[edit] BACKGROUND
Pre Starfleet
Soral grew up in a typically Vulcan environment, and from an early age he was encouraged to seek the path of true logic, and purge all vestiges of emotion. Born the only son of Taurek and Selar in the city of Gol, Soral grew to become fascinated by his father’s work as a geologist, and would often assist him whenever possible.
His father’s devotion to the study of geology and the sciences influenced Soral greatly. It was during an expedition in Vulcan’s Forge that he knew that his future would lie in the study of rocks and liquids that make up the planets of solar system.
During that expedition a young Soral found himself separated from the rest of the party as they trekked through the vast desert canyon. Becoming disoriented he stumbled and fell down a ravine. Although not severely injured, he did suffer from concussion. Falling in and out of consciousness he noticed a small pebble in front of his eyes that was striped with a myriad of multi-coloured striations. Whenever he woke up this tiny pebble became his sole focus, and he began to ponder how it came to be.
Later he woke up in a medical facility on the edge of the Forge, his father having searched and found him lying unconscious. Pleased that his son was going to be well, Taurek tried to instruct Soral in the proper way of trekking through the Forge, but the young Vulcan could only concentrate on the small pebble that he held firmly in his hand.
That tiny pebble, which Soral carries with him to this day, became the driving force behind his education and study of geology. He attended a local Vulcan college in Gol in between assisting his father in his work. Soral became a more than competent geologist and upon leaving the college he set about studying as much of Vulcan as he could. Where ever he went he found new and fascinating features, all of them requiring serious research.
Soral continued his work on Vulcan until he turned 50, when a chance encounter with a Starfleet scientist convinced him that his next logical step would be to enter Starfleet. It seemed obvious that once he graduated from the Academy he would be able to study worlds that were uniquely different from Vulcan, enabling him to expand his knowledge further.
After taking and passing the entrants exam in his home town, Soral left Vulcan for the Starfleet Academy on earth where he enrolled as a Science cadet.
Early Career
In his final year at the Academy Soral undertook his cadet cruise aboard the Science Vessel, USS Pegasus. The Oberth-class ship was tasked with undertaking scientific exploration and study, and proved an interesting assignment for Soral, giving him a glimpse of what he could expect during his service with Starfleet.
Upon his graduation Soral was assigned to the Geology Research Institute in San Francisco on Earth. The facility collected, analysed and catalogued data and research from vessels and teams throughout the Federation. Although not the kind of work that Soral wanted to undertake, he still found the information that came in to the institute as most fascinating. He served in San Francisco for six years before, in 2335 he was transferred to the science department on Starbase 152.
Located near the Beta Stromgren system, Starbase 152 was ideally placed to provide scientific research oppurtunities. The Red Giant star gave the system some unusual characteristics, and Soral spent much time studying the planets of Beta Stromgren.
In 2337 he is promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade, and continued his work on the Starbase. He serves there for a further three years before reassigning as a science officer on the USS Pegasus.
The Oberth-class USS Pegasus is a purely science and research vessel, travelling throughout the quadrant analysing features and systems discovered by exploration vessels. The ship was also a test bed for the latest technologies, including research equipment. Soral found his time aboard to be a most enlightening one, discovering results that he had previously thought improbable.
With a restructuring of the science department aboard the USS Pegasus in 2344, Soral was given a promotion to the rank of Lieutenant. This new rank gave him more responsibility, and he was able to undertake more of his own research, including a study of hydrogen planets. He theorised that the core of these types of planets was likely to be in a constant liquid state. This research kept him occupied for several months, but he was beginning to see that perhaps his service within Starfleet was nearing an end.
After spending seven years with the USS Pegasus, and 22 years of service in total, Soral came to the logical conclusion that he had learnt all that he was going to within this organisation. Leaving the Pegasus he returned to Earth, and discussed the matter with his superior officers within the Science Corp. They understood his reasoning, and agreed to him suspending his service indefinitely.
Sabbatical
Returning home to Vulcan, Soral gained a position at the Vulcan Science Academy, teaching and undertaking his own research. The work revived his interest in geology, and he worked tirelessly to understand all that he did not know.
When a new student enrolled in his class in 2351, Soral could not have foreseen the effect she would have on his life. T'Por was ten years his junior, but she had a drive and interest in geology that rivalled his own. She soon became his research assistant, and as they became closer, Soral realised that this was the woman he would join with. Unlike some Vulcan couples, Soral and T'Por had been brought up believing that they were free to choose their own mates. Two years after first meeting they were joined at a ceremony in Gol.
Soral resumed his work into planetary cores, and he continued to theorise about the prospects of liquid cores. The vast pressures at the centre of planetary bodies seemed to contradict his theory, but he was determined to prove it.
In 2373 Soral was asked to give a lecture at Starfleet Academy on the possibility of a planetary body having a core of water. The lecture was most fascinating for Soral and he considered teaching at the Academy full time. Upon returning to Vulcan he took the relevant courses to become an instructor. However, he later found that his studies occupied too much of his time, and was unable to return to the Academy to take up a teaching post.
With the outbreak of war with the Dominion, most people on Vulcan felt that the fighting was a long way away, and life continued as normal. This changed in 2374 when the Dominion captured Betazed. This put Vulcan under threat of invasion, and Soral saw the danger. Moving himself and T'Por to a small settlement away from the major cities, he logically assumed that they would avoid any of the potential fighting.
He also tried to persuade his father and mother to join them, but his father reasoned that they would be safe in the city. Unforunately a Dominion raiding party, keen to put pressure on the Federation launched a minor bombing attack on Vulcan. Taurek was caught up in the bombing and lost his life as a result.
Later Career
After spending 28 years at the Vulcan Science Academy studying the geology of Class B planetary bodies, Soral was approached by Starfleet about returning to active duty. The year was 2375 and the Dominion war had come to an end leaving Starfleet counting its losses. A lot of people had been lost in the war, and they were desperately searching for experienced replacements. Soral, along with other former officers were approached about making a return; coming out of retirement. Giving it much thought, and discussing it with his wife Soral felt that returning to Starfleet seemed logical.
He resumed his commission as a Lieutenant, and was posted aboard the Nova-class USS Darwin. As a science officer his experience was invaluable to the crew of the science vessel and Soral was made Assistant Chief Science Officer in 2376. Undertaking countless surveying and scientific missions the Darwin proved itself as an excellent research platform, and in 2380 Soral received a promotion to Lieutenant Commander and was made the Chief Science Officer.
After serving as Chief Science Officer for four years, Soral was given the opportunity to follow the Command path. A position had opened up on the Luna-class USS Oberon, and with his background as a scientist it was felt that he would make an excellent choice as Executive Officer on the exploration vessel. In 2384 he took the long journey to Starbase 326, joining the USS Oberon before it set off to explore the distant Sigma Librae system.
The mission ended in disaster when a saboteur damaged the ship. Forced to abandon it most of the crew had to survive on the ice planet of Sigma Librae II. Having constructed emergency shelters the crew settle in and await rescue. For his part in the evacuation Soral was promoted to Commander and awarded the Captain's Star. Thankfully a replacement warp core was brought out aboard the USS Cambrian and the Oberon was soon back up and running. However, whilst it was repaired Soral found himself filling in as Acting Executive Officer aboard the Cambrian. During that spell the ship encountered an Hirogen vessel that was hunting a Raptors ship. The Cambrian was able to keep away from the fighting and had to rescue the Marines from a rogue planet in the Sigma Librae system.
When Captain Simms was recalled to Sigma Librae Outpost Soral took command of the USS Oberon. Leading the ship in examining an star system containing an Ultragiant planet, Soral found himself dealing with an emergency situation. When the ship lost power the we caught in the gravity well of the Planetar and had a race against time to save themselves. Thankfull they found the cause of the power failure and Soral was somewhat relived that the ship and its crew survived largely unharmed.
