Starbase 51 is a Starfleet Research and Development facility, featured in the backstories and posts of characters by Jason Atkins, and others. The station is a not-very-subtle reference to Area 51, a secret facility in the United States often featured in conspiricy theories and science fiction as a location where advanced alien technologies are studied, and developed for use by mankind.

Former Starbase 51 characters include Katerina Voronkova (current XO of the USS Cambrian) and William Scott Lee (former CONN Officer of the USS Destiny).
