The Zakdorn are a humanoid race native to their homeworld at the extreme edge of the Federation in the outer sectors of the Beta Quadrant, near the Romulan Star Empire.
Through a developmental process still not understood, the Zakdorn brains developed strategic abilities far greater than the average humanoid. Many Zakdorn work with Starfleet Tactical, using their abilities in planning areas combat maneuvers to full Federation defense.

The Ambassador-class heavy cruiser USS Gandhi (NCC-26632) made first contact with the Zakdorns as part of the Coreward Frontier Survey Initiative while on her maiden voyage in 2324. The Zakdorn had become members of the United Federation of Planets by the 2360s.

The Zakdorn Strategy Institute was founded on their homework in the Earth-year 4713 BCE. Attendance at the intense program is by invitation only and lasts thirty-nine Earth-months (divided into three thirteen-month trimesters). At the conclusion of each trimester, only the top half of each “class” will be invited to remain for the next trimester – thus only 1 in 8 who begin the program of study will complete it. In over seven thousand years, only 84 non-Zakdrons have ever been extended an invitation to attend. (see: Luka Fuar)
Starfleet personnel who complete the prestigious training are authorized to wear the Zakdorn insignia (pictured at right) as an identification badge on their dress uniforms below their commendations. If applicable, they are also authorized the wear of fourragères to denote their “rating”:

In an alternate future timeline, The Zakdorn homeworld will be left in ruins after Romulan bombardment during the Beta Quadrant War that is officially ended after the Battle of Yadalla by the Romulan-Federation Treaty of 2401.
