Located close to the Federation frontier near the Romulan Star Empire, Starbase 326 is Starfleet's most coreward facility. Constructed in the early 24th Century (around the time of the Tomed Incident), the station was intended not only to observe the Romulans, but also to help secure the area of space north of the Star Empire, used to access the Federation territories that would otherwise be at risk of isolation.

The station's focus changed as the century wore on, shifting more towards exploration both before and after the Dominion War. The station has been used by a number of exploration efforts over the years, including the exploration of the Typhon Sector. Among the projects currently overseen by the Starbase is the exploration of the Hurucan Sector, well beyond the Federation frontier.

Starbase 326 is an important link between the Hurucan Sector. Supply runs are sent from the station to the Federation Outpost on Sigma Librae on an almost monthly basis, and the Starbase also functions as a link into the Federation's subspace network. Orders from Starfleet Command regularly pass through Starbase 326's Admiral Penat on their way to the Hurucan Sector. The station has also dedicated a significant portion of its Science department to help process and catalogue the data collected through exploration.

The base is also the Headquarters for the Hurucan Sector Marine Force, and the Regiment provides marine assets for the Station.
