A Nova-class surveyor, the USS Horizon (NCC-73614) was commissioned by Starfleet during the mid-2360s to help replace the aging Oberth-class vessels currently in service. However, with the outbreak of the Dominion War less than a decade later, the Horizon was ultimately reassigned to perform advanced military reconnaissance. By 2385 she was based at Starbase 326 in preparation for the exploration of the Hurucan Sector. However, her intended mission was abandoned, and she was assigned to escort the USS Cambrian (NCC-74986-A) as part of an Exploration and Patrol Group.

She is named after an earlier Starfleet vessel - the Daedalus-class USS Horizon (NCC-176).
