A long-serving El-Aurian officer in Starfleet, Tristan Viego has recently retired from active duty. His near century in the Alpha Quadrant has seen him pursue careers as an Archaeologist, Astrophicisist, Fighter Pilot, and Marine Officer. He has retired several times, but it never lasts more than a few years before he becomes bored and attempts to pursue another career.

[edit] BACKGROUND

Born on El-Auria, Tristan was one of the few hundred members of his race who managed to escape a Borg attack on their homeworld. Specifically, he was one of those rescued by the USS Enterprise-B, but sadly his family were not beamed aboard during the rescue. Orphaned, he was adopted by one of the spacedock engineers who had been aboard during the shakedown cruise, who raised him as one of their own.

Having no real knowledge of the Alpha Quadrant, he set about learning what he could about the native races. That curiosity grew into intregue, particularly as he learned about the histories of those cultures, and ultimately led him to pursue a career in Archaeology. He earned a degree from Mars University, and a doctorate on Alpha Centauri; for a time he lectured on the subject, and was involved in several expeditions. However, after nearly thirty years he felt the need for a change of direction to keep his career from stagnating. Expanding his interest in Alpha Quadrant races into more general interest about the quadrant itself, he went on to study Astrophysics, eventually earning a second degree and doctorate from the Vulcan Science Institute and the Trill Science Ministary respectively. The combination seemed odd to many, but as Tristan put it: "Astrophysics is simply the Archaeology of the stars. Each layer we scrape from the surface, the further back through time we can see, and the more we learn about our past, our present, and our future."

While on Trill, Tristan met, fell in love with, and married Alicia Vendaan, one of his fellow researchers. Unfortunately the relationship did not last, with Alicia leaving him for an 'older' man: being faced with Tristan's eternally youthful looks threw her own mortality into sharp relief. Rocked with despair at the break-up, Tristan fell into a reckless lifestyle with the new host of one of his Trill collegues, ultimately finding his way into Starfleet as a Fighter Pilot. He served throughout the Cardassian War, and continued in Starfleet until the Battle of Wolf 359. Faced with a reminder of what had killed most of his family, he decided to reconnect with what family he had left; taking a leave of absense he sought out Alicia, and ultimately discovered that he had a son, Ian.

Tristan returned to Starfleet after the destruction of the USS Odyssey, aboard which he'd had friends. After so long out of the cockpit, the only way Starfleet would let him return to duty was as a shuttle pilot, but he agreed; when the Dominion War broke out he found himself seconded to a Marine unit, acting as their dropship pilot. When his runabout was shot down by Jem'Hadar and the Platoon Commander killed, Tristan assumed command and led the unit to the successful completion of its objective; he was given a battlefield commission as a Marine so he could continue to lead the unit. After the war, a favour saw him returned to flight status as a Marine pilot aboard the USS Phoenix. That assignment ended when he was called up to serve with a Special Forces arm of Starfleet Tactical; a few brief assignments aboard the USS Cambrian and the USS Athena followed, before Tristan retired from service to Cestus III.

His retirement was brief: offered a promotion, he was coaxed back to Starfleet Tactical for a few months, before returning to the fleet for a run of service aboard the Cambrian and her successor, before giving retirement another try on Risa. He considered moving to the Farlong Reefs, where the Federation had recently begun to expand and colonise, but became sidetracked along the way, ultimately volunteering as a Civilian Scientist aboard the USS Avalon as a more effective way of satiating his curiosity about what mysteries the region might hold.
