Zoology (Technobabble)

From Memory-Zeta

There are entirely too many animals cataloged throughout the galaxy. Here is a selected list from a few families.

Contents

[edit] Mammilian

Algorian Mammoth
A large loxodonta (elephant) animal - 30cc's of triptacederine is enough to anesthetize one, according to Dr. Julian Bashir.

Alvanian Cave Sloth
Slow, hairy mammal that sleeps deeply and paces.

Andorian Bull
A large, broody plains creature native to Andoria.

Bugallian Rat
Animal reputed to be terrifying, at least according to Wesley Crusher.

Cardassian Voles
Rodent-like animals, about 23cm long, hairless, and six-legged, which infested formerly uninhabited sections of DS9 and began to be seen in other places when people began to move into their nesting areas. They are apparently attracted to energy fields. They can be trained to fight, though this is illegal. Apparently there is a market for their bellies among the Ferengi. Supposedly the last one on DS9 had been trapped months ago, but Quark's bar was infested with them, leading to the place being shut down while they were destroyed.

Carnivorous Rastipod
Bajoran animal not known for it's grace.

Circassian Cat
Feline, often kept as a pet. Geordi La Forge had one as a child - his first pet.

Degebian Mountain Goat
After being pulled to safety when he slipped and nearly fell over a cliff, Kor angrily said that the ledge Worf had directed him to was fit for a Degebian mountain goat, not a Klingon warrior.

Denebian Slime Devil
A repugnant, nasty creature referred to by the Klingon Korax as a good likeness for James T. Kirk.

Drathan Puppy Lig
A pet animal. The mirror Garak told our universe's Kira that her counterpart thought of her as one.

Gettle
A wild herd animal native to Cardassia.

Ghergher Beast
A large animal, probably native to Yadera Prime (may be legendary). The evil Changeling in the fairy tale Taya told Odo could have turned into one.

Grint-Hound
A fierce creature which Worf pretended to be while playing with Yoshi; he regretted it when the child hurt himself.

Grishnar Cat
A large predatory species of Klingon feline. Gowron, believing DS9 to be mostly defenseless, compared Sisko to a toothless old grishnar cat.

Hara Cat
A Bajoran feline. Kira once killed a mother hara cat in the Bestri woods, mistaking it for a Cardassian.

Kryonian Tiger
Feline lifeform found in the Brentalia zoo.

Ligorian Mastodon
Dax compared the cloaked Defiant in the Badlands to this animal: you might not be able to see it, but it definitely makes leaves rustle.

Lingta
A meat animal on Qo'Nos. Worf told Quark that it is customary in Grilka's native region of Mek'rovak for a man to bring a fresh leg of lingta to the first courtship dinner. Jake Sisko served lingta roast to his father.

Lynar

A small, quiet rodent-like animal imitated by Odo in his quarters after Quark complained about the noise Odo made as a Takaran wildebeest. Quark said he was still bothered by the sound of little feet scurrying around.

Rakonian Swamp Rat
A small, unkempt rodent. Kira compared Quark to one.

Razorcat
A small, brightly-colored feline. Odo bitterly remembered it as one of the things he used to be asked to turn into at parties.

Set'leth
A Romulan animal, kept as a pet.

T'gla
A Klingon animal used as a food source. Yeto compared Dax to one because she was prepared to let herself be "slaughtered".

T'stayan
Talarian riding animal. Neral had one as a child.

Takaran Wildebeest
Large, loud feline animal. When Quark complained about Odo practicing his shape shifting in his quarters (which are above Quark's), he said it sounded like a Takaran wildebeest was tromping around up there.

Targ
A furry porcine animal, kept as a pet by Klingon children and used as a food source. Worf had one as a child. On seeing Odo's quarters after Odo had trashed them, Quark wondered if Odo had been imitating one. A targ is ritually sacrificed before the feast at a traditional Klingon wedding; 3 targs are ritually sacrificed to make tallow for the candles in a traditional Klingon welcoming display. Molly O'Brien has been seen playing with a stuffed toy targ.

Animal that was Guinan's childhood imaginary friend - most likely native to the El Aurian homeworld (now destroyed by the Borg)

Torga
A ridable animal on Gaia.

Tribbles
Small, furry, round animals with no discernible limbs or head; they make a loud, soothing purring sound when stroked, but screech and struggle when in close proximity to Klingons. If fed more than a small amount, they breed at an incredible rate; they are seemingly "born pregnant". Kirk and company encountered tribbles on Deep Space Station K-7 thanks to Cyrano Jones in 2268. creatures. According to Worf, the Klingon Empire, which considered tribbles an ecological menace, obliterated the tribbles' homeworld and had eradicated these "mortal enemies" by the end of the 23rd century. However, the USS Defiant and crew later inadvertently traveled back to 2268 and accidentally returned with the creatures.

Vicarian Razorback
A large, fierce porcine animal. A creature Garak mentioned as something Odo could turn himself into to menace him, if it weren't for the quantum stasis field device that was preventing Odo from shape shifting.

Volg
A migratory herd animal on Varala. Laas once spent some time as one, traveling with a herd until they returned to their summer breeding ground, which had been fenced off. The herd died out in two generations.

Wanoni Tracehound
Predatory lifeform that pursues its victims with enthusiastic vigor. Odo told Sisko that Lwaxana was after him (Odo) like one.

Wompat
A Cardassian animal, often kept as a children's pet.

Yar-Bear
