Kavin was born into a tricky situation. She was the child of a Romulan and a Human, in the Romulan Empire. Her father was a military intelligence representative, and her mother was a Federation diplomat. She was born on a Romulan military base on the edge of the Neutral Zone. After Kavin's birth, they arranged to be transported away from Romulan space. They were able to succeed and escaped the threatening eye of the Romulan Empire and moved to Earth, in hope for protection, and was raised by her mother's aunt and uncle for a short time. Her parents were able to join her three months after she arrived on Earth. Her mother retired from Starfleet and because of some connections, were able to secure a new identity for her new family. They finally got everything sorted out and by the age of two, Kavin was living safely in a normal home on Earth and settled down in Germany.

However, when she started school, her life became anything but normal. She was not accepted very well at school because of her heritage. In her second year of school, she was suspended for fighting. Her parents became very worried about her pent up rage and enrolled her in TaeKwon-Do, in a do-jang run by a friend of the family. She was very intrigued by the sport and spent most of her time training in it. Her mother also started to show her how to sew, and Kavin quickly became skilled in sewing and designing clothing. She became very skilled in TKD, and by the time she was thirteen, she was a junior black belt, being too young to be a full one. Her parents were very proud of her. All through this time, she managed to keep her grades up and her temper in check. It was a feat she took much pride in. When she turned fourteen, she finally earned her full black belt and began her training to become a full instructor, since she was assistant instructing since she was ten. She also began to learn Baguazhang forms of Pin and Liang styles, which is a form of Kung Fu.

When she was 14, she decided that she did not want to pursue TKD professionally, and instead join Starfleet. She was however, unaware of her parent's connections to Starfleet and the Romulan military until she was 16. During high school, she studied many trades, including tailoring and blacksmithing. She still kept up with her sport, though. She was able to make the German TKD National Team for her final three years of high school. All of which she placed very high. She also had a strange disorder that caused her hair to turn silver. She was upset, considering had platinum blonde hair before. In the end, she decided not to try to dye her hair, as she had gotten very fond of it. Because of her good grades, she was given early acceptance into Starfleet Academy and began early training in 2359.

She entered Starfleet Academy as a Tactical Cadet in the Advanced stream. Everything went very well, and she also began to study Vulcan martial art forms. However, during her 2nd year of the Academy, her parents were traveling through the quadrant and were the victims of a terrorist attack. It left Kavin distraught, but she tried her best to continue her studies. She managed to add to her martial arts skills and earned her 3rd Dan Black belt in her second year of the Academy and exited the Academy standing at 24th out of 180 students, and a glowing recommendation from one of her professors.

She did very well in her first five years, serving as a tactical officer of the USS Ironleige. She was promoted in 2366 to Lieutenant Junior Grade and Assistant Chief Tactical Officer. In 2369, she was approached by Starfleet Intelligence. She was interested in their offer and was accepted for Intelligence training. She graduated a full Lieutenant and Intelligence Officer. She became an Analyst and did good work at Starfleet Command. In 2373, she moved out to the field to work as a Field Agent with a specialization in data interpretation as a Lieutenant Commander. Her shrewdness served her well, she was promoted to Commander and then served as an assistant field commander. In 2379, she unexpectedly left Starfleet after twenty years of service (she was technically enlisted in 2379), citing personal reasons.
