report to the USS Athena as her Chief Diplomatic Officer and Staff Judge Advocate.
