Security Clearance
From Memory-Zeta
Category: Security Terminology
Security clearance is the measure of a persons access to Starfleet data and starship systems.
[edit] Overview
The ships and bases of Starfleet are fitted with very advanced computer systems that can store masses of information and perform many tasks. Access to these computers, and to the data they contain, is strictly regulated, so that only authorized personnel can perform certain tasks, or access certain data files.
[edit] Authorization Codes
Access to all Starfleet computer systems is highly regulated. A standard set of authorization codes have been programmed into the computer cores of all ships in order to stop any undesired access to the systems.
| Code | Standard Level | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Alpha Two (Α-2) | Commanding Officer Executive or First Officer | Unlimited access to all ship’s records, systems, commands and computers. |
| Alpha One (Α-1) | Chief Operations Officer Officer of the Deck | Unlimited access to all ship’s records, systems and computers. No access to ship localized command functions. |
| Beta Two (Β-2) | Chief Intelligence Officer Chief Engineering Officer | Unlimited access to all ship’s records, systems and computers. Limited access to command functions (except if stated otherwise by the Commanding Officer). |
| Beta One (Β-1) | Chief Medical Officer Mission Operations Officer Tactical Officer Flight Control Officer | Unlimited access to all ship’s records, and computers. Limited access to command functions (unless approved by the Commanding Officer). Access to ship systems is limited to duty-related functions. |
| Delta Two (Δ-2) | Limited access to all ship’s records, systems, commands and computers. Access limited to duty-related functions. | |
| Delta One (Δ-1) | Limited access to all ship’s records, and computers. Access limited to job-related functions. |
[edit] Data Access Levels
Starfleet’s data is restricted in five classifications:
• Top Secret (would cause “exceptionally grave damage” if publicly available)
• Secret (would cause “damage” if publicly available)
• Confidential (would be “prejudicial” if publicly available)
• Restricted (would cause “undesirable effects” if publicly available)
• Unclassified (is publicly available)
Access to all Starfleet data is highly regulated. A standard set of access levels have been programmed into the computer cores of all ships in order to stop any undesired access to confidential data.
| Level | Standard Access | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Level 6 | The Fleet Admiral | Unlimited access to all Top Secret, Secret, Confidential, and Restricted documents and records. |
| Level 5 | Flag and General Officers | Limited access to all Top Secret, Secret, Confidential, and Restricted documents and records. Access is limited on a job-related “need to know” basis. |
| Level 4 | Senior and Mid-Grade Officers Senior Noncommissioned Officers and certain specific personnel (duty-related) | Limited access to all Secret, Confidential, and Restricted documents and records. Access is limited on a job-related “need to know” basis. |
| Level 3 | Junior and Company-Grade Officers Noncommissioned Officers and certain specific personnel (duty related) | Limited access to all Confidential, and Restricted documents and records. Access is limited on a job-related “need to know” basis. |
