Stardates are a method for which dates can be synchronized while a starship is deployed, because a ship has no natural day-night cycle like a planet, a method for devising times, as well as days, weeks and years was devised.

The Current Stardate systems are inherently flawed in that there were several inconsistencies in the stardate systems used in Trek's various series and movies. However, Sixth Fleet uses a system by which each year is 1000 stardate units, breaking each day down into a set # of units, each Hour and Minute COULD BE broken down but is not for practical reasons.

Essentially, Each Day of the year is worth 2.74 Points, and we multiply that by the Julian date, Julian Date is the day of the year that it is, starting with 1 on January first, and ending with 365 On December 31(366 in leap years) Because of a glitch in this system inherently, 1 January wouldn't be 65002.74, it would be 65000.00, so we have to subtract one from the Julian date. A simple formula is below for those folks who HATE word problems.

• Stardate = (Julian Date(aka day of the year)-1) * 2.74
• On a Leap Year, this # becomes, 2.732 accounting for the extra day in the year.
• Great, so this covers the last 5 digits of a 7 digit stardate, but not the first 2 you ask?

True, The Current Sixth Fleet Stardate systems uses, 2388 as our current fleet year, 2012, also the first two digits of our stardate this year is 65, so our stardates will be in the 65000.00 to 65999.99 range this year. So this equates three things together, the Real Year 2007, the Fleet year of 2383, and the Stardate year of 60000.00, so we can extrapolate back if need be, to figure out dates in the past, simply subtract 1000 from the stardate for every year back you want to go.

Keep In mind, that with our current system, the stardate 00000.00 is on January First 1947, and the fleet year was 2323. If we over think this, then yes, it causes problems, but we play a game, so just have fun.
