Ambler is the colourful Commanding Officer of the Special Warfare Operational Reconnaissance Detachment 7.

Upon joining Starfleet as an enlisted man; first with the USS Arizona, then with the USS Edison, Ambler Furry was described as a menace and a disgrace to the uniform, an opinion highly thought of by Commander Jaxx (who had started of as his head of department while in Tactical and then Command when both switched to Quartermaster and First Officer respectively) and would have been kicked out of Starfleet if it weren't for Chief James 'Keeper' Dalton, the Chief of the Boat, whom more or less kicked some sense into Furry.

Then he met Lieutenant (jg) Dara Montgomery, Edison's latest counsellor and the woman who tamed the beast within him. Unsurprisingly, though it did raise a few eyebrows, a romance blossomed between the two and reinforced when Furry rescued her from a downed turbolift. However, upon hearing that his cousin was killed by Baron Oruk Ku while on assignment for Starfleet Intelligence, Furry took it upon himself to kill Ku in return. This action was executed in conjunction with Starfleet and Cardassian security forces, plus with the assistance of two of Edison's crewmembers.

With that came immediate reassignment, and away from potential rogue operations, as Starfleet Command gave him a second chance by liaising between the emerging colony of Psi Virginis, the Federation Department of Colonisation and Starfleet Command. While there he got his marching orders to serve as acting executive officer of the USS Hyperion-D, where his command style tended to butt heads with certain members of the crew.

On January 21, 2381 saw the arrival of Amblers two children, win boy and girl. Five months later though, when the USS Edison accidentally ended up transported in time to Earth's World War II era, Commander Furry had unwittingly interacted with Andrej Futrowski - an ancestor, and a leading figure in the Polish Resistance during World War II. It also landed him in a whole heap of trouble, as Temporal Investigations managed to get him demoted once again and reassigned to a less commanding role in 9th Fleet.

Ambler took over operational command of all tactical fighter formations under Starbase 97's umbrella with a demotion to lieutenant commander and under Commander Drakt's careful gaze. Then the Iron Lotus Incident occurred. While classified after the fact, Furry's involvement and Drakt's ability to dodge had given certain members of Starfleet Command and the Federation Council a scapegoat; and both Ambler and his grandfather were it.

After a battery of investigations and courts of inquiry, Furry lost his rank and was demoted to Lieutenant.

Busted and transferred to the Tokyo on request of Starfleet Intelligence, Furry found the adjustment difficult as he quietly questioned the actions of officers he would have otherwise commanded. But he had allies on Earth, even if much of the Council and Senate of the Federation hated anyone named Furry, and after much politiking by certain members of Starfleet Command and even elements from the intelligence community, Furry's rank of Commander got reinstated with orders to transfer to Starfleet Headquarters as the de facto head of Starfleet Intelligence.

His time in Headquarters had been one of personal growth and maturity, even if it nearly got him killed on a classified assignment with Captain Mekar – the then Chief of Starfleet Strategic Operations. However, that changed with the passing of his grandfather. Admiral Furry had been a potent political force within Headquarters and the Federation Council, and had been his grandson's mentor since childhood. Consequently, Admiral Furry's passing hit Furry hard and he temporarily resigned, and went on a journey of self rediscovery that brought him back to where it all started; Starbase Tango.

From there, he was assigned to the role of tactical commander of all military assets in the New Deridous Colony; where he single handedly restored the colonists' faith in the fleet he so loved, and initiated several building projects before and during his short tenure as colonial administrator.

However, as he finally settled, a new challenge arose with reassignment as Captain of the USS Destiny-C.

No sooner had he taken command, he and his crew ended up embroiled in a last ditch defense of the Federation side of the border with Romulan forces. Forced to retreat with the rest of the defending taskforce, that being the USS Arc Angel and the USS Saturn, to Benzar, Furry was reassigned back to Starfleet Intelligence and take up a position within the Sixth Fleet Marine Corps so as to take command of a commando unit.

He was later assigned to head up a unit of the secretive Special Warfare Operational Reconnaissance Detachment, which was eventually uncovered at show trial held back at Starfleet Command after SWORD-7 failed in an attempt to rescue the Vice President of the UFP.
