The USS Saturn NCC-2822-B was a Prometheus-class starship hailing out of starbase Far Reach Station in the Beta quadrant. Classified as an explorer / battleship, the Saturn was charged with missions of exploration and diplomacy.
After the destruction of the ship in 2385, a Galaxy-class vessel was re-christened USS Saturn and picked up the mission of her predecessor under the command of the former XO.

In standard configuration, a ship of this class is composed of an arrowhead-shaped primary hull attached directly to a short, small secondary hull supporting four warp nacelles on short pylons in an 'X' configuration. In battle, this ship may divide into three ships — the saucer, the upper engineering hull, and the lower engineering hull — to allow for multiple independently moving weapons platforms, an expansion on the Galaxy class' concept of saucer separation. The saucer has two small warp nacelles that are stored in recesses while joined and extend once the saucer has separated.
This class also has enhanced defenses including ablative armor and regenerative deflector shields.
The class makes much greater use of holographic systems than earlier vessels. The entire ship is fitted with holographic projectors, allowing the ship's Emergency Medical Hologram to move outside sickbay, enabling him to treat injuries sustained during battle as quickly as possible.
The Prometheus class, which was first launched in 2374, is one of the most advanced ships in Starfleet. It is an experimental prototype vessel that has been designed for deep space tactical assignments and employs systems which are at the cutting edge of Federation technology.
It shares the same basic design as other large Starfleet vessels, with two main hull sections and warp nacelles that are supported by outriggers. The ship has a stretched diamond shaped saucer section and like Constellation class ships, is equipped with four warp nacelles.
The Prometheus class is so highly classified that when it was field tested in 2374, only four people had been trained to operate the bridge. Access to all important on board systems, including communications, was restricted to personnel with level four clearance of higher. In an emergency, all systems could be routed to the bridge, making it impossible to access them from any other location.
When it was launched, the Prometheus was the fastest ship in Starfleet. It can sustain a stable cruising velocity of warp 9.9. It has particularly advanced tactical systems, and is equipped with standard phasers and torpedoes, plus regenerative shielding and ablative armor.
Most significantly, the ship is capable of multi vector assault: the ship is actually made up of three distinct modules, each of which is heavily armed. In the multi vector assault mode, these modules separate and attack their target. This makes the Prometheus a formidable weapon that can easily disable a Nebula class ship or Romulan Warbird.
